      PEMDAS is not wrong, it is just often poorly explained. Where either 'P' for parenthesis or 'B' for brackets are first; from left to right or working the inner most P/B first, then Exponents; left to right, then M/D; where 'M' comes first if it is required or 'D' if there is no 'M' function, then the same for 'A/S'; where Adding comes first before subtraction, unless there is no addition component. At least, that's how I learned it.

    7:55 the multiplication by juxtaposition rule would take priority over PEMDAS. The 2(3) should be resolved first, and then you would have 6/6, which would be 1.

    • @Vibe77Guy
      @Vibe77Guy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      6 halves of the quantity (1+2) is indeed 9. In keeping with all other formulas with fractional coefficients.
      However, 6÷2(2+1) fails dimensional analysis unless the parenthetical expression 2(2+1) is fully resolved prior to the division.
      6kwh÷2h(1kw+2kw)=
      6kwh÷6kwh=1 cycle.
      The results of doing it otherwise are in units of square kilowatts, and spurious units indicate spurious results.
      Implicit notation includes the implicit grouping relationship of all of the factors and coefficients involved in the implicitly joined expressions.
      This is true of ALL engineering and scientific formulas. Especially those with fractional coefficients.
      Also Distance divided by circumference is revolutions.
      So D÷2πr=D÷(2πr)=
      D÷(πd)=revolutions
      But D/2πr would be interpreted as (D/2)πr, or (D/π)d neither of which will return revolutions, but instead differing results in units of area. Neither of which is correct.

      @Vibe77Guy is quite correct, but not that PEMDAS is incorrect. PEMDAS is intended for simple math (what I call checkbook math, where all the units are the same). Mathematics is intended to convey a concept properly.
      Vibe77Guy's answer is based on the principle of consistency of units (addition or subtraction of variables must be with identical units) where his answer of 1 is indeed correct for the units he applied. I can make a case for the answer being x/(2(y+z)) or using the long bar method for specifically calling out the explicit numerator and the explicit denominator!
      The point is the resultant numerical answer must be designed by the author to be correct regardless of who calculates the answer and as well as the units! The presentation of the original problem is ambiguous unless the rigorous application of PEMDAS is intended which then results in the answer of 9.
      Both answers, 1 and 9, are correct depending on how the expression is interpreted. This highlights the need for clear communication in mathematical notation, especially in fields like engineering, where units and precise calculations are critical. For rigorous mathematical expressions, it’s essential to use parentheses to eliminate ambiguity and ensure consistency across interpretations. 7:47

      There is a Neutral Element property of multiplication issue with your notation.
      x÷2(x+y)≡x÷[2(x+y)]≡x÷1[2(x+y)]
      Whereas
      x/2(x+y)≠x/[2(x+y)]≠×/1[2(x+y)]
      Likewise
      4/3πr³≠4÷3πr³
      4/3πr³≡(4/3)(πr³)
      4÷3πr³≡4÷(3πr³)
      And
      D÷2πr≠D/2πr
      D÷2πr≡D÷(2πr)
      D/2πr≡(D/2)(πr)
      Only 1 is correct. 9 can never be.

    I get rid of the division by turning it into multiplication by a fraction, so I don't have to go left to right; I get the right answer no matter what order I multiply the numbers in. Likewise, I get rid of the subtraction by adding a negative number, so I can add the numbers in any order.

    I just found your math videos today and I have subscribed because your style helps me and makes sense to me. I started college last summer and this math class is kicking my ass mainly since I was homeschooled as a kid. The emphasis by my mother was on words and not on numbers or math so I have been at this odd disadvantage. Thank you for making these videos. I will be watching more of them to help me to pass this bleeping math course. :D
    Oh and thank you for the Red Boxes! I started boxing my answers when I would test or correct answers so that I could rework problems and I found it really heart warming that you use boxes too! *BIG HUGS*
    But most of all thank you for the introduction because I do feel as if other people will think me stupid if I can't do the math or have problems, and that idea does keep me from getting help or asking for help.
    I just don't think with numbers I think in words lots of words and the better things are explained verbally or in writing the better I retain and deal with it. I am sure to other people it sounds odd. But all that fear I have of being dis'd for not being smart in math does is keep me from getting help and learning anything. So thank you so much for being respectful of that.

    This video is money! I always thought that the whole "PEMDAS" thing was clunky because, visually, it implies that you focus on the order of the acronym versus actually focusing on the order in which actually take place in a given expression. I always like to think of the order of operations in terms of levels; I can't get to the addition/subtraction level until I've completed the parenthesis level, exponent level, and multiplication/division level. And within each level, the operations always occur, as you have pointed out, from left to right. Anyways, I thought the video was solid and very helpful.

    That's correct! The opposite of three squared is -3² because the exponent only applies to the element directly to the left of it. To square -3, you must include the negative sign within the parentheses for the negative sign to be included in the process of squaring. Therefore, negative three squared is written as (-3)² as we are squaring both the negative sign and the number 3, not finding the opposite value of 3². Hope this helps and thanks for the comments!

    Almost thought you were going to do 6 ÷ 2(1+2) correctly, but you got it wrong. You didn't apply distributive property on this one. You correctly did it in another problem but not on this one. If you do apply distributive property, then you will get 6/6 which is 1.
    Think about it. That 2 was factored out of the brackets. So 2 belongs within the brackets. Properly applying distributive property would result in
    6÷(2*1+2*2) or 6÷(2*3).
    Beauty of math is, if you correctly apply rules, you will get the same result regardless of which part you solve first.

    Dear Fort Bend tutoring, just for discussion: The parentheses represent a group with numbers as it is here but it also can contain variables with mixed operations. In the subject expression, the group has two numbers to be added but acted upon by an outside operation as it is here by the FACTOR of 2. Some see the parens as not being fully resolved until that operation is complete. Some think that the result is a value in and of itself and the group would not be satisfied (arrived at the true value) by removing the factor. This is true when DISTRIBUTING the factor across the group. e.g. One would arrive at a totally different answer if one were to distribute the values as in 6:- 4+2 (six divided by four plus two) then using PEMDAS would give us an answer of 3.5 I hope you are not suggesting that distribution cannot take place before the division operation. So simply using that primary school mnemonic is a generalization that fails in this case. It may be ok for simple math but not for more complex expressions.

      Fort Bend Tutoring maybe you can clear something up for me. I understand the order of operations but what I don't get is why, in the expression you showed, 6/2(1+2), the distributive property doesn't apply. If I where to plug in a variable for the first 2, as in 6/y(1+2) would that not equal 6/(y+2y) ? This whole thing has got me confused

    I learnt arithmetic ,algebra,calculus ,differential equations,even some quantum mechanics . Arithmetic was the only branch that used the obelus divison symbol. The use of the horizonal bar forced the writer to clearly state the next series of operations and if not clearly to use parentheses . Mathematical expressions should be written in such a way that one understands or arrives at the same result or conclusion whether one reads it forwards or backwards .

    I was always taught this way and I have never been confused about it because it is really easy, but alot of people tend forget to do steps 3 & 4 from LEFT TO RIGHT.
    PEMDAS in 4 Simple Steps
    Step 1) Do the parentheses (brackets).
    Step 2) Do any exponents.
    Step 3) Do any Multiplication OR Division LEFT to RIGHT
    Step 4) Do any Addition OR Subtraction LEFT to RIGHT

  • @ibdmantoo
    @ibdmantoo ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Left to right is not important since the commutative rule tells us the order is not important. it's a convention but not a rule. You have two rules, left to right rule and the juxtaposition rule where the distributive rule is an outcome of juxtaposition. So it comes down to which rule do you follow. The whole thing is moot since no math teacher would set up a problem like this. Operations are to clarify--not confuse.

    If you're writing by hand, I'd always recommend using a fraction bar instead of the division symbol. It works as a grouping notation, so it eliminates a lot of ambiguity.

  • @WorBlux
    @WorBlux 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For 6 / 2(2+1)I would come up with the answer on 1. I'd only get 9 if you used a long bar and put (2+1) above it or used the % and X symbol instead of the fractional/rational operator and the implicit multiplication. A lot of times 2(2x+1) is used to simplify the expression (4x+2) . It would be weird but allowable notation to start the problem 6/(4x+2) is equal to 6/2(2x+1) is equal to 3(2x+1) is equal to 6x+3. If you plug in the values say 2 and 5 for x you get 6/10= 15 and 6/22 = 33 respectively which is obviously false.
    Therefore it is reasonable to assume a multiplication in the form of x(some-expression) is implicity grouped as if a set of parenthesis is around the whole problem like (x(some-expression)), but it's left off just because it's a lot more readable. Anyone familiar with higher-level maths is going to read in an extra set of parenthesis out of habit,

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct in that the parentheses have a big role 2 play. However, 6/2(2+1) even without a "long bar" would still be 9. The substitution you used is also incorrect. Using your example, the equivalent expression is 3/(2x+1). Due to the fact that your original problem included (4x+2) in the denominator, factoring out 2 and simplifying the expression does not allow you to remove the remaining factor from the denominator.
      Thanks 4 sharing!

    • @rustygear447
      @rustygear447 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FortBendTutoring You're wrong, and PEMDAS is still wrong. There's a thing called multiplication by juxtaposition which takes precedence over multiplication and division.
      The correct answer for 6/2(2+1) is 1
      The only way to get 9 is by writing 6/2*(2+1)

    Under "PARENTHESES", you could have also put down HORIZONTAL FRACTION BAR. This is because a horizontal fraction bar, in addition to meaning division, acts as a grouping symbol of a kind, separating everything on TOP from everything on the BOTTOM, and then telling you to do the division of the top by the bottom LAST.

    • @corower
      @corower ปีที่แล้ว

      .. really nice comment. and that's exactly why examples at 8:00 are wrong. -- multiplication by juxtaposition (by leaving out the multiplication sign) _also_ should be treated as grouping.

    • @trwent
      @trwent ปีที่แล้ว

      @raitisnugumanovs1693 My comment concerned HORIZONTAL fraction bars, NOT division signs or slashes. Therefore, whether the examples you point to are correct or incorrect has nothing to do with my comment.
      Now, as to whether multiplication by juxtaposition has higher priority that explicitly written down multiplication and division signs, that is nebulous. It is something upon which there is no universal agreement. If it were as you say, then it should clearly appear in basic arithmetic and algebra textbooks where Order Of Operations is listed, but it usually does not.
      The best policy is just to use grouping symbols when you think there may be ambiguity.

    Great video. I was just talking with someone about this today. I never thought the Dear Aunt Sally song was helpful, so I ignored it ompletely, but I always found PEMDAS to be a helpful mnemonic. I did have the issue at first of thinking of it as P-E-M-D-A-S instead of P-E-M/D-A/S, but even after having to break myself of that bad habit I still found the acronym useful. I think that teaching a mnemonic is OK as long as it is heavily stressed simultaneously that M/D and A/S have the same priority. Students who don't need the mnemonic will ignore it (like I did Aunt Sally) and students who do need it will be happy they have it. I had a teacher once who wrote it vertically on the whiteboard, and placed MD and AS on the same line respectively. I thought it was a pretty intuitive way of representing the correct order while still presenting the mnemonic.

    Sure, our response is it depends on the author of the question. Both ways are mathematically correct, so it doesn't matter whether you simplify using the order or you're "forced" to simplify in a specific order based on parentheses, brackets or braces. Thanks for your input.

  • @FortBendTutoring
    @FortBendTutoring  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agreed. However, the focus of this video was suggesting a strategy to the masses regardless of age or learning styles. When teaching to specific subsets, a teacher has the opportunity to tweak his/her lesson to accommodate their students. Our issue is that a strategy that may help a few has become the main strategy attempted in many classrooms across our nation and others. We've had the benefit of witnessing the long-term disadvantages of straying from the order to push the tool. Great response!

My knowledge of the subject is displayed in my video, "Solving Quadratic Equations: The Square Root Property" as I point out the negative root you refer to. -3² is -9.
