Was assigned to the Ridgecrest resident post of the C.H.P. in the mid to late 80's. Did quite a few movie production and commercial shoots in Randsburg back then
Those were the days, I'm sure. Was Randsburg more populated back then? I've been there twice in the past few years and it is dead quiet with next to nobody around. Thanks for watching and commenting...much appreciated!
@@SWExplore Actually it's probably more populated now. I remember they hired us to do traffic control on the main street through town. Easy money as there was virtually no traffic to speak of. Maybe some people would be there to watch the "goings on", but that was about it
I'm wondering if you went last time during Old West Days. I went yesterday and it was very bustling with a live band, vendors, reenactments, etc. I've been told that is the biggest event there during the year. Lots of fun!
I believe that our first ever trip to Randsburg was in summer of 2020 (not sure the date), so this may very well have been during Old West Days -- there were lots of activities and people visiting then. This current trip in late June of 2022 was in sharp contrast as the town truly resembled a living ghost town. Nonetheless, it is an exciting place to visit because of its history and lore. Thank you for watching and offering comment, Shelly. We appreciate your support for our fledgling channel!
Be forewarned that Randsburg is deep in Trump country, but putting politics aside, it's a fun day to visit. Here are some facts I pulled up to share with you... Randsburg's yearly festival is called Randsburg Old West Day & Bluegrass Jamboree. It is held on the third Saturday of September each year. This year, the festival will be on September 16, 2023. The festival features live music, vendors, food and drinks, a car & bike show, a petting zoo, old west reenactments, a costume contest, games and prizes. There is something for everyone at Randsburg Old West Day & Bluegrass Jamboree. The festival is sponsored by the Rand Desert Museum and is a great way to experience the history and culture of Randsburg. If you are looking for a fun and family-friendly event, be sure to check out Randsburg Old West Day & Bluegrass Jamboree.
I've visited Ridgecrest but only drove through briefly on my way up to connect with the 395. I once visited Randsburg on the weekend they have their Randsburg Gold Rush Days Festival. Was a lot of fun with lots of people there. I heard that the General Store was sold in 2016 to a new owner (Brad Myers) who has painstakingly restored the place to its former glory days. Thanks for watching and commenting...much appreciated!
That is so sad to hear how Randsburg has, more or less, shut down. Are there still people living in Randsburg? I haven't been there since 2021 and the place was pretty quiet.
That is a manure spreader. I used to use them when I was a lot younger. Manure isn't used for fertilizer, like it once was. Have a great day 😃. Bo Johnson- Tucson, AZ
Thanks, Bo! A few others had explained to me that it was a manure spreader...who knew, surely not me who has lived in a city all of my life. I hope you have a great day in Tucson, too. I'm in Los Angeles and the weather is manure all day long...LOL
Thanks Sobaire!! I recall the mine you visited at Big Horn Mine...you're braver the we are for sure, though we'll likely be visiting that mine in the future.
I live in Ridgecrest and have work on the Randsburg site as an archaeologists. Unfortunately, yesterday, Sept 7 2022, that the General Store in the town is going close up for good due to the owner raising the rent.
Thanks for watching our video and for updating us on the General Store closing down. What a major shame, and all because the owner needs more cash. Randsburg without a General Store is one step closer to becoming a real ghost town.
@ 5:38 - While it may have been re-purposed for mining work , that piece of apparatus was originally designed as a MANURE SPREADER for Farming . ---- < Doc , Retired , Miner / Mine Owner - Operator for over 50 years > .
Thanks for that update, DesertRat. You are the second person to tell us what that old rusty piece of quipment was used for. Who would have thunk...a poop spreader. Definitely a manure spreader. Before tractors, the operator would ride on the seat to both drive the horses and operate the levers of the spreader. One lever would operate the drag chain to move the manure back to the broadcaster, and the other lever would operate the broadcaster. Later on, modifications were made so they could be pulled by a tractor. As a youngster, I sat on the seat operating the levers.
In my last visit to Randsburg, I cannot say that I noticed a place called White Saloon. Chances are it has closed, and probably long time ago there’s a bar called The Joint, but that’s all I know for sure.

👍The drilled holes are for sticks of dynamite. The hills around Randsberg are full of mine shafts and adits... some unregistered. Be very careful.

It's a manure spreader my grandfather had one just about like that, on his farm in Iowa
Thanks, Robert! Imagine that...a shit spreader. Yikes, and then we eat what grows out of it. 😆
