So Jeff is starting this BU dive… I know it’s hard but try not to explain the whole story to him in the comments because he’s going to try and make his own interpretation first. When he’s done watching the videos, he’ll watch xCeleste explanation video because I’ve tried to understand the story through so many things and still get confused 😅
I had him react as if I wasn’t there so I really gave him no information to get a genuinely new interpretation. But yes I think it’s okay to tell him about the “girl” lyric replacement but that’s it! Try not to expose more.
Knox Hill also started down the BU, and he is really good at explaining as well.
And I'm amazed this is the first time I've seen Jeff NOT PAUSING at all! He was enthralled!

I always say this when new fans start their journey of "Bangtan Universe" because they get confused after a while and they don't understand why they don't understand. :)) So now I just pretty much copy/paste the same text. :) I know you were already told the order of the videos. But. The continuing storyline in the MVs is not exactly that, don't expect to watch everything like a continuous film. :) It's not like that. If you want a comparison, it's more like a huge puzzle with pieces all over the place. The basic story (let's say it's the frame of the puzzle) is the I Need You MV. Everything else, all the Notes (booklets included with physical copies of CDs with short texts like diary entries), all the other MVs, trailers, short films, etc are like puzzle pieces adding more and more details to the picture. Sometimes it's straightforward, you will understand immediately what's going on, but sometimes you will have a piece of information in your hand but you won't know where to put it until an other part of the picture is put together and all of a sudden you realize the piece you're holding will fit there. The best example is Taehyung killing that man in this MV. When the MV came out we only saw him kill somebody, nothing else. Only when the Notes for that album and his solo song's trailer came out later we found out who it was and why he stabbed him. That's how it works with all the details and information. Sometimes you will only find out the meaning of a detail four videos later. So don't worry if you can't put the story together because we still don't have all the pieces on the table. There will be new albums with new MVs and new Notes to take the story further.
To be totally honest, when you finished with the MVs in the storyline the best thing you can do is watch a storyline explanation video, like xCeleste's for example. 2 parts, really detailed and well put together. Just because it's nearly impossible for new fans to catch up with around 5 years worth of materials in this topic, you would need to read all the Notes, there are clues in 15 seconds-only trailers you would never think of checking out, etc. It's just simply too much. 😁 Just an example about the importance of the different mediums you would need to go through: you saw Jungkook getting a beating in this, right? Why? You will never know if you don't read the Notes that came with the CD. It says:

I freaking love the juxtaposition of them being happy, but also emotionally dying inside, and of them wrestling each other for playing and taehyung literally killing someone, the bridge of the song is one of the best parts of the video
I love their acting (especially jimin's on this one, his scenes are hard to watch cuz it looks so real)

Love the title 😂 I am thrilled to follow you down the BU storyline. I also learn something new each time. It might be helpful to know "girl" is a placeholder for "friend". It is not a romantic song within the MV, at least. ARMY is a very helpful group and we love to share our excitement, so I would suggest you telling us whether you want spoilers or not.
Jeff fully represents me when I discovered the BU, I was so confused, until I started to see all the videos related to the bu in chronological order and I came across some explanatory videos where they completed information related to the webtoon "save me" that is directly related to the BU. And to my curious mind it was a blow to the head. The one behind all this is a genius.
A favorite part of my day is hearing Jeff’s warning “I pause a lot”. 😂 Thank you for the reactions. I won’t even try to explain, I’ll just enjoy the journey. Borahae💜
They substituted girl for friend because it sounded better, but the song isn't about a girl. The lyrics aren't related to the video. The video is related to the storyline not the song itself.
I am one that definitely recommends the explanation video early on.
The song always had girl in it. What you are referring to is when RM mentioned that to understand the video “friend” is more important, not that it was the original lyrics.
YEP they did their own stunts, and yes you are right - they didnt have a big budget - they used their managers as extras, and borrowed the managers cars.
I think the low budget made the MV raw and so much more powerful.
this is a low budget video.. they were just starting by that time.. but I NEED U is the song that gave them their first award.. 🥲🥲🥲
And it's their best mv and song in my opinion. You don't need much money to create a masterpiece

I think it would have been ok to tell Jeff who the girl and man are, as it doesn’t spoil anything and helps you to formulate your own theories a bit easier and understand things better. Also the fact that this song is not about a girl, it was written with the word friend but was changed to girl to make it more marketable.
I love it. I need to see his reaction to the explanation asap. I remember being so confused the first time i got into the BU, but ones you see it explained, you can't unsee it. it all makes sense. it is such a genius in many ways. When you see BTS they seem so light and fun so folks never expect how dark and heavy the BU is when you start it. The story of the 7 characters and their struggles and relationships has created kind of confusing (exceptionally?) confusing series of MVs that individually have elements that let them stand alone but you might leave confused about “why the snickers bars, Fire, and water” but can stand alone. Together it’s really interesting non linear story telling that is just fascinating. It draws people in but also tells life’s lessons as they struggle with very relatable topics that you don’t usually (ever?) tackle in pop music. I mean pop isn’t usually poverty, bullying, suicide, depression, drug overdoses, child abuse, and more. Yet for BTS these are the real challenges of youth or the so called “most beautiful moment in life”. It also how they are indeed with their friendship having beautiful happy moments together despite these things. Enjoy the journey it’s dark but if you like mysteries it’s here.
The hotel name is in hanmun (Kanji in Japanese) , borrowed Chinese characters, but it does not have a meaning in Chinese. It is more like a family name in Japanese. So I guess it is an inn run by this family.
The Darkness visited on these characters is so well-portrayed by the Members (if not entirely cohesive as an overall narrative) it breaks my heart.

BU content, but the mvideo is one of the most interesting ones from their career. And the song oh my... so good! And note that, in most of their songs a girl is never a girl literally. Or a love song is not really about a boyfriend or a girlfriend. 💜

The key to going though the BU is a lot of explanation videos😭 after watching every video I had to watch multiple explanation videos and then once learning about art and literature referenced I had to look into that too. It’s a lot but so worth it. They put so much time and effort into the BU and it’s absolutely amazing. You’ll eventually start to put things together and see how all the videos are related. Good luck on your journey!
Jeff, don't try to or expect to understand everything after just the first BU video 😃 Take in a few, let the scenes develop. Don't stress over it, it's more fun to connect your own dots slowly over time
I suggest to let Jeff to watch all BU MVs (from I Need You...to Flim Out) and let him try to connect them together even if it is a wild guess, then let him watch BU explained

For once you're in the same position as like 90% of ARMY. We all have so many questions about the BU, and even with explanation videos like xCeleste's, nobody can really fully explain the entire BU. It's just too complex. XD
花樣年華 translates to a flower-like period of time (referring to youth), also the Chinese name of the 2000 Hong Kong film "In the Mood for Love." And the motel name is 高野, which directly translates to high (高) and wild (野) in Chinese, at the very least.

Their mv are the real examples of what you are seeing right now is not what actually it is
the gas station is a set yes! (you see it in behind the scenes and they reuse it in other BU videos)

I don’t think it would be fun to watch the explanation video now. I think watching all the videos and making those connects are fun. Then when you watch the explanation video, you can see if you were right or not. But there’s also watching the explanation then watching the videos. So you can be like ahhh I remember that from that.

Taylor, I hope it is okay to tell Jeff that GIRL is used (or inferred) in their songs BUT it is used/inferred to reference the band or ARMY depending on the concept of the song. In I Need U it (GIRL) is used in place of FRIEND.🤷🏾♀️

Welcome to the rabbit hole🐰💜 Ah, I wish someone would give a heads up to the people starting BU with "I need u" to not focus so much on connecting the lyrics to the video, given how we know the lyrics changed and the overall context... It's pretty fundamental to understand that the storyline doesnt focus on romance (until the Highlight Reels I guess) and "I need u girl" just gives off the wrong impression...
This seems like an awesome place to work, too bad I'm in Missouri and not Hawaii. Oh well, I'm excited to see his reaction to the rest of the BU, it's quite the ride. :) Can't wait for more!

It's Okay you can pause all day I enjoy reactions and enjoy you going down the rabbit hole that is BTS. The flower represent each of the boys. the story line is very deep but and nothing of what I originally thought, LOL I love watching knowing you are doing the exact same thing I did enjoy the journey and I will continue to follow.

Yay, finally! No spoiler vids yet for Jeff please. 😅 Let's allow him to discover the BU with that curiosity. It'll be fun to watch him that way. 😁 But one thing for sure, the BU has touched so many topics/ issues that Armys can relate. Yes, it a bit dark but it was the way that drew BTS to my heart and the stark contrast when I watch them in BTS Run episodes, In The Soop and Bon Voyage. 😊 It made them more human and sort of a friend to me. 😊💜💜💜 I hope Jeff enjoys this journey and watch happy and fun BTS vids as well to lighten up because BU is a bit heartbreaking. If he wants to guess the storyline by his own it would be nice if he saw the videos in order, just like ARMY did. Because it will be an even grater mess afterwards when we add the notes, the videogame, and the comic. That's my recommendation anyway.
