I've seen some bad targeting penalties, this one at :30 isn't a bad call. This is one of those calls that makes the refs sad that they have to call, because of the lowering of the helmet. honestly if the Arizona player doesn't lower his helmet he isn't ejected, but because he did do that, it was the difference between an ejection and not having one. The player will learn from this and we can move on. I know some say the targeting rule needs to be removed, I think it's needed, but the way that it's changed the last 10 years added alot of things that I think some fans think isn't targeting, and I can understand that. Remember for those who don't remember why this was added, it started with leaping at a player, and then later on they added "you can't lead with the crown of your helmet". So a good reminder of what Targeting is. This is coming from a Big 10 fan.

This has been the rule, now, for 5 or 6 years: this case was not one where both players are out of balance and the offensive player is also being tackled while a second defender is trying to assist in the tackle. This was a receiver in full stride and the defensive player tackles by leading with the crown of his helmet impacting the receiver's helmet on the side as first point of contact during the tackle. It is a textbook, incontrovertible, defined targeting attack, even if the defender "didn't intend" to attack at the helmet. The penalty should suffice. Also, it may actually be time to ask the question: Is BYU good? Personally, I'm going to hold out for another game or two before I ponder it.
My personal thoughts, after my response concerning application OF THE RULE. It is extremely difficult in many situations for an official to judge INTENT. Equally, often the penalty is not commensurate with the effect of a malicious action. IN MY OPINION, if the action is in clear violation of the rule AND the result is an injury, the player taking the action which causes the injury is suspended until the injured is medically cleared to play. If the action is LEGAL but a clear INTENT to cause injury is identifiable - the offending player is suspended for 3 games, or until the injured player is medically cleared to play, whichever is longest.
