Abandoned Surgical Hospital - Stacked of Equipment and Drugs (Asylum)

  • In today's exploration, we explore an abandoned Psychiatric Center closed in 2005. On the property of a half active campus, it still has power. With over a decade of decay with a mix of power it leads to one of my favorite explorations. The place is stock piled with all the surgical equipment used on the mentally ill, including medicine and polygraph tests. If you enjoy, leave a thumbs up and subscribe for more abandoned documentaries.

You mean the medical supplies that could be infected with tons of diseases on them. The computers that most likely don't work anymore. The furniture that's also probably covered in bacteria. Yeah let's just give all the disease-covered medical supplies, and furniture to all the poor countries, cause they just need MORE diseases.

@@mavisiu1387 Yes, but we don't know what these medical supplies were used for. They could've been used for the Spanish Flu, for all we know. And I'm pretty sure that a lot of those equipment aren't clean. And once you touch something, germs IMMEDIATELY latch onto you. And those tools have probably been sitting there for a long time, so they could be carrying some kind of infection that we've never even experienced yet.

The very first machine was an Old EEG machine (electroencephalograph). It measures brain waves and detects seizures.

I wanted to either correct or agree on the machines purpose I was hooked up to something a little less entailed but it also had a little green screen and wires that had alligator clips that connected to a very uncomfortable rubber net that was placed on my head but for still some of the same uses I have some brain damage so they wanted to measure how much thank god that machine is no longer used because the patient was also put to sleep

Actually, it's not an EEG or ECG machine, it's a scientific polygraph machine. If you pause the video it even says so on top. Not the "polygraph" as used by police, but just a universal scientific instrument that graphs more than one input voltage within a specified frequency band. It's a universal scientific tool that can be used to graph signals coming from electrodes, and thus can be configured to graph signals from the brain, heart and other neural activity from humans or lab animals, or any other sort of source signal that lies within the limits of the machine's inputs. That's why it has some many modules with many buttons and dials. It can be reconfigured into an EEG (electroencephalograph) or an ECG (electrocardiograph) or anything else a university research department or hospital might need. It's much larger and more complex than smaller specialized polygraph machines that are made specifically as EEG, ECG, etc... machines...
They were modular to allow for expansion should the user need to graph a large amount of signals at the same time.
Although these machines were probably used, as you said, for recording brain waves usually just as a diagnostic tool to see if patients had any unusual brain wave activity that could be due to mental illnesses like epilepsy, narcolepsy, sleep disorders, etc..., and less frequently, to monitor brain waves during the administration of electroconvulsive therapy ;)

Certain floors stairwells were locked for a reason. The first one was if it was a psychiatric or detox ward to prevent the patients from either wandering away or escaping depending upon thier mental capacity. The second was to prevent anyone from wandering into sterile areas by accident like an operating room.
That "Toothpick" you guys found in the complimentary bag is actually a combination cutical pusher and nail cleaner. That old tube of toothpaste had the same consistency when it was new, and while alcohol free mouthwash isn't automatically bad, that particular brand tasted like it was colored, and left a Wierd film on your teeth.😝

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this video. I am a nurse (class of '95). I would love to find something like this! At 5:00- that is an autoclave, used to sterilize reusable equipment. (There is a lot less reusable these days, most everything is disposable.) At 8:00, that is probably a sterile bladder irrigation kit. 14:30 - "goody bags" have not changed much over 25-30 years! Also I applaud your willingness to try something obviously expired (the toothpaste), but I am glad you recognized the possible danger. And OMG the hideous hospital green throughout!!!

I thought you were very respectful of the building and the history of it and the people who may have resided therein. I agree it is a terrible thing they have done to leave files of personal information of the patients behind the very least they should have done was shred them or burn them. You would think they'd donate the sine wave equipment and lights etc to a less advantaged hospital or send them to a poor country where they could still be used. Thank you again for being respectful. After working in one of the larger hospitals in NZ for 20yrs in Sterile Supplies, this was an interesting watch. So many things I could say something about too seeing as all departments like this are different including size & what they do etc, the one in your videos a teeny size though, I’d guess they used to buy in a lot of things and didn’t do much real surgical work just from the size alone.
One of the large machines in the room you went into may of been a washer of some kind, but hard to tell, but the one next to it where it had the round graph paper, that’s definitely a sterilizer and a steam powered one, I’ve checked those graphs more times than I’d like to count, but even those sterilizers are old, new/current ones are more computerized but they do still run on steam.
The package you were trying to see inside of just before you went to the table piled high of syringes, I’m betting it was an Asepto Syringe in it, basically a hand pumped syringe, quite often glass, the pump part was actually on the table with the other syringes, the big red ball, it has a hole you push a syringe onto it, then pump away.
Lastly, and I’m probably wrong, but knowing from computers at my work, when they glitched like that, it was more often than not the Refresh Rate needing a reset.
Now I’ve filled your brain up with more useless details, thank you for the great videos and for showing respect to the places and people you showcase.

Devin, I think it's great that you are so careful to respect the privacy of the patient records. It is really unbelievable that the patient records are abandoned like that. Not sure where you recorded this, but each state has laws regarding retention and storage of medical records, and I am guessing that this might be a violation, depending upon the statute of limitations. The records should have been securely stored, or if sufficient time had passed, destroyed.

The building they were in is on a semi-active campus. Maybe the campus administration believes the building is still secure, and thus the records? That is if they've even thought about the place during the last 15 years.

Hey DEF. Cool exploration! Those machines you said we're washers for surgical equipment are called "Autoclave" and, or surgical steamer. I'm not sure if they still use them to sterilize items anymore but I'm not aware if they did? As long as there was power I wish you would have turned on one of those big surgical lights on. Oh' by the way, there were boxes of medical gloves all over the place you could have used to touch stuff?

Another amazing video 💜 Thank you! I just recently found your channel and have been binge watching for the past few days. If those bottles of orange liquid are what I would assume them to be if I saw them in person, I'd think they were for a glucose test for pregnant women. I've had to drink one of those (if that's what it is) before and it is not pleasant. You drink the whole thing within a certain time period, then have your blood drawn and tested to see how much sugar stays in your bloodstream. Anyway, I love your videos and am really glad I found your channel. Stay safe!

    • @PeterOhlmus
      @PeterOhlmus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

There are still approx 1000 employees working on the campus, and remaining patients specific to this building were moved to nearby facilities. Keep in mind this is still a semi-active campus which although wasteful, explains the power being on. And unless they have permission to enter (which I doubt), what this guy and his friends are doing is trespassing. That said, at least they're not 're-appropriating' or destroying anything.

Crazy that theres still power with lights still working!. And am I the only one that is confused as to WHY it is that you can be in a building that hasnt been repainted in 20 years and the paint is fine, yet when the building is abandoned, the paint on the walls peels within a few short years... Even in areas that are sealed and not exposed to weather!! Paint peeling even though theres still power going in the building with machines on!...I wonder why that is........ My ol Grannies farmhouse hadnt been painted since the '60's and its never peeled... even the paint inside her porch! Anyhow. Would LOVE to explore that kind of thing! Thanks for the vid.

Seeing decaying operating theatres, surgical gowns, gloves, etc just is so chilling, makes you wonder what went on there.
