Hi! I'm Chantel and I live with my family over on the Canadian prairies. We love to snuggle up with good books all winter long so you'll see lots of books here along with our homeschool stuff.

For your daughter that will be doing the human body, something I found that added some extra practice but didn't involve reading is a human body coloring book. It really helped me remember different systems of the body.
We have used a lot of apologia over the years. I feel my kids really enjoyed all the lower levels. We have done the audio mp3 download from the Apologia site. It helped get him through the drier parts and be able to follow along.
We switched last year to GuestHollow curriculum which was fantastic. It is a literature approach with tons of books (I could get mostly from the library, youtube or Everand.) The great thing is there are so many to choose from that if some don’t fit your kids style you just move on to something else.
Love explode the code as well!
We love the entire Explode the Code series. Great picks! Hope it all goes wonderfully!
I've had 3 children use the General Science- our family does it when kids are in grade 8. It's a good overview and pretty basic. My oldest son just completed advanced biology in grade 11 and it is very, very detailed. It's definitely worth getting the microscope slides and the dissection kit as they are part of the course as well.
I stumbled across Apologia this year as well and fell in love with their Botany unit. We will definitely be doing more in the future.
Glad you enjoyed the unit you did!
Interesting stack!!! We like Handwriting without Tears. I’m in the throes of pulling off everything on my shelves to see what I have and revamping everything. Last year was a little stagnant on my part. I also want to up my younger threes mom involvement. I feel nervously excited.
My daughter used Apologia Advanced Biology and loved it. It's for college prep and gifted teens in my opinion. Being that she is interested in nursing, it's a good introduction to the workload that college will be, if she's ready. If not, you can wait.
That science looks really good! I’m such a nerd, but I love seeing all the curriculum. 😊
Haha, I get that!
My son (who can't sit still) loves explode the code. It's the first book he chooses to get done in the day and it's fun for him and he understands it. I teach handwriting as well, and when I have a messy printer I make them hand write to slow them down and write nicer!
That's great to hear about Explode the Code! I'm curious to see how it goes for my 11-year-old.
Apologia high school levels are intense. Very very good but a lot of reading/work. It's also set to where you are supposed to do them in some order. We haven't used Advanced Biology yet so I'm not sure what the prerequisites are. Hopefully she loves it! ❤
Thanks for the heads up!
Im trying writing strands with my older two as a hopeful attempt of improving their writing skills. For my kindergartener, I won 1 free enrollment for Abeka at a homeschool conference so we are diving into that with her.
Ohhhhh, I’m curious on your thoughts about your daughter possibly attending school next year!
My oldest is also going into 9th grade and she's doing biology with Sabbath Mood Homeschool. She also has interest in medical/anatomy. We are supplementing with portions of Institute for Creation Research's Guide to the Human Body book which is kind of set up like a DK book, but also has science from a biblical worldview.
I'll keep those in mind if we want to try something else out, thanks!
Apologia is an option we are considering for high school. Will be curious what you think of it. I think the middle school gen science is a good option to tie elementary science together and make sure they have a baseline before diving in deep in high school.
I'll definitely share my thoughts as we go!
Happy Wednesday 😊
Oh which province did you move to? We’re in BC 🙋♀️🏔️🌲
We've moved one closer, we're in Alberta!
For your 1st grader look up Prenda Treasure Hunt Reading.
Master books looks like it has a great human anatomy and physiology high school course, actually 3 of them. If the apologia is too intense 👍
I'll look into that one if we need, thanks!
The Master Books series is excellent! It's a really good gentle intro for 7th/8th grade where they don't necessarily want to know the steps of all of the different cycles the cells perform (ATP synthesis, Krebs, etc), but they want to understand how the body works. My son enjoyed it!
We prefer the older Apologia texts written by Jay Wile. He has moved away from apologia, they have rewritten the texts (which we have not used...), and Wiles books are now published through Berean Builders. Maybe you already know this...
Yes! My son is in highschool and we are using the Jay Wile’s Berean Builders Chemistry, physics and biology. It’s amazing!
We are teaching cursive, because they could not read their birthday cards from their grandparents. They always write in cursive. Also, for signing their name. Also, because important history documents are written in cursive.
Apologia General Science made my science loving child dread science. We loved Apologia Young Explorers, but moving to General Science was not a good move for us. Reaca might be ok with it, but the amount of dry reading and regurgitation of facts might be problematic for Ephraim. We ended up doing high school science in an online format with Dr. Shormann (we also did his math) and my daughter loved science and math throughout.
Thanks for that heads up, we'll see how it goes!
