I think of the worst aspect of this sound is the wind down. People always talk in comments about how the sound of an air raid siren can invoke feelings of fear even in people who have never experienced them for real, simply because we know the association of what the sound means. But for me, that wind down, the slowly fading away sound, is the most powerful part of it. Because I imagine the families in the war slowly starting to emerge from their bunkers, unsure of what the damage was and what pieces have been left for them to pick up.
It’s generally means “get indoors and take cover”. It’s used for nuclear attack, air attacks like bombs or missiles, tsunamis, and tornadoes. Imagine hearing this at 4:30 AM in the morning. I just did today. It was still dark, which is the perfect timing to take a city by surprise for a bomb drop. Woke up my mother, then my father, and as my father was rushing outside to take a look the siren stopped. False alarm. It was the soldiers at the nearby army camp doing some sort of "drill", as I found out. You can probably imagine the number of emotions I went through in just under a minute.
One day while me and my family were driving home from church and decided to stop at a Dunkin Donuts when I heard this sound. My family wasn't startled by it because, and I quote, "we don't know why it's going off". On the other hand my soul left my body in sheer terror for at least a minute until I realized it went off because a fire was happening somewhere else because a fire truck sped by where we were. Seriously what kind of town or city uses the air raid siren to announce that there is a fire?! Sure a fire going off is serious but not air raid siren serious!
Honestly, I actually think these kinds of sirens are super cool. It's not the kind of way you conventionally expect a sound like this to be made, nowadays. But it's really simple, really reliable, and incredibly easy to maintain (at worst you'll need to replace the motor). And I'm pretty used to hearing this kind of siren on the regular (though usually not as loud); fire stations in my area fire them up when they receive a call. Though, I've heard a lot of stations switch to electronic sirens, which just don't sound as good. :
Growing up in Minnesota in the 60’s our 100 year old elementary school had an air raid siren on the roof. Every so often they’d test it and we’d all file down to the basement and sit facing the stone wall taylor style with head down with hands clasped over our neck. This was going to save us from a nuclear blast somehow. In the summer it would go off whenever there was a tornado warning. We’d run outside and grab the bikes, lawn chairs, Tonka trucks, clean laundry off the clothes line and take everything inside then huddle down in the dank unfinished cinder block basement until the siren stopped and it was all clear. That sound is so eerie.
Giggal Germany is perfectly prepared for a case of war since it was drilled for the emergency since it wouldve probably been the center of war if the cold war became an actual war. The security standards were kept although the cold war is over. That's why we also still have signs infront if every bridge that show how heavy a tank is allowed to be to cross that bridge.

God damn that sound is chilling... and I didn't even grow up in the cold war era
i lived by an army base where once a week they would test the air raid siren. yeah it is loud and they still do tests so they have people who can operate them when needed.
We still use these guys no matter the cold war has finished. They serve as flood warnings
that because loud noises like that does strike terror infact it's probably your genetics saying fuck i need to run that's a big pack or an angry alpha...i know this because i've scared many to death with only raising my voic3...it's the first sign i'm turning on you.

Getting closer!
one day i will buy one of these and i will put her on the roof of my '54 chevrolet pickup... but first of all i will buy a '54 chevrolet pickup
mmhp, an old pickup with bulletproof glasses, this alarm on the roof, an old fashionating ww2 american submachine gun on the back, red paint and five (one for reserve) of these wheels with the white stripe at the side, the gas tank full and this war machine is ready to a war, and trust me, here in italy shits like isis & co. can attack us when they want, so one of these homemade tanks can be usefull in chase of an attack
They're called Whitewall tires btw, but pickups aren't bulletproof, try filling the door panels and fenders with concrete
I think something like that might be too heavy to put on the roof of a truck.

The most terrifying sound a human can hear. It means the end of all you have ever known untill that point. I hope to never hear that IRL.
its being used in my country for curfew announcement due to covid haha
Imagine hearing this at 4:30 AM in the morning.
I just did today. It was still dark, which is the perfect timing to take a city by surprise for a bomb drop.
Woke up my mother, then my father, and as my father was rushing outside to take a look the siren stopped. False alarm. It was the soldiers at the nearby army camp doing some sort of "drill", as I found out.
You can probably imagine the number of emotions I went through in just under a minute.
@@nebroskitheraut6705 My stomach turned just reading that. I can readily imagine what you went through.
That's horrible. :(
One day while me and my family were driving home from church and decided to stop at a Dunkin Donuts when I heard this sound.
1. Hear siren
2. Sky turns dark, ash starts falling from the sky and a thick fog shows up.
3. shit... Why did I vacation in Silent HIll
Hahahahaha why dont they make a new silent hill game? :(
4.looks down and see's body...yeah i'm dead, thanks GENETICS -_-
That's what I think too! Silent Hill is great.
Me: playing sound near to my grandfather
Grandfather: starts wearing equipments
Honestly, I actually think these kinds of sirens are super cool. It's not the kind of way you conventionally expect a sound like this to be made, nowadays. But it's really simple, really reliable, and incredibly easy to maintain (at worst you'll need to replace the motor). And I'm pretty used to hearing this kind of siren on the regular (though usually not as loud); fire stations in my area fire them up when they receive a call. Though, I've heard a lot of stations switch to electronic sirens, which just don't sound as good. :
Me: Pulls a prank on Grandpa with this Siren.

Iraqi here, this brings back so many bad memories from 2003..

LEGEND 25 but were hearing it...
Giggal the sirens were originally for fires but are outdated by now, they are tested anyways regularly for a case of war or a catastrophe.
Giggal they are in every town in Germany by the way
Giggal Germany is perfectly prepared for a case of war since it was drilled for the emergency since it wouldve probably been the center of war if the cold war became an actual war. The security standards were kept although the cold war is over. That's why we also still have signs infront if every bridge that show how heavy a tank is allowed to be to cross that bridge.
Its not that loud in real life, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/2ABVD50RmY4/w-d-xo.html
