There are several factors-the procedure, your surgeon, your anesthesia team, your medical history and current physical condition are just a few. Not all eye procedures are done with general anesthesia.

I'm interested in the field and I'm a pre-med student and I would like to know if the field has the same foundational methods with every procedure or will every procedure vary by a lot. I enjoy doing the same thing over and over, and I just want to know if this is for me. I appreciate the help!

Knowing everything that I know, assuming you already have a college degree and have the pre-recs, I'd still become a physician. No slight to my nursing colleagues, but that route involves just as much debt as medical school, and yields less autonomy. Both have their pros and cons.

After residency (4 years), not that long depending on how much you save towards your loans. Probably 3-4 years if you’re up at 2 mil, which is high for student loans. a few 100,000 would be like 1-2 years
My son is a 2nd year resident anesthesiologist at a well known hosp with 2 years left to go (and possibly another fellowship year). His student loans total around $250k. He makes around 55k now and receives aprox a 5k raise each year of residency. I have already seen offers from a hosp in Cali of up to 425k. If he buckles down and doesn't go bat shit crazy when he finally starts getting paid, I think he can do it in a few years. But I have already heard of offers from hospitals to pay off student loans, cars, signing bonus's, etc. so it pays to see whats out there before making a final decision. Some of the anesthesiologists at his hosp are bringing in 700 - 800k a year, especially if they are going between 3-4 rooms at once and supervising CRNA's and residents
CRNA'S were practicing ANESTHESIA before PHYSICIANS so please look up for history before making assumptions. It's MORE like a medical enroachment! Anesthesia is NOT the practice of medicine and please review the legal guidelines on that matter. It is amazing every time Physicians go to court to fight Nurses, it usually ENDS in defeat.
C Morris Yes, it's real. We even had it as a ballot issue in my state about a year ago believe it or not. Politicians getting involved in these decisions are never a good thing, especially when you consider their reasons, which is always putting money in their own pockets via some insurance company, etc. It will soon be the same with PA's trying to replace MD's for office visits. This is why it pays to have a sub specialty (an extra year doing a fellowship). It will make you much more safer in your job.
