    I’m still trying to figure out why Guam and Puerto Rico are being left out of the conversation. If you’re going to add D.C. you might as well add the islands. The people there have earned their representation in our government as well. They serve in our military but don’t get a vote?

    • @ShawnLH88
      @ShawnLH88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I’m,ways say this as well...the USA doesn’t care about them because they’re brown...if Guam and Puerto Rico were white they’ve would’ve been states 100 years ago

    • @Nejove
      @Nejove 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      In the case of Puerto Rico, at least, I think there has been some offhand mention of it as a side note in some places, so I wouldn't say they're being left out of the discussion completely; they're just being treated as outside the scope of this particular bill. I think it's probably about doing things one step at a time if they're going to get through the legislative process at all rather than overcomplicating things. The legal status and issues surrounding representation for U.S. territories like Puerto Rico and Guam are different from D.C.'s situation, and bundling them all together seems more likely to decrease rather than increase support for the bill.
      I absolutely DO believe that territories like Puerto Rico and Guam SHOULD get congressional representation, as well, and D.C. statehood might establish a precedent to make it easier for them to gain statehood in the future, but the democrats are probably thinking, "He who chases two birds catches neither."

      I don't think they're being left out of the conversation so much as this is an interview with the DC representative, about specifically the culmination of her life's work, her bill being passed.
      Puerto Rico statehood speculation *has* been in the news recently, so that conversation *is* (still) happening.
      As for the rest of the territories, I confess to ignorance as to their Statehood aspirations, which I am about to go remedy. Cheers!

To be honest, all the more grounds to pass the bill for DC statehood.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's precisely why there is Republican opposition to it, and it is the reason they won't say it aloud. There has been a precedent for states to be added in pairs since Maine and Missouri in the mid-1800's, as a compromise to get around this issue. The states have often been added in pairs of opposite political views to avoid creating an imbalance of Senate power. Obviously, majority political views of states change over time, as is evident that Maine has mixed political views between its two senators, but at least it is balanced at the time of statehood when following this precedent.

Meanwhile ND has 762k, SD has 884k, WY has 578k, Mt has 1.1mil, AK has 731k. These states have an incredible amount of power per voter than places like California, NY. I am firmly in the Pro-Statehood camp, but making DC as state does - in my view - open up the question of whether other cities/urban regions should also become states. Like a lot of political questions it can be fine for it to just sit on the table for a long time, but I do think making DC a state does acknowledge it being there. (Personally we should elect Senators on a national ballot, with the top 33/34 vote-getters getting the job. But making a bunch of urban regions states in their own right would be a useful step to redressing the inequities of senatorial representation.)

    • @jeffreyestahl

    • @bobf5360
      @bobf5360 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no, it doesn't open up that question. All of the cities besides DC HAVE REPRESENTATION in both the House AND the Senate. We in the District have neither. We pay federal income taxes (more than 29 other states and Puerto Rico), we fight in wars in the Armed Services.
      And your notion of how to pick Senators is completely inconsistent with the role of the Senate- it is the body where the STATES are represented- not the People, that is the House of Representatives. The Senate exists as it does because the US is not, and has never been intended to be, a representative democracy. It is a democratic Republic, as a Federation of States. It is essentially designed to be ruled by a rural minority, and it is.
