  • Once again, we get to see the low quality construction of these modern record players. This particular model is a little better than some of their other models; but, that isn't saying much.

    I think this is the very first TH-cam repair video of a modern Crosley phonograph.

    Bryan,
    Those Crosley turdtables are a real piece of junk.
    I just found a portable Airline, dual speaker, high fidelity record changer from 1956 that will run circles around the Crosley every day of the week and twice on Sunday. My new 5 tube Airline even has a built in AM radio. I just ordered capacitors and resisters so I can overhaul the amplifier/radio. Cost of this little beauty was $10.00 at a radio estate sale and once restored, it will last another 60 years. Amazing, Made in USA quality.
    Regards, Tom

    My dad had this and all I had to buy was a power supply. I plugged it in and all that came on was sound and red light.
    By watching your video you show that the arm needs to go to the right to get the turntable to spin. IT WORKS now. Thanks

    CR49. If you turn the 9 around it looks kinda like a P, so basically they named it Crosley CR4P, or crap.

    "Wall Wart" power supply...U crack me up, Bryan! Yeah, gotta LOVE that high quality chinese JUNK! I woulda told him he should throw it in the garbage & bought a vintage 1 off of you!! At the tail end of having my shop, you don't know how many of these I'd get in with the complaint being "platter won't rotate" and all it was was that they didn't know how to move the arm to the right to "reset" the auto-stop mechanism. What a convoluted piece of JUNK those things are! Geez!

    14 years lifetime is impressive for a Crapley. Certainly is more rugged than the Cruiser, and kind of appears to have a little bit more circuitry, though not sure. The board looks a little bigger to me, not that it means anything.

    Nice repair, good to see the player working again. Crosley products are usually considered throw-away these days, it's not worth the labor & parts to fix them for what the units cost.

    I'm surprised that didn't wind up in the landfill in 2003. Maybe all the others did (in 2002) and that's the only one in existance! That ought to sell for a fortune! (ok, maybe not!)

    Hi! Just wondering if you sell some of the radios you repair, privately or on Ebay? I'm looking for a am/fm tabletop smallish/medium radio. I don't want to buy something new that includes other connectivity etc. I'm in the San Antonio TX area, Don't know where you are but I can pay full shipping etc... no problem. Just want a decent vintage radio that might work for awhile.

    is the speed adjustable on these? ? i have one runs slow on 33rpm

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As far as I know, the speed of these can be adjusted by playing with the trimmers at the back of the motor (which I wouldn't recommend) or by adjusting the circuit that runss the motor. If you are lucky you'll find one or two trimmer pots on the circuit board that will adjust that, but I would really expect from Crosley to have done away without them to save a cent.

    • @pcno2832
      @pcno2832 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. It might actually be cheaper to make a digitally controlled 2 or 3 speed synchronous motor (sometimes referred to as a "brushless DC motor) than to pay a Chinese child (OK, maybe an adult with a few weeks of training) to adjust all those screws. As long as the chip and the quartz oscillator lasted, it would be more reliable than these enlarged cassette player motors. I assume that the reason items like this no longer use induction motors is the variation in voltages and line frequencies throughout the world.

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though the motors in these, which I heavily suspect are surplus tape deck motors, need at most passive circuitry (prolly just resistors) to regulate them, which is way cheaper than a chip with a quartz resonator. Perhaps Crosley doesn't even bother to regulate them, and relies on the average characteristics of the motors used.
      And as far as I know, the record speeds have been standarized so they could be easily aproximated with induction motors around the world. There were even motors that could be made to run on all line voltages, they had two field coils you could wire in parallel for 100-120 V and in series for 220-240 V. Of course, these motors have a lot of metal and are expensive. I know the Garrard RC-80 had one of these, for instance.

    8:03 A cheap ceramic cartridge are more robust to that kind of accident. If that happens to a magnetic cartridge the diamond might fly away because the glue is so thin to keep the moving mass small.

    I'm not happy about the one o bought, the idler piece got bad. It was a good sounding player ( crosley collegiate) . It had a tone button and i bought an audio technica cartridge. After 4 years it died. Tried oiling the idler , dped up to chipmunk singing then. Oh well. Of course, they don't make that model no more. Other ones, imo, don't sound good. God bless your endeavors with sound.

  • @someoldguy383
    @someoldguy383 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's funny to read the comments about how crappy this turntable is. As we age, we inevitably lose hearing sensitivity, predominantly at the higher frequencies. That makes it less and less important that these inexpensive turntables have weak bass rendition. They're overbalanced to the treble, which is exactly what our elderly ears need to compensate for what we've lost at that end anyway. We hear less treble, the turntable produces more than it should. As dreadful as this piece of gear probably sounds to young ears, it's not bad to my old ones. Not great, but not bad.

    I was at Goodwill last night, and I saw the same exact model, and it was made in 2001. I didn't want to get it, because Crosley stinks when they made this one, and I looked at the bottom and it says "Made in China". The price sticker says it's about $30 to $40, and I'm not going to buy this Chinese made garbage at Goodwill, sorry!!!!
