      @@TheMuseumGuide definitely! If you're ever in Norfolk, I can recommend the Norwich Castle museum, which is basically the only museum on british soil I visited so far :D I had a nosebleed in front of the egyptian cat mummy, and since it's an inside joke between my friend and I that, whenever we see a cat, "the mummy accepted my blood sacrifice and is out to get me". Lol.

    I live in Macon, Georgia, USA and the Catholic church I grew up going to has a colony of bats living in the bell towers, among other small places in the church. It’s not exactly the same as an incorruptible human hand, but the bats do get confused sometimes and fly down into the sanctuary. It’s a big 1800s gothic church with marble and stained glass, so it’s probably a bit odd-looking to normal people to have bats just doing whatever it is bats do in the church. There’s a BUNCH of them though, so it’s a beautiful sight, especially when they all come pouring out in the evening in the summer! Keeps the mosquitoes somewhat under control.
    Bats need the same hype as bees, because they’re also such important pollinators!

    Jessica, I can tell you for sure that the Rowan/Mountain Ash tree doesn't date back to Thomas Hardy's time. It's trunk isn't thick enough. I have several Rowan/Mountain Ash trees in my yard which were all seeded from a mother tree struck by lightning in my lifetime. Theses trees are twice the size of the "Hardy" one. Also, the Rowan is known as the Witches tree being the most desired for occult practice. Cross two twigs of equal length and bind the center with red cord. Keep this with you for protection or, any place you desire to be protected. I wouldn't take twigs from the Hardy tree. You might have the dead following you instead!😱

    I'm afraid you're right about The Hardy Tree. As soon as you said it was an Ash, my thought was "That's going to be a bugger to fell." It's terribly sad to see so many grand old trees affected. There seem to be a few that are resistant and younger trees are more affected, so far. Fingers crossed for this one.
    Loved this tour around the weird and creepy. No wonder so many Americans are currently fascinated with just how ODD we are.

      The Hardy tree fell down last winter. It wasn't diseased, just old and affected by a storm the previous year. It was a stunning and much loved local feature but it simply came to the end of a long natural life

    • @littlewoodimp
      @littlewoodimp 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@woofbarkyap Thank you for that. I think of that as the tree version of dying in your sleep at 101. Hope some local wood turners were able to make a something as a memorial.
      For the ash especially ,the Terry Pratchett quote "Don't think of it as dying, just think of it as leaving early to avoid the rush." is very apt.

    That was very interesting. How exciting to hear about St. Etheldreda! I knew exactly who you were referring to as soon as you said her name. I am Catholic. She was my confirmation Saint, and we used the English translation of Audrey as my confirmation name. I don't think many people are aware of her, and she definitely isn't one of the more popular Saints. What a rare treat to hear about her! Thank you.

      Very interesting, thank you. Was the image you showed of the mummified nun in a glass case actually Etheldreda? And are any mummified remains visible in London churches now or are they all hidden away?

    • @TheMuseumGuide
      @TheMuseumGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn’t know, because I am Canadian and British.
      Saint Etheldreda’s is not a street. It is a church. The street is called Ely Place. Ely place is indeed the last remaining private street in London, as defined as having its own police force. Ely Place is the only street in London that still has Beadles. Burlington Arcade famously has Beadles, but these are for the shopping arcade, and not strictly the street.
      It’s awfully sad when people try to correct me in a rude way and they are incorrect themselves.

    It's maybe not spooky, but I always thought it was unsettling. In our local church (I live in the south of Sweden) there is a large crucifix hoisted up to the ceiling. Really enjoyed this- fantastic stuff for the countdown to Halloween! Makes me really want to visit some of these churches. Temple Church is also pretty spooky- it was built by the Knights Templar so has some weird features that appeal to conspiracy types, but is also fascinating from a historical perspective. Ely was (sort of) an island in Etheldreda's time, as it was surrounded by marshes. The fens were drained from the 17th century onward to make way for farmland. An Edinburgh trip would definitely be brilliant- ridiculous amounts of great museums, art and history there, as well as plenty of creepy graveyards.

    I stumbled upon your videos by accident last night and I am addicted! In answer to your question about the strangest church I’ve ever been to, I’m reminded of the time I was visiting friends, with my family, in the Netherlands. We paid a visit to the Mummiekelder (Mummy cellar) which is housed in the crypt of a church in the village of Wiuwert, in the province of Friesland. It’s a mystery how the bodies there became mummified, and I seem to remember that it was rumoured the family practiced witchcraft. It’s really interesting to visit, I highly recommend it

    There's a church in Shere, Guildford Surrey & nearby is where i once lived. This church is famous because in the 14 century (not sure) a very pious woman, Christine Carpenter, deliberately asked that she be placed in a small brick cell that was facing north on the very coldest side of the church. No sun reached her in that cell & there she stayed holed up for quite a few years. She was fed by the locals a measly chunk of bread & lived a miserable existence there.
    At one stage she did leave, but to 'escape' the sins of the world was bricked up again. The church is ancient & I feel very luck to have lived there as a child in the 60's because it is a magical place....definitely worth a look
