My nephew is in a Florida prison and it is an absolute mess. PLUS, JPAY, a private company is raking in money from families - they charge for EVERYTHING that is normally free. Get private companies OUT of prisons.

Private prisons should be outlawed!!! NO ONE should profit off of someone else’s incarceration!! That only leads to more incentive to lock more people up and for longer periods of time!! It’s a travesty how we treat prisoners in the USA!! It’s also a travesty that our jails and prisons have become warehouses for the drug addicted (which guards profit off of) and the mentally ill!! These people should be in treatment facilities and mental hospitals NOT jails or prisons!!! How a country treats the weakest/sickest most vulnerable amongst us says EVERYTHING about that country!! We need to overhaul our prison system & we’d be wise to look at prison system in Sweden Norway etc who focus on rehabilitation instead of straight out cruel and unusual punishment like we do!! They have a MUCH lower recidivism rate than we do that’s for sure!!!

The Fulton County Jail is one of the worst in the country. There is one young man incarcerated there that has been locked up for 5 years without an arraignment. They are in the midst of a major bed bug infestation. It must be horrible.

He seems like an upstanding leader with integrity and high standards. I worked as an RN at a state prison and I immediately became a threat to the other nurses because I did my job. The doctors, other healthcare practitioners, and even the inmates thought that I was working over and above for just doing the minimum requirements of the job. I ultimately transferred to a different prison but the overall actions of most of the officers, doctors, nurses, psychologists, etc. were to cheat the system whenever possible. Many were more corrupt than the inmates. I quit because I can’t work with unethical liars. Meanwhile, they get paid for overtime that wasn’t done and retire with a hefty pension and lifetime medical insurance.

It is even worse than they are describing here. The abuse and torment and torture are UnPresidented. It has been incredibly high temperatures across the country and none of these prisons have air-conditioning. They could be in concrete cells with no windows and the temperatures can exceed 110° with no air circulating. This is enough itself can cause somebody to become a delusional, hyperventilate with extreme anxiety.

True. Plus, prison doctors only show up like once a week, and they DO NOT "see patients" in the prisons. The nurses make the decision of getting inmates to nearby hospitals, and dentist offices----which is RARELY.

I worked as a nurse at a Juvie facility in New Haven CT. I lasted 3 weeks. The COs were breaking so many rules. I didn't have a "go along to get along" attitude, and wouldn't give drugs to the COs, or partake in their stealing of inmates foods. Not every job is for me. As a nurse practitioner, I am shocked and saddened to see such negligence on the part of nursing staff. Their gross negligence should earn them strict punishment, revocation to license to ever be able to practice in healthcare again and may the HUMAN BEINGS (no matter what they were in prison for) get justice and haunt their dreams for a very long time. Lack of documentation is negligence per se. I’m sorry these inhuman workers embarrassed your department!

I spoke to the judge about this and his comment was..."The smoke coming out of the foundry chimney isn't smoke....it is pot smoke." I was shocked that a judge would say such a thing and that he knew that this was going on. He explained further that inmates "find ways" to get drugs while in prison. I had a family member that worked as a corrections officer at the Charleston, South Carolina facility.
When I asked him why did he quit his job after working for more than a half decade at the prison he replied.
"It wore me down mentally, it was a daily situation of confronting prisoners that urinated, spit, and threw feces at officers, while
always saying nasty and untasteful things about your wife, grandmother, sisters, daughters.
It was getting too difficult for me to view them as human, and that scared me to the point, that if I no longer could see a prisoner as human,
then I risked retaliating, and becoming just like the animals they are acting like".
So he quit his job in lieu to install metal fences, mind you I helped him in a couple of jobs in my area, rest assured it isn't an easy job at all.
Working in the heat, daily cuts, skin pinches, and hauling heavy fencing, etc.
And I thought, things must indeed be pretty bad in a prison for him to choose to give up his vested contributions in retirement, to install fencing.
However there is indeed a responsibility of proper operations of a prison, and often it should start with the state, to provide for a better means
of removing such prisoners that make daily life even worse for not only prison employees, but also other prisoners.
It's even more troublesome knowing a person that is prescribed 4 meds for mental reasons is sent to a prison instead of a secured psychiatric facility.
That I would place the blame upon the failure of the state legislature, the judicial, and the prosecutors office.

WI DOC Correctional staff ARE trained to pass controlled medications. Not narcotics, but scheduled meds. Just like a caregiver is in an assisted living. The problem with this situation is that the staff has been dealing with understaffing since Covid(2020). Those that work there are working mandatory shifts (16 hours) consistently. Dealing with maximum status inmates is exhausting. These aren’t the sorry good guys that get locked up. These are the guys that can’t manage a medium or minimum custody level. This situation is sad and I’m happy it’s being exposed. Waupun is dangerous, and that’s because there isn’t enough man power to operate it effectively.

As a retired CO, I worked in a prison then a small count jail. Co's are trained to dispense medications and cpr when needed. A nurse would come to the jail once a week, but on call whenever jail staff had questions. Many times due to lack of staff I'd work 16 hrs, off 8 then another 16 mandatory. Basically you're tired as hell and don't think straight.

Who are they to not keep a phone on hand and allow them to call 911!! They keep them sheriff offices separately just to make people unable to get records or figure out jurisdictions. Their union is what’s protecting them from effecting change. They work in capacity of government but are private for profit entities at our detriment. I never been so endangered as them cops done me in Wisconsin. They’re uniformly neglecting and persecuting disabled out of cruelty and for money.
