Kudos on another astounding Lovecraftian reading. Definitely picked up serious Poe vibes from this particular tale, not to mention the hauntingly rich prose of the author is powerful and strikes so many nerves. Certainly has become one of my favorites now.
My theory is that Miyazaki and Lovecraft are secretly related. They have that same highly disciplined madness and love of a super deep, ostensibly unfinished mystery. Plus, that whole "screw your convenience and expectations. you'll take whatever i give you and you'll thank me for it" thing that defines both souls and the dream cycle.

St John as a given name is pronounced "Sinjun" or "Sinjin" One of the most famous examples (apart from Stringfellow Hawks brother in Airwolf...) is the former conservative politician Norman St John Stevas. He served in Thatchers government as Leader of The House, so there is every chance he was also a cultist of Nyarlathotep!
