Well done! I watched all of Brazil's matches during the '82 world cup (my first) and they were just magnificent. I had become aware of football when I watched the "5min final" (F.A cup '79), a few years earlier, and managed to also watch the World club finals, where Flamengo went through Liverpool like a hot knife through butter. So, I was eager to watch how they did in '82, and although disappointed that they went out to Italy, they made a profound impression, even here in little ol' New Zealand.
Just some context for you. That '82 side was a return to the beautiful football that characterised those old Brazilian teams. They'd experimented in '78 with what they called a European style - more structured and organised, less flamboyant, and under Tele Santana they were again encouraged to express themselves and so they did. The New Zealand coach, Adshead, after the group match said Brazil "played football from another planet". Graeme Souness playing for Scotland, said it was like "chasing shadows the whole game". You are right that they looked almost effortless in their play, making the complex look incredibly simple, with that beautiful tempo, and what seemed like all the time in the world. They played the most beautiful football I've ever seen.
I'd say Zico was easily top 10, and in the late 70's early 80's was the best player in the world. Vison, smarts, skills, desire. I'd also say his '82 and '86 vintage Brazil teams were unlucky with injuries (the '82 side losing their first choice striker before the finals - mind you they gained some of that back with Falcao breaking through to the first team - and Zico himself, injured prior to the '86 finals). With the passage of time Zico is definitely underrated.

  • @GusBrunson

You should add some more strange facts to the 1978 World Cup.
    1) The goalkeeper for Peru who took six goals, Ramon Quiroga, was an Argentine naturalized Peruvian. You have to remember that no team received 6 goals in that tournament neither Peru ever lost by such difference in the history of World Cups.
    2) In the first game of Brazil against Sweden , the ref nulled a goal in midair by Zico, by ending the game when the ball was entering the goal. I have never seen anything like it.
    3) Even thinking Brazil was Argentina's northern neighbor, Brazil had to play all of the group stage games, on the southernmost Argentine host city.
Meaning that Brazilian fans had to travel a very long distance to attend the games.
    4) In group stage A, Argentina played against Hungary and even thinking the argentines were playing much more violently than the Hungarians, the ref ended up giving two red cards to the Hungarians. Argentina won by 2x1.
5)In the same group stage A, Argentina played France, and for some strange reason a clear penalty for France was not given. Argentina won by 2x1. BTW, had Argentina tied with Hungary or France, it probably would not advance on group stage, since they also lost to Italy on the same group.
    5) On the final against Holland, a bizarre sub-plot then emerged when the Dutch team bus was taken on the scenic route through Buenos Aires’ backstreets prior to the game before being made to wait again on the pitch in front of a hostile crowd after the Argentina players arrived late.
    6) Right before the final game, the Argentines began a passionate protest against René van de Kerkhof’s forearm plaster cast - something the Dutch defender had been wearing all tournament without any objections. The Italian referee Sergio Gonella gave in and forced van de Kerkhof to apply an extra bandage.
With a history of underperforming in major competitions, from their very first final in 1930 to their feeble elimination in West Germany in 1974, the Argentine Military Junta saw this as an opportunity to explore the Argentine passion for the game, to allow them to remain in power for many more years, and even stage a disgraceful war against England. The 1978 World Cup, for sure, was one of the most manipulated World Cups in history.
And was organized by a military government that arrested, tortured, raped and killed its enemies. A government that closed down congress, imposed censorship, persecuted catholic nuns, jewish leaders, journalists, artists and anybody who disagreed with them, they even kidnapped and assassinated opposition leaders in foreign countries. So nothing coming from those dictators would surprise me, including bribing their adversaries to win the World Cup.

Sore loser Argentina still had to score than Holland to win, this World Cup against France the referee tried to help the French and Argentina went to pk’s otherwise they would have won in regular time. Something Brazil failed to do in penalty kicks. Argentina scored their own goals to win not their politicians

Zico never rested on his laurels. He practiced exhaustively, even after his playmates punched out. Until darkness fell. On practice days.
His play on the field reflected upon his obsession towards perfection. A volley shot by Zico , ball midair , would lunch straight at the goal frame. Seldom ever he missed target, regardless of play tempo.

The father of Zico was a fanatical Flamengo supporter. Zico became the most important player ever of Flamengo. Flamengo is the most popular team in Brazil. Zico is the idol of millions of Brazilians. He is so popular as Romario, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho Gaucho. Moreover, Zico was the first outstanding player to be screened on Brazilian tv with a good quality of image. If you go to Amazon there is an indian playing naked in the forest wearing the jersey 10 of Flamengo that reminds Zico. Do you really believe that he fails?

Not quite in terms of Liverpool being at their peak in Devcember 1981, where Flamengo dominated domestic football in Brazil and South America in 1981. Liverpool although winning the European Cup and League Cup the previous season certainly didn't dominate the 1980-81 League season as they finished Fifth in the table, and were stuggling in the League when they played Flamengo, although were were in the 5th Round of the League Cup and Quarter Finals of the European Cup at the time. The match played on Sunday 13th December 1981.
The Liverpool team that won the European Cup in 1981 was breaking up, and newer players signed in previous years and before the start of 1981-82 season. It was to be first season in the team for Bruce Grobbelear, Mark Lawrenson and Craig Johnston with Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan beginning to establish their place in the team. Looking at that the team selected it was the last time Ray Kennedy played for Liverpool, and although Ian Rush had just established himself he didn't play in the game.
It would have been interesting if a settled Liverpool side played a few months later when the newer and established players had begun a run which led them to win the League Championship and League Cup with Graeme Souness now as captain, maybe the result might have been the same, or it would have a tighter match, as the previous seasons World Club Championship match between Nottingham Forest and Nacional was played midweek in February 1981.

In that time , the big clubs in Europe it wasn't so big like today. Zico played for Udinese because he signed a great contract. South America players rushed to Europe just because the money. Today it is totally different. Moreover, in that time here in Brazil the club was totally owner of the player till 30 years old. This fact changes with Pele's law that is implemented in the end of the 90's. The president of Flamengo sold Zico before the club did not have the right to make more money with him.

Thanks, new subscriber from the US - people around here are excited for the Copa Final Sunday, Colombia v Argentina. after the clash , may I suggest a couple of topics that fans may find insightful - the fail of that very talented early 90s Colombia squad that culminated in the debacle of WC 94 for them ; they had amazing players for a few years there and of course the senseless tragedy of Escobar's killing. Also, the rivalry between Argentina - Colombia. My humble input only.
