    Cracking looking valve radio in the background. My hobby is restoring such radios. Hope yours works ok.
    Thanks for all your videos, very, very interesting and informative.

    I am a nurse.. why would I watch a video about blacksmithing? Ha! But your passion and enthusiasm is so engaging..
    So.. I only found your channel today... I have been watching all your videos most of today.. lovely.. thank you 😊

      Since I watched this video yesterday.. my TH-cam feed is full of ‘so you want to be a blacksmith’ type videos 😂 Maybe it’s a sign? The universe is telling me to give up psych nursing and make gates and stuff.. ha! Though I have difficulty banging in a nail.. 😬 I still love your videos.. even if I don’t understand lots of the info.. please don’t do any dodgy erotic book reviews.. or I will have to explain my YT feed.. that would be awkward 😐

    Would love to hear your “broad” book recommendations. What do you read as you sit by the fireplace you’ve made under the roof you hammered down? (I’m sure I’m not the only who knows absolutely nothing about homesteading and building but nevertheless finds your videos entertaining!). 🤠

    I’m obsessed with old homesteading books atm :D I’ll for sure get the hubby some of these as he would love to learn more about the art of a blacksmith . thank you for a very informative video :)

    These video are a huge help for me, as I am a young lad looking to leave the world of work and hopefully live off grid one day. The books are one of the stepping stones to help. Thanks

    "... 'bout books. Remember those?" 😂😂😂 a quarter of my (working) life I spent pronging seaside second hand bookshops in search of everything printed related to seamanship and navigation and sailboatbuilding and singlehanding .... that was before the youtube academy and online-research of course.
    So much easier today, and that because of people like You going outta their way to let others participate in their knowledge. Thank You!

    My Great grandfather was a Blacksmith, my Grandfather worked with him for a while on a few occasions but they could never get on. We have a couple of horse shoes that Great grandfather made and I'm sure that I still have a photo of him shoeing a horse with my Grandfather holding the reigns
    At school we were taught a little about smithing but I never kept it up which I now realise is a great pity.
    Thanks for posting the video Max.

    My grandpa had a blacksmith book written sometime in the 1800s he let me read through one summer. When died I asked my Aunt if I could have it, but someone else had beat me to it.

    Yeah!! Max's booklists, can't wait for Part 2, maybe you could throw in some fiction too. You could turn it into a series. Oh and I love the radio set in the back, those old models are so gorgeous. Does it still work?

      Yep more or less it does, but as it uses rather a lot of power and only picks up local radio, I tend not to!

    More Im going old I started to appreciate books over internet. In books, you know the one written them and its kind a clean knowledge compared to internet source, which is more like polluted with everything...

    • @simeonmihaylov6123
      @simeonmihaylov6123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same. Also a lot of TH-camrs are not even showing the interesting part of diy projects. It's all nice and fancy with some music on the background, but when you try to do it - you will often fail, because in a youtube video you have only the start and the fast forwarded version of the process and of course the final result and it seems so easy, but it is not. Especially if you are doing something for the first time. This is when the books are great, because they will give you more knowledge. Sure, they require more time to read them, but the end result is totally worth it. Of course there are some youtubers like Max who are sharing everything in detail, which is great, but the tough part is find more like him.

    It's interesting, max, how the aestheticism - indeed, outright fictions - take over as the craft becomes mechanised. How quickly misinformation takes over. I wonder if the cantilever between ideas and practicality has transformed the approach, or it's utility? Strange there's no straightforward manual/bible for blacksmithing

    No bs here. I like books but don't have the patience to read them. Now if you wrote one I'd buy it. It's always good to read something by someone who knows what they are talking about and who is prepared to think outside the box when solving problems due to no cash.

    What is the role and relationship of blacksmithing compared to welding and metalwork?

    • @maximusironthumper
      @maximusironthumper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say blacksmithing is the part of metalworking that involves actually moving the metal around rather than cutting or sticking it together.

    You're dismissive of Donald Streeter's book, Professional Smithing, and you omit two other great books, namely,
    Country Blacksmithing by Charles McRaven
    Edge of the Anvil by Jack Andrews
    Percy Blandsford was a cottage industry of one, churning out mediocre at best, books…
    Thumbs down!
