This song was written as a call for people to be more open about their mental health. "'Rose-Colored Boy' is a song about feeling pressured to look at the world with blind optimism when you actually feel very hopeless about the world and your part in it," the band explained "There is so much social pressure to be (or appear to be) "happy" that we can actually feel shame when we aren't."
"Adding shame to sadness is a pretty toxic cocktail," they added. "It's hard enough to deal with sadness, depression, or any type of anxiety without the added societal expectations. It's important and more healing to meet people where they're at - EMPATHY - than to try and paint everything rosy."

Hayley is actually a pretty decent actor. A lot of music videos can be a bit cringey and awkward because of the artist - which is fine, they aren't actors so we can't expect much - but I find Hayley really believable as an actress. She has great microexpressions.
Her acting in this video was superb but the younger recording scene was really subpar. I wish she could play it out better bcs that opening through out especially the ending was .... life's like.

That part where she sees herself on tape and little Hayley says “what are you doing? This isn’t you.” makes me tear up every time because just so pure and relatable. Everyone has had a moment in their life where they have to return to who they are and cast aside the shackles of societal pressure to act and be a certain way.
I love the After Laughter album because I feel like these are the most genuine lyrics she’s ever written. She’s been so open about her life and her depression and raising awareness and it just makes me love her even more.

I'm honestly concerned for hayley's mental health after everything... the divorce, the lawsuit, the pressure from fans, this must be so overwhelming for her. Hayley, if you're seeing this, I hope you're doing well. You're a good person, you have a lot of talent on your hands and there is no shame in taking care of yourself, taking care of your mental health and giving yourself a break. The people who support you will always understand.
This is also true for everyone out there who's going through a lot recently. You're valid, you're loved, people care about you even if you don't notice it yet. Don't listen to what depression has to say because it's not true, it's the chemicals in your brain playing bad tricks on you

Idgaf chill not exactly sure about what happened with her marriage but they did split up. and back in like 2016 there was a lawsuit with their old bassist jeremy davis against hayley and taylor about copyright issues i believe on the self tiled album. they settled on an agreement in 2017

This album really hit hard for me, at the time that it came out. I had just finally found out that I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, before that I struggled with being “happy.” Suppressing my true feelings. My therapist at the time told me I needed to cry more, so this song in particular really meant a lot to me. I don’t always need to be happy, because that isn’t always possible. However I feel a lot better after crying, because it helps cope with the pain, and helps me grow. This song is my anthem with my battle with accepting crying as a strength and not a weakness.

being that i first listened to all we know is falling at age 9 and am now 21, their music has 100% served as a lil personal soundtrack to my life. so happy they're still around and thriving.
When Haley sees her younger self, gives me full chills and a bit choked up, it makes me think about my younger self that was a dreamer and was writing often. I feel I am a shred of who I once was, never thought fear and depression would affect my life.
This is going to sound corny, but I think you are still the person you were before... But you're more, too. I think of that scene in Moana where she realizes that she is the hero because she chooses to be...and she remembers who she is, where she comes from, and where she's going. I think you can still call up the good things you've been and done before. But you can add to that the learning, depth, compassion and understanding you've gained since then. Nothing is ever truly lost forever.

After Laughter is what happens when Emo kids grow up to be young adults with jobs and the pressure of responsibility and independence, trying to just be happy when it’s never that simple. Hayley has always wanted to be a singer just how I always wanted to be a paramedic... now she has her band and even a Grammy and yet she’s not happy but sometimes the opposite, just like how I just graduated from nursing school at 22yrs but now there’s nights when I can’t sleep. I can relate to songs like this sooo much and that is why Paramore is forever one of my all time favorite bands and After Laughter one of my all time favorite albums.
For all those that don’t like the new retro sound you probably don’t get it. Hayley and the rest of the band are not the same people they were 10yrs ago and although Riot! and Brand New Eyes were amazing albums the bands sound needed to change because they’ve changed. To be stuck in the past is to not be moving forward. Paramore is still Paramore because they are making music that represents them now and not who they were.

The first time I listened to "Hard times" I thought: "This is literaly about depression". I was surprised to see that most of the songs did. I fell depressed (if its the correct term or way to write it down, English isn't my mother language) in 2016. Now I am much better, but it took me about two years to get out from it. Two years of therapy and meds, I feel very lucky because my friends and partner were very supportive. I hope you feel better eventualy too. Take care :)

I understood she was aiming the lyrics to the audience and the rose coloured boy.. but I didn't understand the legitimate pain in these lyrics and just how much PRESSURE she must feel, until now. I’ve been listening to Paramore since 2012. I remember when I 1st heard them it was actually by accident. Heh, heh. My mother & father got me an iPod for my birthday 1 year & the girl my parents bought it from already had her songs downloaded on it. I was upset because I wanted to put my own songs on it but since it was a birthday gift, I accepted it.
So while I was listening to a certain song, I realized it was on shuffle so when the song ended I skipped through them since they were all in a random order.

I’m 23 and I absolutely love this album! Even though the songs sound more upbeat, their contrasted with the rather sad lyrics. I loved their angsty stuff when I was younger and love it now, but I think this is an album I’ve enjoyed the most.
Well this particular band never had anything to do with punk music.. a manufactured band will always follow the trend and guess what? 80's revival is all the rage now :)
ø Павличенко i can’t argue with 80s being a popular trend nowadays but hayley (and i’m assuming the rest of the band too, but i’m more particular with hayley) has been a fan of 80s music ever since. i think that out of all artists who change their music to something more 80s-esque, it fits paramore the best because of hayley’s eccentric style.
Okay, so this is FANTASTIC. A friend of mine just gave a talk in front the school that gives the same message and vibes of this song: it's okay to have emotions other than happiness. To constantly be smiling and happy is something we're constantly told to do to "lead healthy lives" even though it does the exact opposite. Sick video Paramore.

I liked the video. Paramore has been doing a good job for the After laughter's singles. Hayley portraits exactly how I sometimes feel at work. No one really asks you if you are ok or if you are having a good day, everyone just nods along during the whole day even though you can be having an awful day. I liked the honesty Hayley portraits in here one would think the video could be something totally different.

She can't be optimistic (from the song) from Riot! Because she thought she could get over it but it appeared in daydreaming quote "Just don't wanna be here no more, it's not enough", she thought about quitting and not self doubting herself and not pushing friends away. She is putting pressure on herself which was from the first album song pressure where she was pressured to perform to millions of people day in/day out and it made her question her confidence and belief in herself and from proof "pushing back on the unnecessary pressure" of being artists. Quote from Movin' on "We've got our own style, we've got a way of living life, if they can't get down well we don't need them around" she saying that she don't care what other people think and quote from last hope "I don't even know myself at all, and I thought I would be happy (by now)" she tries to push it away. She feels no pain and isn't afraid of hurting anymore (last hope) "that's the hope I have, the only thing that I know is keeping me alive".
You can tell from pressure, Riot!, Self-tilted and After Laughter that she has always felt like someone is controlling her and asking her to put on a face and then inside she feels like it is too much pressure for her to deal with in life.
