  • The greenhouse coral farm is the original building that started Tidal Gardens. I get asked all the time if I am going to take this building down now that I have the new building.

    It’s good to stay connected to your roots. The greenhouse is your roots. Makes sense that you would never tear it down. :) Thanks for the insight and tour.

      Yeah if you can insulate a greenhouse to function like a normal building for a fraction of the price of new construction, then you are doing it right. Only reason to destroy an old building is safety, or to put another one in its place.

    • @tidalgardens

      Very true!

    • @tidalgardens

      I would like to one day insulate the greenhouse. I was thinking of injecting non-expanding foam into the wall cavities, but my worry is that the foam is open cell and not closed cell.

    2002….that’s an OG greenhouse. I remember joining reefcentral in the mid 90’s. That greenhouse started it……don’t let it go.

    Looks like it takes a pretty standard motor like you would see in a lot of other electronics like a dishwasher washing machine somewhere along those lines were you not able to find just a replacement motor

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Luckily it was a problem with the wire contacts and not the motor. I should have a backup one just in case.

    Love your videos. Just completed a project at work that replaced a 30 year old greenhouse. Agree with the cooling pad idea. Also think replacing all shade cloth with aluminized would be a good move. Do you have operable ridge vents that could let the heat out. Maybe contact a greenhouse company that could suggest other small budget modifications.

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No ridge vent, but we did install three whirly-bird vents that did help a lot with evacuating hot air out.

    I think you should tear it down if/when you expand into another warehouse.

    STAY . You could build a solar panel array which store electricity into lifepo4 battery . You need to keep the temperature of this battery above 50°f , they do not like the cold . Maybe , this setup could earn you extra monies or as an emergency backup in your property .

    Why not add an “air envelope” above the ceiling, that will protect the lights from drips. Essentially sealed layer of plastic with forced air. It will add insulation R value with not much cost.

    😂 running that green house in the UK even with our old energy prices would be an absolute non starter in terms of turning a profit & with the UK's current & predicted future astronomical energy price hikes I just look at that place making bank with utter amazement!!! I'm glad it's able to keep on trucking though!

  • @tstanley01
    @tstanley01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No...it was a cool experiment but you are running a business and tinkering with the limitations of your building are distractions you don't need...I would rather use a little more energy and have a rock solid environment...If it has a nice concrete slab, I would tear it down and put a metal building on it for dry storage....

    • @kentofmississippi

      My orchid greenhouse has swamp coolers on a shelf in front of the window. Kind of a rigged version of what you are talking about. Dual purpose humidity and cooling is great for tropical plants. Though, Might not be the best idea when condensation is an issue. I couldn't imagine having radion xr30s in my greenhouse during winter. It is like a tropical rainforest in there with all the condensation. I"m on the gulf coast. I can't imagine what it is like in a lake state, but it makes me wonder.

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think swamp coolers in Ohio are less effective because of the humidity. In dry climates they work wonders.

    Stay and do some trials in it. Investigate coral metabolism at different temperatures and with the exposure at different levels of sunlight against the conditions at the other new building. Let me know your insights about this. Regards.

    in normal sercum stances id say it be cool keeping the green house, as long as before the summer hits u get like a back up fan or 2. Just to keep the green house going souly for inventory if u see the extran fans needing to be replaced every few months to years. In your eye seeing if thats worth the cost. if not then id say scrap the green house. Or even like u said adding a new fan just make sure u always have extra of said exhaust fan just incase another blow out happens and for what ever reason u cant get a replacment

    Instead of replacing the fan why not just replace the motor? Even if an exact replacement isn't readily available, these type motors are a dime a dozen online and with a little modification you could get it to work.

    Is geothermal the primary method of heating? What is the secondary source? Are there any old videos where you talk about the heating? I've probably watched them in the past but don't recall. I am in the early stages of considering an out building primary for fish grow out but all the greenhouse information I find is about keeping them from freezing vs keeping them at tropical temperatures in the winter. Greenhouse seems like it would be much cheaper and potentially more useful then say a large garage / mini warehouse.
