    I’m seeing many comments here about Switch and selling at profit (not at a loss) so I stand corrected if this is the case! I meant to speak more generally about companies being able to take advantage of loss leading, economies of scale and cost reduction over time. I didn’t explain that well in the video :)

    • @weaverquest
      @weaverquest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      You explained well, it is just that the logic applies to Sony and Microsoft but not Nintendo. For example you mentioned "cost reduction over time". Not only Switch's price never changed in over 4 years (unlike PS4/Xbox One), it actually got a price bump to $350 with the OLED model even though the screen reportedly only cost Nintendo $10. Nintendo just tries to make profit off every aspect of the console business.

      Nintendo generally doesn't sell hardware at a financial lose but yea Steam Deck looks cool battery life in portable modern on games is going to be not great out of the box. Sure with twerking it can be made to be better and battery packs are pretty cheap right now. I honestly look at this as mini PC it can do everything a normal PC can and it portable

    The main reason I'm considering this device is inflation, here in south america you can't really buy a PC or Consoles anymore unless you're rich and also forget about graphic cards those became items for the ultrarich, with this device you have a PC that you can also game on it, if its specs are enough for modern gaming I can get one and use it as a PC for my design job and also play new games, of course not at max settings but I'm willing to compromise, the price is actually affordable and games on Steam are dirt cheap during sales.

    I think this is also a win for the linux gaming community, because all gamedevs are going to ensure that their games are running on SteamOS. In order to run Windows games on SteamOS, they use Proton, which is also used to run games on linux, meaning that with the steam deck even more games will be playable on linux distributions.

    I have a gaming laptop and a switch and I still preordered the 512gb version as it's such a big deal. Noone has really talked about truly mobile gaming for a travelling lifestyle, which this will enable amazingly for someone who works remotely. You could now slim your tech down to a steam deck, a good smartphone and a portable monitor/ lapdock, all of which would cover a gaming pc, console, display & camera. Not to mention the lower electricity bills you'll be paying with everything running on super optimized dc power, all being charged with USBC cables (no more bulky charging bricks and cables). I can't wait to be travelling and working while still being able to play pc games without having to lug around a beefy gaming laptop that sucks batterys dry. All while still having the option at home to dock the steam deck to a huge monitor and run windows with a mouse and keyboard. Meanwhile samsung is working on Dex which pairs amazingly with a lapdock.. tech life is good right now

    • @tyisafk
      @tyisafk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@NielsenWill It also seems like Proton's compatibility is getting better at an exponential rate. Last time I used Linux I had a lot of issues, including software that just wouldn't run (This was on Manjaro). Literally yesterday I switched to PopOS from the Windows 11 beta and I installed FFXIV and Guilty Gear Strive. XIV only took changing 2 config files and Strive worked out of the box, I just had to map my Brook Universal setup properly through Steam, which btw I did upload it to the community. I have 200 games and the only ones that don't work according to ProtonDB is literally because they have kernel based anti-cheat, which Valve says they've been working on it for a while and are gonna have that fixed by the time the Deck launches.

The community has been waiting for a mobile Ryzen APU with RDNA2 for years and Valve are the first to get a shot at it. On graphics alone this should be around 1.5-2x more capable than any handheld PC on the market. Now the CPU is another story, great but not the best we've seen.

But this thing is aiming for 720p medium setting so it should be somewhat similar in performance to an rx 570 or GTX 1050 ti at 1080p max settings, just 720p medium to highish settings. Does that make sense? I will give you a better example. The ryzen 3 2200g and other apus similar perform similarly to a Nvidia GT 1030 in games. Those are with Vega graphics though and slower ram. Another great and unique device for portable gaming is the ASUS ROG Flow X13.

      X13 has no Handheld mode for gaming, but at least a tablet mode.

      @@Vespene this surprisingly also doesn't apply to just PC gaming. You also see Xbox games being region locked. IdeaFactory used to do this when they had Ghostlight port and publish their games to Steam, as they are a European division.
      There's also cases with Japanese games that are on Steam where stuff like the DOA Xtreme 3 mobage game, the new Idolmaster that's releasing soon, and quite a few SRW games that aren't available in the United States as well.
      Region locking in general is a thing that should frankly die. Valve is the only company that does it now, and actively punishes users for this, because they think people are switching their accounts to Venezuela to get cheap games.

    • @user-it6yw4ee7n
      @user-it6yw4ee7n 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Well, nothing IS futureproof. If you want to game, you have to upgrade your hardware every 5 to 8 years anyway depending on the games you play.
      The Switch can't run Cyberpunk, so it shouldn't be expected for this device to be able to either even if it is reasonably more powerful. The PS4 and Xbone versions of the game have been dubbed unplayable. This isn't a device that is meant to play modern AAA games at 60fps. Handhelds will always be behind when it comes to replicating modern gaming in a small form factor. This is for legacy gamers who want to play old games on the go and possibly some games up to 2018 with additional storage for games like RDR2 and GTA5.

      @@pratikghosh1064 But this is what people say every time. By the time whatever next iteration of this device comes out, it will still struggle with modern games. Elder Scrolls 6 will probably be out by the time a next Steam Deck possibly comes, and well, that next Steam Deck probably won't be able to run it. You just have to accept that handheld gaming will always be behind and won't be able to keep up with home console gaming. And by that time too, they might start bumping handheld resolutions to 1080p when 4k becomes the universal standard and games still struggle to get 1080p60fps even on console. Handheld gaming is a compromise that isn't meant to be futureproof.

    • @ruekurei88
      @ruekurei88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I saw it running Control and the Star Wars Jedi game, so it should be able to run Cyberpunk since it was released for XBO level specs. You'll be playing a PC version tho, so YMMV. And that is a legitimate concern, consoles have the benefit of optimisations and games built for them, PC games are sometimes well optimised, sometimes you're just gonna need to upgrade your rig and that's that-and the Steamdeck is non-upgradeable. It'll likely run games out now fine, but anything pushing/taking full advantage of PS5/XBSX in 2 years time is probably a no-go, or you'll be looking at 'Switch-like' versions of the games.
      Which is another point too, is this gonna be THE sku for 3 years or so since Valve actually welcomes developers to build their own Steamdecks, or will we be seeing a mobile phone/tablet sort of iteration? A bunch of different SKUs each year, by a bunch of vendors, with different specs?

    • @pratikghosh1064
      @pratikghosh1064 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-it6yw4ee7n as you said they might bump it to 1080p, that's still a pretty good deal better than what we will be getting now and I'm aware it won't be future proof for the later titles but product revisions are always better.the PS4 and Xbox one were really underpowered when they first came out and both Sony and Microsoft understood that and the current gen consoles are faster than lots of full fledged PCs. My point is this device might be a prototype for Valve to see the reception and if it's good they can always pump up the specs more. You don't think they could have used a more powerful APU here? They could have but they didn't know how much volume they would sell or how it would be received

      Well youre probably not good at thinking on your feet buddy. The reason you should have IMMEDIETLY given is "the steam deck does what NintenDON'T" It's a gaming handheld.....THAT IS A PC. Simply adding Windows makes the possibilites alone almost endless, the only thing stopping you besides the size is your own creativity of what you want to do with it. Add any store you want, Epic Game Store, Ubisoft, Origin, Xbox Game Pass. Wanna throw emulators on it? Do that. Wanna throw apps on it like Discord or Spotify? Do that. Wanna throw on movies on it or even watch Netflix? DO THAT. The switch doesnt even have netflix or a web browser which is insane considering that the previous generation console from Nintendo had BOTH of those things. Hell even the 3ds had the option to watch netflix on it. Now, if you only like nintendo games and ONLY want to play Nintendo games and do literally NOTHING ELSE with the device then yeah I'd recommend a switch 1000% percent.

    Don’t forget we have had consoles in the past that did allow some customization. That’s one of the reasons why the PS3 was so expensive when it launched. Outside of the Blu-ray drive, you could load Linux onto the system and it also had a reader for any type of modern memory card on the market. Only so many took advantage of it because most only want a plug and play device.

The steam deck is exactly what I wanted a laptop for, to be able to play games on the couch with my fiancé and not having to be sitting at a desk in the room. I have a nice 27” 144hz monitor and I almost never use it anymore because I’m stuck at a desk with it. This is an absolutely brilliant move from valve and I think they will be able to make it successful.

      I have yet to see a brand new PlayStation Studios game on PC because all we got so far are old PS4 games from last generation. When the game has reached a limit for the audience on PlayStation they will then release on PC in a few years which is worrysome if PlayStation division has acquired Arc System Works after they just acquired EVO in March.
      They are now allowing Arc System Works for crossplay between PlayStation and PC for Guilty Gear Strive. They said they were in a verification process which is yet again worrysome Arc System Works has been acquired. PlayStation has their royalties when it comes to crossplay unless they own the company.
      Tekken 7 does not have crossplay. Melty Blood Type Lumina does not have crossplay. Etc.
      SFV was exclusive deal with Capcom so they allowed crossplay with PC in exchange. It was also contracted before PlayStation changed their policies on ecosystem regarded crossplay.
      May 5, 2021:
      "Tekken 7 won't sport cross platform play on PC due to first-party concerns."
      "It’s not a matter of the technology for getting the PS4/Xbox One/PC players to match up against each other being the issue, but rather first party company policies and potential security risks."

    Youre right about the switch not being the most powerful, not the best hardware, not the best in any category, but it arguably has THE BEST games. And thats the same thing thats attractive to me about the Steam Deck. It has the entirety of the steam library, AND i have access to my entire game pass library as well! So instead of playing switch at home, then taking it handheld with me to play on break at work, i can actually play RDR2 on my series X at home, and then go and continue playing it at work as well. All the times ive wished i had game pass on my switch is finally coming true. Even something as simple as wanting to play a triple a game in bed at night will be something that is possible.

    Just the fact that I get to keep my whole Steam library (and Epic library) is already a HUGE win, just to start. I probably won't adopt this early, but it's an easy buy if it's still a good deal a couple years from now.
    The only big concerns atm are battery life and how well it's going to handle newer games. I would not buy this to play new AAA releases, but I'd hope to be able to. Hopefully, developers will strive for graphical accessibility.
    It also remains to be seen whether this will affect the FGC in any meaningful way. Hopefully it solves some of the PC issues, but the fact that this is so small and easy to steal might be enough to justify keeping consoles as the tournament standard. I hope it becomes the best option.

    • @sqwavee
      @sqwavee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ok, here's a quick summary (console comparisons since I guess those make the most sense):
      The GPU is about as fast in raw performance as a base PS4, but it's a much newer and more efficient architecture (the same as PS5/XSX), and it only needs to target 1280x800.
      In other words, it has about the same raw GPU performance per pixel when targeting 1280x800 as the Xbox Series X has when targeting 4k (slightly more actually).
      The CPU is basically half a XSX/PS5, with slightly lower clock.
      16 GB of RAM (really neat), 4x Switch, same capacity as PS5
      Obviously there will be a bit of overhead (varying from basically nothing or even better performance to significant overhead) for running games on Proton compared to Windows, but this is the performance you should expect.
