Wonderful episode, and even more wonderful is DeForest Kelley's performance as the defense attorney. I can't recall any appearance of his on Star Trek more artistic than this one. Thank you.

Yes. He was a totally different actor here. So much more relaxed and confident. Nothing close to this in Trek.

McCoy was NOT happy about being in space!

Good episode. I watched it only because Dr. McCoy is in it :)
There's an episode in Dragnet similar to this one in which a bad guy took a shot at Joe Friday and missed. The whole show was about Friday's innocence because Friday shot the bad guy in return. The "lost" bullet was found in the wall behind Friday under a bookshelf. A dark pencil line was found under the self in which you had to lift it up to see the hole and the butt end of the bullet.

Dammit, Jim, I’m a doctor, not a defense attorney!

Not a bad putt from Deforest Kelley. A stand-out actor. As well just a Country Doctor.

Thanks for sharing this! If we can offer a minor correction? The date listed is incorrect. Daily Variety indicates the pilot was in production in winter 1960, and aired on June 13, 1960. 1959 was before it was even filmed.
Screen Gems rights to the source material (Jake Ehrlich's 1950 book "Never Plead Guilty") lapsed or were released, and MGM-TV picked it up, producing a new hour-long pilot which was picked up for the 1962-63 season as Edmond O'Brien starrer “Sam Benedict”.

Shatner's ST Memories claims that the show was cancelled because Dee Kelley's character refuses to shake hands with his client. But you can see right here that he DOES shake hands at the end. I think the show was cancelled because it was just the wrong year and the wrong format for the networks at the time. Also, Perry Mason was already a hit show featuring a defense attorney, and this show despite its promise is just not different enough.

It WAS produced as a series: "SAM BENEDICT" (1962-'63), starring Edmond O'Brien- and based on Ehrlich's legal career. That was produced by William Froug for MGM-TV.

I have enjoyed everything that I have watched with DeForest Kelley in the show - even this half hour Perry Mason Lite. Some people have accused William Shatner of overacting, but he never reached the height that Kelly did in the final courtroom scene. I agree with Falcon664 that he wasn't right for this part.
