I have never heard of this person before...... After watching this video I am totally enamored with her! She articulates herself extremely well & Just has an approachable, welcoming, relatable, positive Aura!!!! Thank you Sophia for sharing your story with us, I am now a Fan!!! How I never discovered you blows my mind. Never mind, because now I have!! ❤️😁 Love Is colorless & breaks down all preconceived stereotypes ❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
I love Sophia Chang and her book: iconic and instrumental to the culture. I am glad GMA did this interview. Hip Hop in the early days gave us pride. She’s right: mainstream media had almost zero representation of non-whites.
Nice story. Black People are a deep source of love, light, courage and acceptance for everyone!!! I only wish "others" treated black people the same way.
This woman is a legend. Her time in the industry has been covered by MTV and Complex. Took way too long, but it’s nice to see a daytime morning show cover her.
Never heard about her and I used to watch MTV back when MTV was all about music, but I didn't watch all day or all the time, because sometimes I was away.
The African Diaspora especially in america has always welcomed everyone into their culture, just sadly and historically its never been the other way around throughout other cultures of the world even those who heavily imitate and adopt it.
Personal Story. I knew Chang for a number of years via My Grocery Store gig (where I still work) in Union Square/Greenwich Village in New York. She came up to Me while I was stocking shelves concerning a product. Then ended up coming to My register. We hit if off really well. And whenever She came by, Chang would always to ask how I was doing, small talk, etc. Some years ago, after visiting Oregon (where I lived for about 14 years) for a few weeks, I came back to work. A lot of the young Cats were constantly coming up to Me asking Me about Sophia. Some, who were more into latter Hip-Hop/Rap than I was. That's when I found out about Her ties to Wu-Tang Clan and that HULU Documentary. I truly had no idea. I always treated Chang as a GREAT and one of My favorite Customers. Not knowing Her background. My Co-Workers thought I had some sort of connection and "Come-Up". I was being hassled for days about it.😂😂😂 Though I've not seen Chang in some time. She's really Genuine and Good People. I'm happy for Her "newfound" notoriety these last few years.
love everyone my a$$, thats FALSE and you know it. some do and many dont . hell she helped in discovering them and you still typed that dumbass' comment smh
hip hop gave many of us in the 80s, a reason to be proud of skin color and culture when white supremacy was being forced down our throats through every media source, the beauty industry and the music industry with MTV and radio playing mostly white artist.
Oh Please Most Asian Americans cant wait to marry and be involved with whites..Asian women lead in the stats for marrying mostly white males and have the nerve to say Blacks are attacking them.
Duh...you are living in America, which was the vision of white men. I don't know why you people have such a problem with that. Do you go to Japan and complain about Japanese culture? Do you go there and demand them to change for you? This is why I can't stand woke minority liberals, and I say this as an Asian woman who came to America as a newborn infant. If you hated yourself then that is YOU. I never hated myself nor my culture. I never blamed white Americans for anything. In fact, only in America and white Americans do I have this amazing opportunity. Otherwise, I'd be stuck in Laos where my people are treated worse than second class citizens.
I love her! Never heard of her until now! But wow did she speak some truth! I was the same way. Black/white girl brought up in a white world and I wanted to be white. I didn't appreciate my black side til my 30s. I love the fact that she too realized how important her Asian culture was and that being white would not make her happy. Wanting to be white was her downfall bc it disconnected her from her roots. How inspiring!
I love that we love and accept people. I would never want anyone to assimilate I feel her on that we have to unteach ourselves and learn everything Asian, African, Indian whatever it’s beautiful and keep it all it’s for the betterment of All people. The funny part while we try to be someone else to make folks comfortable they are busy being or imitating you. Keep your heritage we love you all. ❤❤
I'm also first generation korean living in America 🇺🇸 & I could totally relate to her story. I respect her & how she lived. God bless her & VOTING TRUMP/VANCE 2024!!!! ❤❤

I purchased her book as a blind item a few years ago and it was good. Great to see that she is being given the recognition that she deserves ❤! I know a lot of people trash her for being like a WuTang flunky, but I rocks with her because she seems to be fun, smart, and creative 😊.

1:31 she is so right about first generation immigrants losing their language. The goal of assimilation is real. As a kid you're trying to fit in and one of the ways to do that is by speaking English. Then when you're older and realize the value of having another language, it's already lost and almost impossible to get back. 2:10 I fell in love with hip hop with that same GrandMaster Flash song. My dad had the record and played it too. I never knew about Sophia Chang. Thanks for sharing her story.
Her story doesn't surprise me because us black people have a strong culture especially when it comes to music. Black people have always embraced other cultures and accepted the people from those cultures.
This is exactly what inclusion is all about. Everything in our society tells you that you are "an other". Why would anyone want to be on the side that gets no representation? That's why instead of abandoning people that look like you, it's important to keep fighting for it. That also goes for people who have privilege showing representation for those who don't and I cherish those people.
