  • "How to Paint a Mural in the Rufus Porter Style" was inspired by Porter's early work 1824-1830. The 20 stencils used in this demonstration are all from that era, recorded from actual walls. The scene, thought to be in Portland Harbor, was influenced greatly by the mural on the east wall of the Prescott Homestead in Jaffrey NH.
Here you can follow a step by step evolution from laying in the background, the large trees and foliage and overhead vines by hand, to the rich development using the prepared stencils which lend an air of authenticity to the whole. I hope you will be inspired to attempt the same with your own ingenuity at play as you develop country scenes meaningful to you. Helpful resource books will be "Rufus Porter Rediscovered", or "Rufus Porter, Yankee Pioneer", both by Jean Lipman , as well as one of Polly's other videos, The Rufus Porter School of Wall Mural Painting"
