Today, january 30th, 2024, Jan de Rooy has died. First garnering attention in Rallycross, then by driving DAF trucks through the African Desert. The Suitcase, The Bull, Two Headed Monster, Turbo Twin 1 and 2 . Thank you for colouring the youth of an eight year old snot nosed boy. Will always remember that hideously fast truck barreling through the Sahara. RIP. Suddenly the music of this video fits unexpectedly well :(
One can only speculate what was going through Vatanen's mind when he looked to his left and saw that daf overtaking him, at 200+ kph. Must've been something like MFG! Best Dakar footage ever!
So this was uploaded in 2006, home digital video editing wasn't really a thing yet if I'm not mistaken. Meaning this whole video was done completely by hand. They were recording individual segments from VCR tapes then adding music in at the end. Finally converting it to digital and uploading it. Bravo, new favorite video on YT.
Do you really think? In the late nineties I already did full digital video editing. Using a Fast AV Master 2000 card to capture analog video from my Panasonic MS1 S-VHS camera and other analog video sources. It was a great capture card. In 1998 this setup was complemented with digital footage from Canon Optura MV1. Superb quality in bright light but low light performance was terrible.
Yeah, GPU's with ViVo (video in video out) was crazy common wether you had ATi or NVIDIA, they even had TV tuners built right in. I think my friend in grade 10 had a 9800Pro with ViVo in 2003
Best rally truck ever made, untill the 2nd truck made a devasting high speed crash. After that they started to change regulation and rules to reduce power and speed. 80s saw some of the best and fastes cars ever made, remember Prototype C le Mans , Group B rally, F1 turbo era. 80s what a era that was :-)
I can't stop watching this video, man. It's the first time I've ever seen an automotive video on TH-cam with music that actually fit. The clips fit together so well...awesome job.
The good old 80's, whether it was world rallying, F1, rally raids... "F*** safety, just make it as light and as powerful as possible, and let's go racing!"
The risk of racing; you might get injured or get killed. All the great things we have now, is because there were men and women brave enough to test them, regardless of their own safety. Think of airplanes and so on... So please continue to push the boundaries!
I was a huge fan of the rally, and living literally a few miles from the Dutch DAF complex, these trucks were ever so often seen. They were beasts since The Bull in 1985 won.
The driver who died in from the DAF team, was already warned by Jan the Rooy. That driver was ranked on the first place while driving his first rally. And faster then Jan, who is the most experienced driver. Jan said that the truck was gaining momentum (jumping) above a specified speed, because of lots of small but high wobbles in that part of the track. I think he also regrets it that he didn't warn enough.
In the accident of the video one member of De Rooy's tripulation was dead an he took the decision of not take part in the Dakar anymore. However he returned to the rally in 2002 with his son and with DAF also.
Wondreful Video i grew up with Offroad driving in Norway and been watching the Dakar since early 2000`s and watching it again this year just brings me back to the insanity of the 1980`s and the Magnificent DAF Trucks. Jan De Rooy is Total legend of Motorsport. RIP Kees Van Loevez Co driver DAF X2 1988
Tudo a ver.
Yes, when one realized that the car itself was a monster specially developed to win the Paris-Dakar, driven by WRC champion Ari Vatanen no less, the truck overtaking it looks out-of-this-world unbelievable. I can only imagine what Vatanen was thinking being overtaken by that truck. Probably "Am I dreaming?" He probably also learned what the the driver of the car in Spielberg's debut movie "Duel" (1971) felt like not being able to lose a truck that goes faster and faster...
1200HP with Alu spaceframe. Speed at that moment aprox 185km/h. Topspeed +/-205-210km/h. Jan wanted to continu the race but The DAF-president stopped them.

He was disqualiqied before the start of dakar because of a stupid reason. The organisation said that there was somthing wrong with the homologation (don't know if it's correct translated). Simply said, the organisation said that there was a problem with the papers/administration
@MartinVDB1984 ....just like Brabham's infamous "fanmobile" -BT46B- after winning the 1978 F1 Swedidsh Grand Prix from the outright -it was banned from racing on "safety grounds" as other racers complained of being "showered" by gravel/sand-

It is about driving skills. Thats right that DAF turbo twin was probably the best truck in dakar history, but if De Rooy drove the same Tatra as Loprais, he wouldn´t be as good as he was

Warner shouldn't be whining about 'their' music being used for such a great clip! if it wasn't for the fact that i already bought the two albums from DM that are featured, i would download them just to get even!!!

Crazy that a video from 35 years ago was uploaded to a random website 17 years ago and were watching it today like "hell yeah"

Found it after 14 years, still think its one if the best
Same
Depeche Mode, Never Let Me Down. Upbeat music and troubled lyrics.
Wow, that was a beast! Can you imagine, that this truck had max speed over 220 km/h (140mph)?! Badass legend :)
Sometimes says 240km/h in rough terrain.
Wow, can you imagine how to drive that track on that speed? I can't. The guys really heroes.
Yeahhh, absoluty beast of Dakar.. .

80's race history is not about race. It was a real competition between man and machine who is stronger. Usually man, but sometimes machines took over.

Driver?
Navigator died, not the driver. The X1 had 1.220 hp (3 turbos on each engine instead of 2 at the X2)

Jan de Rooy. An unsong hero of motorsport.
Third place in Dakar overall. In a truck. noone before and after de Rooy did it . Absolute badass.
just saw this thing in action a week ago at the eurocircuit. it is almost as old as i am but it is still a downright beast. way ahead of it's time
it was the best period of the paris Dakar .
In loving memory of Kees van Loevezijn .

Aerodynamics don't matter when you've got enough power to move the factory you've been built in

-Super soundtrack!
-1 month to Dakar!
it was not the de Rooy truck that crashed but the second truck. and it was the mechanic that didnt survive .but still a superb vatanen moment!!!
i want the 80's back not today safety regulations, but we still have the TT isle the man
because of this accident the daf factory stopped racing in dakar..good video
gives me goose bumps to see a b-group rally car being overtaken by a huge truck.. it's unbelieveable

15 years masterpiece video.
Everything about this video is perfect
the song is called: never let me down again
it's from the band: depeche mode
awesome video !!!!
@Casillerou Actually, there were three turbo compressors on each engine.
6 turbines on 2 engines. 1200 bhp.

This is an masterpiece of uploading a video
una verdadera máquina del desierto!!!
Everything was bigger in the 80s 🔥
No. Just 1200 hp. Each engine. It had two engines. 2400 hp in total, with 6724 ft-lb of torque. 150mph of top speed. On sand.
It's insane, amazing
2400 hp in the 80s is insane, today the Volvo Iron Knight can reach that power
It had 2 engines with 650bhp, it stands in the DAF museum nowadays like the rest of Jan de Rooy’s monsters.
Good stuff. Good music too 👌
210 km/h(.6254)= 130+ mph!
man, that was a crazy contraption of raid truck
First video i ever saw on TH-cam.
Nice video and excellent music !!!
Love this truck guys!😊
Fun fact the song used is 1 year older than the DAF turbo twin
The very Dakar... The very time very pilots
Yes, I think that's the correct translation. Jan is # 502 this year, driving the Ginaf. The race starts on 6th January.
that truck has 2 engines each about 1000hp, a few years ago the raced a evo 5 rally car and the truck won the race

3:50 - famous "common start" with motos, cars and trucks... Everyone did "pedal to the metal" and someone died in the DAF....
Roy had been in lisboa-Dakar (2006 ou 2007) and was not alloewd to run, only due to some paper problems...
un super camion
Could you imagine, if we had the ball to build and race trucks like this now 300kph.
it is depeche mode, but don't ask me which track....i've never been a fan from this band
But you surely find it on youtube ;)

As I remember it was the X2 and got to do with the bouncing, unballenced, rolled over and one was launched.
I wonder what the weight of that truck was.
Que fuerte
where was he last year?
Having seen this truck in person, it seems tame on this video, all i can say is Deutz power
May he rest in peace
Deux moteurs , plus de 1000ch😮
