Actually he was disliked by most comedians of his generation and loved by those younger than him. Dangerfield didn’t make it until late in life - almost 60. So he had more in common with those young guys making it at the same time. If you watch when Dangerfield gets roasted, it’s all people a generation or more younger than him and nobody from his generation.

He was born in 1921 (!), so, a few years of hitting the comedy circuit, Ed S. at 46, Dangerfield's at 48. He was 59/60 when he did Caddyshack in 1980. Good to know. 🙂 Be well. He started writing jokes in 1936 and doing his act regularly in 1941, when he was 20, so there's that. 🙂 Then he gave it up in '51, worked in sales for ten years, then returned to stand up in the early 60s. So, yes, at 60 he became more well known to the younger folks like me bc of Caddyshack, but he was on the Tonight Show, The Dean Martin show, and the Ed Sullivan Show regularly in his 40s and 50s.

For anyone that has seen the extra content/interviews for Caddyshack, this is old news, but Rodney was scared to death playing his role in that movie, standing alongside Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Ted Knight... He was often afraid that he wasn't doing things right or that he wasn't funny enough. Of course, he belonged there, and everyone knew it, so he was encouraged and reassured that he was doing just fine. It was his first movie role. As the years have gone, it turns out that Rodney's bit parts in Caddyshack are so loved that he's the most popular character now. He stole the spotlight with his zingers.
I saw a making of Caddyshack documentary where they said Bill Murray & Chevy Chase didn't like one another & that Ted Knight didn't like Rodney Dangerfield. That made the movie even more funny to me.

Steve Martin is the guy he was talking about wanting to "get with." He's a legendary comedian who's comedy was completely different from anything people had seen before. He was so popular he did tours at stadiums and sold them out. He's also an amazing writer and has been in some great movies. He's currently on the show 'Only Murders in the Building.' The guy in the other seat was Jonny's sidekick Ed McMahon.
The movie he's plugging there is worth checking out. And if you don't know who Steve Martin is, you should watch The Jerk, too. There was a lot of really great comedy during that era, both stand up and in movies. George Carlin and Richard Pryor were both going strong, and movies like Caddyshack, Airplaine, and an underrated cult classic called "Volunteers" starring a young Tom Hanks are all worth checking out.

I remember when I was a kid seeing Ed McMahon as Johnny's sidekick on "Beat the Clock" in the late fifties. Ed was also a Marine Aviator in WW II, training pilots to fly Corsair F4Us. He was recalled into active service in the Korean War and flew 85 combat missions, earning 6 medals.
He mentioned comedian and actor Steve Martin for his "first choice" then implied Johnny Carson would really be his first choice. He said "no offense" to Ed McMahon because he wasn't either of them.

Johnny Carson was a fantastic late-night host. He would lead the conversation, but allow the guest to drive it forward. If the guest had a new movie or album to promote, he'd always make sure to work it into the interview. And with comic geniuses like Rodney, he'd essentially let them continue their standup routine as a part of the interview, playing straight man to their comedy. This is a great example of that.

Not through his WHOLE career! He was a road comedian into his mid- 30's?? about age 40, but he wasn't that successful, & he had a baby on the way so he did the responsible thing & worked 9-5, I think in insurance (which is also the business that Cedric The Entertainer worked in before HE got into comedy). Then, like almost 20 years later Rodney got back into stand-up but he came back with a prepared, polished act. "I don't get no respect at all" and "I tell ya I'm alright now, but last week I was in rough shape", plus his prodigious amount of bits won him stardom. When he came back he was, like, fifty-plus years old, but he discovered the formula for him, like, what could make him kill, and he killed! Every professional comedian has 1 or 2 "modes" where they just know 'if I slide into this & I've got the material, stuff I know they haven't heard before? & if the room is in the mood for it (that's very important), I can kill in this room.' To me he's sort of the American Dream because he raised kids, did the responsible thing & took care of his family but, he never took his eye off what he was great at, what his talent was, & because when he came back to it he did it right, did it studiously & soberly when he came back -because he was FAR from sober in the first half of his career!- he was very successful. Rappin' Rodney was him doing the special 100% sober. That's... kinda rare in comedy even today, doing stand-up in a club 100% sober. I follow a few young comedians & the business is the same as it ever was; alcohol (+ 1 or 2 other drugs) fuels the entertainment industry.

BRAD AND LEX, he wasn't joking about the drugs. During the filming of Caddyshack. Everybody was doing drugs. Except Ted Knight. So, he's serious about that, but it was a different time in 1980. The stories about the drugs on set during Animal House (1978) and Caddyshack (1980) are legendary. I think it changed in 1982 when John Belushi overdosed.

I never got to see Rodney, but I did have the honor of seeing Carlin twice. The second time was also at Bally's.

The movie he's plugging there is worth checking out. And if you don't know who Steve Martin is, you should watch The Jerk, too. There was a lot of really great comedy during that era, both stand up and in movies. George Carlin and Richard Pryor were both going strong, and movies like Caddyshack, Airplaine, and an underrated cult classic called "Volunteers" starring a young Tom Hanks are all worth checking out.
I liked, Volunteers, but my favorite Tom Hanks movie ever is from about the same time. That movie is, Joe vs the Volcano.
@@picklefish74 Another good choice. There isn't a moment in it that compares to the cultural exchange Tom Tuttle brings to the People's Army in Volunteers, at least not to someone who spent a few years in Pullman WA. One of my favorite moments in cinematic history, if I'm honest.

Tons of great comedy in movies.. Bill Murray in Caddyshack and Stripes.. Tom Hanks in Bachelor Party, and Splash, also with John Candy and Eugene Levy.. The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, Stir Crazy, and the list goes on..
the guy sitting next to him, is johnny carson's (the host) sidekick. His name is Ed McMann who also does the publishers clearing house sweepstakes. Also EF Hutton was a stock broker and back then there were commercials that said "When EF Hutton talks people listen"
I remember when I was a kid seeing Ed McMahon as Johnny's sidekick on "Beat the Clock" in the late fifties. Ed was also a Marine Aviator in WW II, training pilots to fly Corsair F4Us. He was recalled into active service in the Korean War and flew 85 combat missions, earning 6 medals.

He mentioned comedian and actor Steve Martin for his "first choice" then implied Johnny Carson would really be his first choice. He said "no offense" to Ed McMahon because he wasn't either of them.

When you get a chance, watch some of his movies. "Caddyshack" and "Back to School" are excellent.

Rodney Dangerfield has everything completely memorized. There were no comedians that put the background work into it that Rodney did. He kept each joke on a notecard and had a huge file of these cards that he would put together into a show. Every breath was scripted. If you want to see a totally stream-of-consciousness comedian, watch Robin Williams' stand up.

Johnny Carson was the king of late night. Appearing on The Tonight Show launched the careers of many comedians. Rodney was already an OG.
Ed Sullivan show made him national not just Johnny.

E.F. Hutton was a commercial from the 70s by "financial advisers" when they started giving advice in the commercial, where ever they were at EVERBODY STOPPED and listened.
When EF Hutton talks people listen. I think that's how it went, it was like a commercial for an investment company or something.
Johnny Carson was a fantastic late-night host. He would lead the conversation, but allow the guest to drive it forward. If the guest had a new movie or album to promote, he'd always make sure to work it into the interview. And with comic geniuses like Rodney, he'd essentially let them continue their standup routine as a part of the interview, playing straight man to their comedy. This is a great example of that.
E. F. Hutton was an investment group. Their slogan was "When E F Hutton talks, everybody listens". The 555-1212 used to be the number you called when you needed information about a phone number--- but he called it for info about sex, because he didn't know what to do.
Rodney would go on Carson about every 4 months with 6-8 min that killed. I know you guys don't get the references when he was talking to Johnny and Ed but I got them all. He was brilliant.

He was a road comedian into his mid- 30's?? about age 40, but he wasn't that successful, & he had a baby on the way so he did the responsible thing & worked 9-5, I think in insurance (which is also the business that Cedric The Entertainer worked in before HE got into comedy). Then, like almost 20 years later Rodney got back into stand-up but he came back with a prepared, polished act.
"I don't get no respect at all" and "I tell ya I'm alright now, but last week I was in rough shape", plus his prodigious amount of bits won him stardom. When he came back he was, like, fifty-plus years old, but he discovered the formula for him, like, what could make him kill, and he killed! Every professional comedian has 1 or 2 "modes" where they just know 'if I slide into this & I've got the material, stuff I know they haven't heard before? & if the room is in the mood for it (that's very important), I can kill in this room.'
To me he's sort of the American Dream because he raised kids, did the responsible thing & took care of his family but, he never took his eye off what he was great at, what his talent was, & because when he came back to it he did it right, did it studiously & soberly when he came back -because he was FAR from sober in the first half of his career!- he was very successful. Rappin' Rodney was him doing the special 100% sober. That's... kinda rare in comedy even today, doing stand-up in a club 100% sober. I follow a few young comedians & the business is the same as it ever was; alcohol (+ 1 or 2 other drugs) fuels the entertainment industry.

When Johnny Carson invited comedians to sit down he would feed them questions that they could answer with more of their material. “I get no respect” was Dangerfield’s catch phrase. The album was called No Respect. I went to Dangerfield’s in NYC a few times in the early 90s but he wasn’t there the days I went.

BRAD AND LEX, he wasn't joking about the drugs. During the filming of Caddyshack. Everybody was doing drugs. Except Ted Knight. So, he's serious about that, but it was a different time in 1980. The stories about the drugs on set during Animal House (1978) and Caddyshack (1980) are legendary. I think it changed in 1982 when John Belushi overdosed.

I grew up in in one of the best times for comedians. Rodney Dangerfield, Richard Pryer. Gallager Eddie Murphy. These days those guys would be cancelled.
That, E. F. Hutton joke, was a 70's commercial about a business or bank, stock broker, it was always in crowded room or place, when someone mentioned his name, it got really quiet, an they turn to the person speaking, leaning in that direction!! TH-cam it🧐👍🏾

The funniest thing I ever heard about Rodney was at the beginning of his comedy career things weren't going well so he quit for a couple of years and became an aluminum siding salesman. Can you imagine this guy coming over to your house to sell you something. LOL

The joke he made near the end "It's so quiet, I feel like E.F. Hutton just spoke." was a reference to a popular series of commercials back in the 70's and 80's.
E.F. Hutton was an stock investment company and in their commercials there would be a busy loud location and two people would be talking about stocks. One guy would say "My broker is E.F. Hutton and he says..." Then the entire place would get quiet and people would lean in to listen to what was being said.
The end of the commercial was a voice over saying "When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen." As if to say E.F. Hutton has fantastic stock information.
EF Hutton was an investment banking firm. Back in the day they had commercials and the big line was, "When EF Hutton talks, people listen." And in the commercial when someone mentioned the name EF Hutton, everybody got quiet to hear what was said about him. This Dangerfield appearance was very of the time.
