There is no such thing as "viking metal". Lyrical themes do not create genres. This is folk metal. Amon Amarth sings about Vikings too. Are they "viking metal"? No they are melodic death metal.

Yeah, Sam and Mark met somewhere(I think and an aftershow kickback at a bar, but don't quote me on that) and discussed their certain metal interests. They realized that they both liked at lot of folk music and a lot of folk music-influenced rock bands like Iron Maiden, Amorphis, Nordman, etc. When Ensiferum lost Jukka-Pekka, 2 bassists were auditioned. In Mark's words, the 1st guy that was auditioned only knew how to play 1 Ensiferum song while Hinkka knew how to play everything.
