One time I was listening to Skid Row on my discman on the bus and Livin' on a Chain Gang was what I was listening to.. and a really annoying preppy girl asked me what song I was listening to...at first I was shaken that she actually talked to me because she always gossips to her gaggle of friends about me being a devil worshipper (which I'm not) so I said Livin on a Chain Gang and she said "Omgee, that is like totally not a song, you're talking about the Chainsmokers which are like soo hawt" and I ALMOST punched her in the nose, but this snitch Joni was in the seat behind us and I could land a spot in the principal's office for the 6th time that month

    Bad music, for me, is music that is insincere. If the person doesn't love what they're doing and that isn't the REAL number one reason for them doing it then it's bad. I don't consider musical ability to be important without sincerity. Sincere musicians who aren't technical win over great technical players with no soul.
    Also there are always exceptions.

    • @Jaspertine
      @Jaspertine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I "mostly" feel the same way, but I know for a fact there are insincere songs I love, and songs I hate specifically for being "too sincere," if you know what I mean. Sometimes it's just all in the details.

    • @erlineandrews
      @erlineandrews 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      How do you gauge sincerity? It seems to me you'd have to assume you know what's going on in the artist's head. I don't assume artists are sincere - if by sincere you mean genuine. I assume they're all performing/putting on an act.

    • @arcanics1971
      @arcanics1971 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course I have to assume, you are absolutely right. If they're singing 12 different love songs about differing situations but they're twelve or they're singing about divorce without being married though then that's a big clue that they're not writing from-ahem!- the heart.
      Mostly I mean their motivations or at least what they seem to me to be. If it seems, and yes I will be assuming here, that they are in it for fame and fortune then I will find myself not liking the music even if it's technically brilliant (Mylene Klass, anyone?) but if I feel they love what they do and would do it regardless of remuneration and credit then I will find myself liking it, more often than not.
      Obviously, I am going to be wrong a lot of the time and it's a bit of a pretentious way to go about judging things but it is what I do. Assumption and all.

      Or if they're being fake, playing a charecter and acting as if it's their real self, or if the music flat out has no soul.
      Wether it be if the music is made using an algorithm, autotune is unironically used, or simply if the artist lacks any artistic ability or is a hack.
      Sometimes I get put off by an artist if they think too highly of themselves or think that they're a genius.

      I feel like a lot of people don't understand the artistic value in "mumble rap", because they aren't analyzing the correct elements of the music itself. Let's take Playboi Carti's Die Lit for example. Lyrically, it's nothing new, but the music itself is very great. The production is almost psychedelic, and very repetitive. The way Carti uses not only his voice but his mouth as an instrument is amazing. His adlibs are almost like the percussion of the music. Great album, would recommend.

  • @MrSquibbins
    @MrSquibbins 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    So I thought about this a little more... I think that you can generally say that any music (or actually any artform) that you consider "bad" has at least one of these qualities:
    -bad performance
    -lack of authenticity
    -lifelessness/ emotionlessness
    -nothing interesting about it
    Of course any one of these doesn't necessarily ruin a piece. A bad performance of something really interesting and authentic can still be very good because of its artistic value. A good performance can sometimes save a boring piece but that is usually because the performer adds life, authenticity or interesting elements where there originally were none.
    Different people's tastes are different of course, so what I think is ruined because I consider it unauthentic might still be appreciated by others for the way it is performed. But if a piece of music meets all of these criteria, people will probably agree that it sucks.
    I think that this is a pretty consistent way of explaining what is wrong with anything that you think is "bad music" ;)
    What do you think?

    I used to jam with a drummer who had an extremely well developed "arsenal" of moves he could pull off. Unfortunately, he could never just listen the song as a whole. All the while, [the industry barons] brainwashing the masses into believing their music is the "best" by borderline-coercive advertisement means of: bandwagon, association, repetition, and an entire facade of both "expert" and seemingly "democratized" justification as per venues like; American Idol, The Grammy Awards, The "People's Choice" Awards,, The Billboard Awards, The Voice, and most action-packed Hollywood blockbuster movies that make a billion dollars at the box office, and no one remembers next year or any other year for that matter.
    That's my biggest pet peeve. =o(

    This is what I say all the time... When people ask me what I listen to my answer is always: "good music."... And I mean it! I'm a bassist and I can play drums and guitar, too... I'm not good at guitar and drums, though but I consider myself a good musician and I can tell when a song is interesting and unique enough to be called good... And I'm definitely able to identify lazy songwriting!
    Now I listen to a lot of japanese music. I don't care if it's metal, rock, funk or even reggae/ska, as long as it sounds interesting and well composed. The reason why I like japanese music is, because they really love fancy basslines. I also listen to the group Morning Musume that has a lot of great disco funk songs but also EDM stuff. And I couldn't care less what other people might say about "pop music" because there is no such genre as "pop"... It simply means that it is popular music that is played on the radio. But the music itself is very special, well written and awesome. Just listen to the bassline of "utakata saturday night" and you know what I mean.
    Same goes to Katy Perry's songs. I don't know who her songwriter is but he (or she) is doing a hell of a job. You can like it or not but you have to aknowledge the almost perfect compositions. And just because I can tell, when a song is good doesn't mean, that I'm a fan of it. Some songs are well written but I simply don't like one aspect of it... The voice, the used instruments, samples or whatever. Taste in music is subjective and we all should be more open to new things and we should definitely be more tolerant...

    There's good music, then there's bad music, which is all matter of taste from the perspective of of a person. After that then comes the ugly music. That one is the kind that doesn't want to reach out and move people hearts, mind and souls. It's just there to make money, sadly lately theres more grow in that aspect i think.

    We live in the world of the internet, but at the same time it is more difficult to find the new artists in the genres you like because the ways of getting the information are, even if plentiful, narrow. You don't accidentally find new artists like you might with Tv blasting music while vacuuming. You have to start and search them on purpose and that prevents even big names in their genre becoming household names that everyone might know. Of course they would be ignored by the so called true or hard core fans as sell outs. So imo in a way, finding new artists and music is only seemingly easier.

    1) Lacking skill/style doesnt fit: Limp Bizkit vocalist "shredding" the guitar
    2) Not serving the song: Kerry King and Kirk Whammett doing their signature moves all the time without serving the song (widdly-widdly-wah! and wah's respectfully; dont get me wrong, I like them, but they dont serve the song most of the time when they do this)
    3) Poor writing: Nickelback ("look at this 'graph"; which is a shame because he the vocalist doesnt have a bad voice as seen in Santana's Into the Night)
    4) Misrepresentation of the song: playing any rebellious punk song but being pro-establishment and etc.

    I appreciate the packaging of a song, or the way the song is presented to its audience. Everything from the title to the cover of the single/album contribute. When we move to albums, overall packaging and presentation is especially important. Arrangement of songs as well as topics, themes, and tones and occasionally story telling mean a whole lot. Alongside that, I do enjoy when the cover and title of that album correlate to the content. I am a sucker for a good album cover. Visual art to accompany the auditory art.

    My biggest musical pet peeve is when a band sounds like a bunch of blatant amateurs. I've heard some great bands with tiny followings, such as Pulse, Lustravi, Mortichnia, and Recreated. What sets these apart from wannabes who will never get fans is that they each have intelligent approaches to songwriting, and they churn out music that might not be perfectly unique yet still sounds fresh and inspired. When I think of amateur bands, I think of ones that listen to a heavy band that has lots of screaming, distortion, and breakdowns, and they think, "Oh, we can do that!" As a result, they throw away all of the nuance that their inspirations had and just write very generic post-hardcore, metalcore, deathcore, death metal, emo, screamo, etc. It sounds heavy and has plenty of screams and breakdowns, yet none of it matters because it lacks substance.

In no way am I disrespecting anyone who is proficient in their craft, what I'm trying to say is that you've got to get emotionally invested in what you're playing. You could learn or write a song and get it done note for note, lick for lick and there won't be a thing wrong with it, but if there's no emotional context behind it then it sounds like an experiment done in very sterile conditions. Personally, I'd rather hear a song where they may be a few bung notes that you can hear emotion dripping out of the performer, it makes music sound raw and real.

    The Ringo love in this makes me happy. He was (and is!) an excellent drummer who knew exactly how to serve the song and I'd rather hear someone say that they were going after his drumming style than, say, someone really technical like Mike Portnoy or Neil Peart. He's not a bad singer either honestly.

    Heaviness for the sake of heaviness. This includes the dreaded death grunt. I feel like a lot of hardcore metal bands out there substitute melodic vocals with the death grunt for lack of vocal skill or lyric writing. Not saying grunting is bad. Bands like in flames and bodom do it well because they have melody in their riffs that a lot of hardcore bands fail to comprehend and exaggerate on the heaviness cause they think making their music incomprehensible saves them from incompetence

    Huge pet peeve for me is when a song or a piece is incoherent, also known as when the composers try to stand out without actually knowing where they are going with it. That happens a lot in pieces that try to use different genres in different sections or at the same time... Also when you can hear a specific sound or rift in a piece where is just doesn't fit... at all...

    During the video, I kept thinking, yeah, that's Kanye West, over and over again. Butchered Bohemian Rhapsody, ripped off Ray Charles and King Crimson. I straight up dislike all that he stands for. Nothing he ever did, musically or otherwise, ever tempted me to listen to any of his productions other than those that were shoved down my ears, anyway. So I might not be qualified to call his music bad due to lack of knowledge about the subject matter, but to me, that guy represents everything that is wrong with music today.
    As other comments already mentioned, it all comes down to how genuine something is. And I think that is a very tricky subject. I think it depends on how much authnticity the author of a song claims to have. If that's not convincing, the whole performance crumbles, which makes a song pretentious, but no necessarily bad. In this case, I think, you would have to see the performer and the song as two different things. Just because the author/performer does a bad job at delivering the song, it doesn't necessarily mean the song itself is bad. I could go on and on with pros and cons, but, as I said, I think it's a difficult subject worth discussing.

    • @denisberardi7877
      @denisberardi7877 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's not really a fair assessment of Kanye's work. Admittedly, the Bohemian Rhapsody thing was a bit of a mess but tons of his music is genuine, and it's absurd to say that sampling is the same as ripping off. Even if it was, that King Crimson sample is like two seconds long and only plays 3 times in the 5 minute track anyhow.

      Sampling isn't "ripping off". Please attempt to immerse yourself in the history of hip hop and what the genre stands for. Approaching the genre as one approaches metal and rock isn't how you should be going about this.

    I say you hit the major points, but I'll add two more of my "peeves".
    Timbre: Many musicians can play well, but haven't tuned into what sound lends itself to their playing style, or have a disregard for what playing style timbres are evocative of.
    Phrasing/timing: Speaks for itself, but a major thing I notice many musicians overlooking.
    There are those who play their instrument, and those that play the song. Ringo being the example you gave of the latter.

  • @Guitarlife17
    @Guitarlife17 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    To be honest man, my musical pet peeve is when somebody generalizes a genre without giving all of it in its entirety a chance. Like you said, musical maturity.
    The fan base of some bands is definitely worse than the band also. Like for example, people who follow bands not for the music but for the image, like, slipnot or ICP or metallica. Slipnot may have a couple interesting riffs but it doesn't sound appealing to me and the fan base is trying to hard to be scary. ICP just pain sucks in every aspect. Every single aspect. And even though Metallica used to stand for something, they don't anymore and anybody with a pair of sunglasses and a shirt with flames on it will tell you they like Metallica to see edgy and cool, when it's just a fad.
    Music is the language of the soul. It is what drives you and moves you. It soothes you and helps you express emotion that you may have difficulty facing.
    I guess what I'm saying is, there are bad bands, and bands can have bad intentions, but most of the time, people who don't completely understand music listen to it for the wrong reasons, thus creating a bad fan base and turning me off to the genre.
    Country
    (except johnny cash and soul bluegrass)
    Rap
    (except those who rap to express their strong emotions and try to get a message across instead of simply doing it for the money and women or trying to look cool)

    There's no difference (or rather SHOULD be no difference) between "it's good/bad" and "I liked it/I didn't like it." They're the same thing. Hear me out. An opinion on art is entirely subjective however you phrase it. If you "liked" something then it's "good" to you. If you didn't, it's bad. A statement like "it's good but I just don't like it" is contradictory and disingenuous. If you didn't like it, it's bad. It's bad TO YOU. Saying something is good but you don't like it is the coward's way of expressing your opinion without being controversial. It's thinking of the popular opinion as the "right" one. Stop looking for objectivity. This is art. It's totally and purely subjective. There's no such thing as objectively good or objectively bad. It's all in the eye of the beholder. If you don't like something, there's a REASON you don't like it. Express that reason, explain why it's bad, and stand behind it.

    My musical pet peeve is basically any musician who does a disservice to a song by adding unnecessary shred licks, drum fills, high-pitched vocals or equivalent. A musician's job, amateur or professional, is to serve the song he or she is performing or singing and not to show off to the audience how 'amazing' his or her skills are. When the likes of Randy Rhoads, Ritchie Blackmore, Al Di Meola, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai shred on their songs, they do so to serve the music, and those tunes and the styles in which they do so would not have worked without those tough licks. Even if what you are playing is something as simple as a 4-chord James Arthur song, you are not supposed to overplay if it distracts the listener from the music instead of adding to it. Good technique does not mean much if it does not add to what you are doing musically - technique for the music, not music for the technique.
    P.S. I like all genres of music from pop and R&B to rock and metal - I believe that there is something we all can learn from every style of music. The only genre I cannot stand is crunkcore.

      Actually, I have an impression that he couldn't hold on a theme for more than four verses. He had some brilliant lines here and there, but nearly all of his lyrics were butchered towards the end. However, his will was really well written and heartfelt. I guess that both lyricwise and compositionwise he was lazy author to some extend, but that might also be a homage to groups like Flipper, and certainly is part of what made him such an icon. And, believe me, as someone who attempts at being an experimental artist of sorts, I can clearly see showing off behind his "not showing off" attitude. Been there, done that. Albeit, of course, in front of 20-30 people.

  • @sprszrbr2471

    I sat down watching and I was like "wow what a topic, how would he ever solve this in a 4 minutes video". Then I woke up on Coltrane's Giants Steps (sick dynamic harmony, what a tune, a great analogy) and I realised it's not that easy. The points you made are valid if not sound yet it has been discussed by lots in books over the years and there was never a single, coherent conclusion, rather sets of things, a... a list! That's what this video is.
    A list of points for a good music, and a few counter-points, against bad music. It's basically telling people what to do. What I think, sometimes we forget that the whole 'art' things has strong connections with service industry, where artists serve other people making their lives more entertaining. Even the word 'art' might be related to something... artificial... maybe? Something made for us to be better? But I digress - back to the list. So if the "bad" (by means of some set of rules [a list]) tune gets a lot of attention, it might be ok to conclude that it serves well, doesn't it?
    Soooo.. Ultimately, popular = good?
    Again, no, it's not that easy. The whole problem occurs when you can record something and play it again, and again, and again... Until it's yours, really. When music is non existent, as Ingarden points out in some of his essays, it just might be a whole different experience, repating something, even if it's Pulse live, is gonna fade away in time.
    But if it's some crazy death metal band playing in the distance and you are lying down in the tent thinking about aliens setting an invasion evaporating people with sound - that death metal band gave you an inspiration for thought - and it is valuable cause it gave birth to the memory, a pleasant one, the one you tell your friends with passion, even if in the core, it's not that interesting.
    TL:DR it is not that easy
