I'm old enough to remember when my city tested these every Friday at noon. It was during the cold war when we all thought the Soviet Union was going to nuke us, and they had to make sure these "air raid" horns were in working order.
I always wondered what they looked like.

My hometown in Georgia USA tests the sirens every Saturday at noon but they replaced the sirens a little over a decade ago with electric ones which is just glorified speakers.
I know this is an old comment but in case you see this, the siren here is a WWII model; ones that used air horns came a bit later.
In my town they went on every Wednesday at 3pm. I was on the other side, we had to test the sirens in case the Americans was going to nuke us.

The sound of this used to terrorize me as a little boy. They used to test these things back when I was in kindergarten and first grade and all that. The teacher would teach us “duck and cover” and make us get under our desks where we had to stay until she said we could come out. The sirens were so loud and scary. I used to cry my eyes out and wanted my mom, but of course she wasn’t there because I was at school. Even today, the sound of that siren makes my stomach get tight. That sound never means anything good. It always means you’re in danger and better hide inside somewhere. I’ll bet my entire generation has PTSD about these damned things.

Nice to know what the warning siren sounds like, for when the nukes hit.
It’s generally means “get indoors and take cover”. It’s used for nuclear attack, air attacks like bombs or missiles, tsunamis, and tornadoes. Just FYI so if you ever hear one in real life, it may not be a nuke, but it may not be a joke either. It could mean you’re area is about to get smacked to hell by a force of nature. Idk if anyone else has it the same way, but the air raid sirens that were set up in my area during the Cold War are still working and used today. The fire departments use them to to signal that there’s a general emergency like a fire, a car accident, or even an EMS call. Some departments have even taken the expense to update the sirens. I’ve been told that if I hear it turn on and play for 3 minutes, it’s time to start preparing for the end

To this day we have one of these here in Opunake, New Zealand. It is tested at 12 midday EVERY day of the year and people stop work for lunch when it goes up. Primarily it is still used for Fire and Ambulance callouts..as these are volunteer services and not everyone walks around with their pager on it remains a useful backup. Dad was ex RNZN and RN WW2 and also ex-Army Korean War. He did not enjoy hearing the siren go up every day as he had been in London and other parts of the UK when air raids were on ...some bad memories of things he wouldn't even talk about. I believe there are quite a few of these still in service around NZ. Best wishes. Dave.
Yes still used in havelock north for the volunteer fire brigade in Hawkes bay, grew up as a kid hearing this every second week knowing what it meant with English parents and my grandparents who lived through the blitz

I think of the worst aspect of this sound is the wind down. People always talk in comments about how the sound of an air raid siren can invoke feelings of fear even in people who have never experienced them for real, simply because we know the association of what the sound means. But for me, that wind down, the slowly fading away sound, is the most powerful part of it. Because I imagine the families in the war slowly starting to emerge from their bunkers, unsure of what the damage was and what pieces have been left for them to pick up.

Growing up in Minnesota in the 60’s our 100 year old elementary school had an air raid siren on the roof. Every so often they’d test it and we’d all file down to the basement and sit facing the stone wall taylor style with head down with hands clasped over our neck. This was going to save us from a nuclear blast somehow. In the summer it would go off whenever there was a tornado warning. We’d run outside and grab the bikes, lawn chairs, Tonka trucks, clean laundry off the clothes line and take everything inside then huddle down in the dank unfinished cinder block basement until the siren stopped and it was all clear. That sound is so eerie.

In the Region in Germany where i live, they test these sirens every month. But with a different rythm (It's used when there is a fire or a crash) The Rythm is 3 ups and downs of the Siren, but the downs are way slower than shown here. It hits different when that sudden second up comes earlier, you know its either a nuke or a different test which only happened once in my lifetime
The town I live in still tests these everyday at noon. It's actually not as loud as I remember it being nearly two decades ago, but that may just be my hearing getting worse (I've had ear issues since I was born).
They also test them on the first Tuesday of the month at 10am.

The term boomer is used too often in modern society and while it can describe certain people well, it can be unnecessary to call someone it when they only mean well.
I don't want a full sized, but I wish they could make a scale model (assuming that the smaller it gets, the quieter it is too.) I would want TONS of those.
what you want is a "hand crank siren" you can find some for around 40 bucks or so.

They make smaller ones for around $150 but the problem is the sound they produce is not as consistent and fades much more quickly. They generally give out about 145db of noise which is just a little less than double a normal speaking voice.

I remember the testing of this thing when I was a small kid. What was it, the last Friday of the month or something like that? All I knew was that it was a warning that something terrible was about to happen, so thanks to whoever the hell filled me in on that.
