@marcowitkamp you should read up what a diesel is and what principal it works on. a diesel doesn't need any "power" ac/dc wise to run, no spark plugs no nothing hand cranking would give the same result reving an engine up is bad in any circumstance except minus temps (C) perhaps, if a gas engine can't manage to keep ignition up after it is running its just bad design. this is a diesel..... hear the knock ^^
This is a small pre-combustion chamber engine, you need some way of heating the glow plugs, you could crank it all day and not get a start if the engine and glow plugs are cold. The revs are a bit unstable? It's a little twin cylinder, man it's doing great to even run at that low a speed! Personally I would rev it just a little bit higher to warm it up a bit quicker, maybe 1200 - 1500 until some of the ignition knock caused by the engine being cold settles down.
This video proves the point that you should never just start the engine and leave it in full neutral. One should rev the engine a little bit, so the alternator actually makes power. Now the engine is using power, hence the pumping of the revs. Nice little engine though!
That's a great looking engine. Sounds good to. Love it.
It is better to run it a tad above idle as soon as it has oil pressure. JUST a tad, to get the vibration out of it.

3 cylinder
check or change the oil inside of you're injector pump to smooth the idle out. often it is neglected.
How that done?
