A mom broke down in tears as her 5-year-old son, Kai, who has autism, met his new service dog for the first time. Kai has struggled to make friends due to his inabilities to communicate but when she saw kai cuddling up to golden retriever, Tornado, like it was natural she couldn't hold it together. The photo of Tornado and Kai was posted to the 4 Paws for Ability Facebook page where thousands of people have shared it. #InsideEdition

I struggled with making friends too with my autism
We had a Golden Retriever/Lab mix that we adopted as a two-year-old. He immediately connected with my autistic, 4-year daughter. No matter how inappropriate she was with the dog (hitting him, pulling his ears, etc.), he would adjust accordingly (of course we would intervene and teach our daughter how to act appropriately). That dog would also let all the neighborhood kids into our yard to play with our daughter and never acted aggressively to any of them. If any of them mistreated her, he would just start barking (no growls or showing of the teeth) to get our attention. He was her buddy for 12 years. Great dog!

@@benjamin1265 Yep, we had to say goodbye to him when he was 14 and my daughter was 16. My daughter is now 34 years old and has two cats which she treats better than most people treat their kids!

I'm not a mom, I'm not much around children, but the moment he hopped up and ran over to the dog I teared right up.
I was impressed the dog. It only shied away for a moment and then came right back and made friends with the kid. Most dogs would have been scared or overexcited by a strange kid flinging himself at them like that!
I'm not a mom either but it's still in us to feel love and emotion. I love dogs and kids so this was wonderful to see.

This was so beautiful to watch it made me cry. You see my 21 year old daughter has autism and it was always heart breaking watching her struggle to make friends due to her disability. At one point when she was in 7th grade she became so depressed because she felt like no one would ever be her friend that she attempted suicide. Thank God her older brother heard her up late at night in the bathroom making a bunch of noise. After a while he didn't hear her any more and checked on her. She was laying unconscious on the floor with vomite coming out of her mouth. If my son had not found her in time she wouldn't be her today.
😥 I think my 2yr old grandson has it we aren't sure yet but I've been crying for 2days I'm so scared for him my gut tells me and unfortunately his mother is living a very toxic lifestyle I feel I must take custody of him and my granddaughter who never wanna leave my home so so sad

I’m an autistic adult and I know exactly how the boy feels 💖. I can never explain in words how much love 💕 I have for animals and the comfort they provide. Communication is a huge barrier for us but it doesn’t exist with animals. 🐕🦺🐾👍☮️🌞🌟❤️

Aww my autistic son who is 5 years old also has a golden retriever. He has taught her how to slid, Mary go round ride, swim together, she will ride in the back of his little blue truck when he is driving around the yard. It helps a ton having a dog for them. 👍👍👍👍👍❤️

I had an English bulldog the sweetest girl ever she was my son's therapy dog for 11 years. She had heart failure on 2019. When my so with autism had tantrums she'll be the only able to calm him down. She would go over and seat infront of him. She would give him kisses on his legs, arms complete bath, wich he found so relaxing. We miss her terribly. We don't have the means for another dog like her but he has found companionship on a cat now.

I know firsthand the power a dog can have on someone who has autism. My brother has autism and has always had trouble communicating with people, expressing emotions, and making friends. So, my family thought it would be a great idea to get him a service dog. We did not have the money to buy a professionally trained service dog, so we went out and found a puppy we could train as a service/ therapy dog. The main goal was to be able to take the dog every where my brother would go and kind of force my brother to interact with the dog and other people. That was four years ago and he has become a totally different person. He came running out of his shell and has become a normal high school teenager. Well, what passes as normal in our family.

Keep in mind that not everyone needs or wants friends. Nor is it always something related to being rejected by peers. So if they aren’t sad about it, don’t put your ‘normal’ onto them. If they happen to make a bond with an animal though, join in the happy cry with mum ❤️

I didn't just cry when I saw this video, I started hyperventilating. I spent a few semesters working with Autistic kids, and it was terribly frustrating. Nothing seems to help them. If I'd have brought my dog along, or if I'd have brought one of the kids to the farm where my sister kept her horse, who knows what might have happened? I get that this woman cried warm "mom tears" full of love. It might shock you to know that autistic kids can fall in love with an elevator faster than another human being. I've seen it. Watching her child hug that dog was so overwhelming to the mom because her child might never have hugged her or her husband.

Just two weeks ago I met a wounded Vietnam Vet and he showed me the award his service dog received after it died of old age. We both shared tears it was so touching. My dogs helped saved my life after injury and a long recovery.

Maybe you can talk to your doctor about getting your own pet and have it registered as an emotional support dog. Then, another step might be to look for autism support groups to find other people who you connect with.

Faith in Humanity I HAVE autism, panic attacks and strong suicidal thoughts and I still can't get a service dog.
Then just get a well trained, calm dog with a great temperament. You don't heed it to be an official service dog for it to provide comfort and help you tremendously. Even dogs without titles can make your life better.
