Way of the Warrior - Eskrima, the Philippino Way [4/4]

Part of a eight part series documentary on the Martial Arts of south and south east Asia, originally broadcast on the BBC in the early 1980s. This episode follows the very old, yet ever developing, Philippino martial art, Eskrima. It has developed, largely, due to the use of knives in the Philippines and teaches one how to defend against and use knives or small blades. Part 4 of 4 parts.

I think the greatest thing about Escrima / Kali and up to modern Arnis is the amazing adaptability of The Phillipino style. they lookes at the chinese and japanese styles and even when the spanish arrived. the development and the whole idea of "Ok that worked better than my way, can i use it?" has made for a wonderful style. it is wonderful to see the variety of escrima. the long range, close range disarming. it is simple and as such wonderfully adaptive. i always loved it.

Well, Doce Pares is the most public. It's centered in Cebu City (which is pretty public,) it has the most visible practitioners, and it's generally "established" rather than underground. Also, this was set in the '80s, during the Marcos years. I go to school in LA and there are plenty of other schools - a lot of my homies study Decampo.
Check out History Channel's "Human Weapon" and Discovery Channel's "Fight Quest" - they take in non-Doce Pares and non-Cebu schools.

its true but with bbc sometimes its about the timing of the event and they just happened to do most of there research on doce pares.

Why is it that its only Doce Pares? There are other eskrima styles that are also good and perhaps better. And also other master that were as good as Cacoy. Like for say Anciong Bacon, Timoteo Maranga, Alberto Dacayana SR, Ondo Caburnay. Other styles that are as prominent as Doce Pares is Balintawak, Lapunti, Mig-Sune-Do.

Like any martial art it has become formalized and the ART has started to surpass the MARTIAL. Once the need to use it in actual combat wanes, things like forms and patterns begin taking over. Before you know it the original meaning and application aspect is lost. They become useless drills that look impressive but don't function. To see this stuff stripped back down and used in action look up Dog Brothers. But we warned that it doesn't look nearly as flowery, but it does function.
