so the reason fervent champion only kills the single 1/1 with Torbran out is because he doesn't become a 3/1, he had a replacement effect on his damage. champion has 1 point of damage to assign, and that becomes 3 damage when doing the math. if you had a 2/1, it could assign one damage to each 1/1 blocker, and then hit each one for 3. I think opponent could block with multiple x/3's and you could still kill more than 1 with say a 2/1 champion plus Torbran
Just the meme of the title made me laugh. Thank you for consistently making good content, with wholesome commentary, and helpful explanations of decisions
I've played cavalcade/Anax/Torbran/Embercleave hybrid version during metagame challenge, and it worked very well for me (I got 73% winrate over roughly 30 games, including one 7 win run), so you might look into this. Basically, it only played 2x cleave and no phoenixes, but instead focused on 1 drops and cavalcade to work with Anax and Torbran and enable cheap cleave for Anax. Only played 3 Bonecrushers as well, since it's way too slow.
Preach it brother! I fucking hate the ranked games right now. Everyone and their grandma from gold to diamond is using mono White devotion decks or their close cousing White/Black lifegain decks and is so boring to go toe to toe against them all the time.
It may looks strange to say, but I felt this deck has better performance in Bo3. To lower the curve I would put the Phoenix in the sideboard. They are good but a 2/2 for 3 is too slow, even as a flyer. They are obviously most important against control decks. Moving also an Anax in the sideboard you have 4 slot for Tin Street Dodger which are pretty good. And they work very well together with Robbeer of The Rich, which is a card I like a lot both in aggro and controm matchup, far more than the Reverelers. I found this deck less straightforward than expected. It's true that the half of the times you close the game in 4 turns, but many matches are very very subtle. The meta is quite good for this deck but it needs to be piloted well.
Just FYI, 2 1/1s would have been enough to kill the fervant champion with torbran. Torbran does not make the fervant champion deal 3 first strike damage, it still deals only one and everyone who is deal damage gets 2 extra. Therefore it would have only dealt it's 1 to the first 1/1 and then increased it and then the second one would have killed him during normal damage. Not that it would have been important here, but you explicitly called out "and 4 will do it" which made me think about this special case most people get wrong.
im convinced to craft this deck now. was so hesitant bc im pretty annoyed straight up burn doesnt work anymore. im that scumbag who needs it to be all burn all the time
I use thrills of possibility in lieu of the Rix Maadi's. It's been more helpful than most would probably imagine. Especially when you can bin your Phoenix for a turn 4 escape if need be.
what do you think about replace the fenix with Tectonic Giant?, the Tectonic Giant made 3 damage before attack, and when is target too, with Torbran add 2
As a dedicated red mage I enjoy your videos a lot. I can only afford Mono red but I love listening to the control thought process to better understand it. I almost always play aggro or combo.
CovertGoBlue I am currently trying to craft a budget doom foretold black white deck. So I guess your control tendencies have rubbed off just a little bit. Lol
I've got robber of the rich in the Rix Reveler spot. I might switch things around and give this a shot. When Robber only hits counterspells it's le sad time.
At 27:45 the fervent champion only killed 1 of the 1/1s even though it has first strike and torbran was in play. Is that a bug? Shouldn't it have killed 3 1/1s?
Well, Torbran does say: Whenever a red source deals damage, it does that much damage plus 2, right? So the fervent knight only gets in 3 damage on the first blocker (1 from first strike + 2 from Torbran), then it doesn't do anymore damage, so the Torbran buff is turned off. I'm still new to the game but isnt that how first strike and dealing damage on combat works?
@@dartholiver Yeah it's a weirdly specific sort of Red effect but you're right on the nose with it. Torbran doesn't boost power, he just adds an extra 2 damage to any red source, so the Fervent Champion still only has 1 power - and thus only hits one of the 1/1s before it's "finished attacking"
I enjoy red decks only after I've been rolled so many times i just need a win to feel I can keep fighting. Or when I just have no time and need a few more wins for the day.
Red was ever like that, i our playgroup nobody plays red aggro. Because well ...but overall the new stuff is all 3 mana questing beast and stuff... Thats why we only play commander, draft or extendent 30 life casual.
It was a mono red deck video that I first watched that got me watching your channel and back to playing magic again last night I won FNM with my version of your simic ramp deck from Sunday thanks
I come to your videos for your content not your intros my friend! Some people just wanna complain. I say whenever you feel like innovating go for it baby
Yeah I think the phoenix is a must for red (not that it's game changing like the dwarf or the sword...) The one drops in red are rather lack luster (which is... weird... red should have good cheap things), and this isn't a cavalcade deck, so it's no use playing them. I think the new set didn't do much good for red aggro... maybe there is a strange brew with the sagas but they seem BAD
When the final reward is "Price of Betrayal" as he finishes his mono red rampage.
at 16:30, if you play Torbran, first strike from the Fervent Champion allows you to get rid of the Paragon and would have left you with a field.
Henceforth, you will be known as CGB, The Betrayer.

@@LazyBastard69 way to expensive
16:00 if you play Torbran, the Fervent Champion will kill the Blacklance during First Strike thanks to Torbran so you only trade half your board.
Watching CBG enjoy himself despite himself with a red aggro deck was hilarious, and it's the kind of thing that keeps this red mage coning back :p
I've seen this deck so many times in the last few days. Anax, the Phoenix and Embercleave are doing so much work.
so the reason fervent champion only kills the single 1/1 with Torbran out is because he doesn't become a 3/1, he had a replacement effect on his damage. champion has 1 point of damage to assign, and that becomes 3 damage when doing the math. if you had a 2/1, it could assign one damage to each 1/1 blocker, and then hit each one for 3. Well put
I don't have 4 Embercleaves so I run a couple Shadowspears. It is something I can play early and equips for free on Fervent.
I hate control, this was so satisfying!
Every time I see CGB put out a mono-red video I expect to tune in to find him sporting a goatee...
LOL I laughed at the "did you have fun this match?" so hard to choose for CGB. red happy? or blue sad? hahaha
Like it was scripted....
When the state of the world has me utterly depressed, this is where I come for solace. Thank you CGB.

In this God-awful 20 minutes per game, 60 mana available meta, I hope mono red wins on turn 4 every game. And I hate mono red.

Respect. There is no proper aggro anymore. Shades of it now. A turn 7 kill is quick
@@MrKongatthegates what are you talking about? Monored and white weenie are running rampant right now. I literally face monored every 3rd game
My god, he even clicked the happy red dude.... I'm going to be sick.
Tenacious D reference @ 4:45. Very nice.
Rock the new cut!! I promise you look better than you think man. I recently cut mine, went from 9 inches to 1.5. Just rock it and it will look good!
Congrats on winning Merchants BRAWLHALL CGB! Love the "Deal with it"-Shades, the Good Game-ending with Brazing Borrower-closer!

If you’re playing mono red, what possible advantage is playing shock lands? Do you need the black mana?
I can hear the opponents screaming and slamming their desks
As a hater of Control...this was a satisfying to watch especially since CGB won that last Brawl Hall with Control.
Mmm tenacious D. I knew you were a man of class
im convinced to craft this deck now. was so hesitant bc im pretty annoyed straight up burn doesnt work anymore. im that scumbag who needs it to be all burn all the time

Damn I sure do love this content from CovertGoRed.
Haha nice to see this after you played Azorius control in Brawl Hall. I hate playing into control but you definitely played it super well, ggwp
Theros beyond death turned out to be much stronger set than I expected. I have a lot of fun with MTGA right now! I hope you also do! 😀
That tenacious D reference though...
Glad I'm not the only one who caught that.

They say Hi Ho Silver, away in the book as well.

CGB secretly loves mono red.
You were the chosen one! It was said that you would destroy the red decks, not join them!
You should throw in an experimental frenzy or 2 for longer games. :-)
Hey man really enjoyed this one keep up the good work!
Reasons aggro is better than control : You can play more than a game per hour ! Still hate monored aggro tho

I need to find a way to counter this deck. But I think I know what cards to get rid of with my trusty unmoored ego.
