@@imprxvised8219 I think the majority of people that had both consoles definitely bought a 360 first as it came out a year earlier, was way cheaper and Halo 3 came out before any of PS3's biggest exclusives, quite early in the gen in September 2007. PS3 hadn't even been out a year then. Both consoles had their pros ands cons and it was a damn good fight. Anyway you could argue Wii won that gen as it outsold both the others. Speaking of exclusives what do you think of Xbox possibly having Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein and others as exclusives next gen? They just acquired Bethesda for $7.5 billion. That could give Xbox a shot at having a better exclusive line up next gen.
PS3 did lose the 7th generation, they only outsold the Xbox 360 by a couple of mill units because they were on sale for over 2 years longer 😂. Microsoft stopped counting systems sold around 2015 while Sony stopped in 2017. When the Xbox One and PS4 actually went on retail, the Xbox 360 had 19m more units sold than the PlayStation 3 😂.
😂🤣 Absolutely love my PS3 slim but this is pure copium. Someone making the last shot of a basketball that’s already over doesn’t mean you “won” & Xbox 360 being the lead platform for every 3rd party from day one until the end is the objective evidence to that. PS3 only outsold 360 well after the next generation started while still receiving short end of the stick on the last cross gen games. Sony handhelds are my jam but anyone who claims any industry wins for that generation is as patently false is at gets. Tech nerds aren’t everywhere so I get it. The false narrative of PS3 technical prowess somehow clung to the zeitgeist throughout even tho on all fronts aside Blu-Ray 360 had a near generational advantage over PS3 specs. No unified shaders, split memory pool, inadequate SDKs, a GPU outdated/underpowered by 2005 standards & combined with a complex slow amalgamation of vector processing a top regular CPU work at center. PS3 is/was an incredible system with a lot to offer, exclusive titles made it SIIIIING. IMO artist aptitude brought those to be equal with technically superior showcases for 360. TLoU/Killzone 2 are as striking as Halo 4/Gears 3 without using techniques that would become next gen standard. Lotta if it comes to the difference in games made between those two & Sony having the objective of salvaging the false narrative of spec superiority. Which obviously succeeded, unfortunately resulting in lower resolution, fps & visual targets that were “okay” 2009-2012. TBH it was TLoU that did it, it did it for me & still love the PS3 purchased for it.
Although the Playstation 3 sold a little more than the Xbox 360 (Much because of the price reduction at the end of the generation), I still consider the Xbox 360 the real winner of that generation, simply because the Xbox 360 made more money than the PS3 , in terms of game sales, the Xbox 360 is the third most successful video game of all time, with a billion games sold, only losing to to the PS4 (first) and PS2 (second), both of which have sold over a billion and a half games, and both Sony and Microsoft lose money selling consoles, and make money selling games, so the most successful of the two consoles, although the lead in sales for the PS3, is the Xbox 360.
Bruh PS3’s price was better long term than 360. Rechargeable controllers, free online multiplayer , built-in WiFi, region free, real world online currency, Blu-Ray player, didn’t lock half the functionality of the console behind a paywall, HDMI port out of the gate, hardware that didn’t have a high failure rate $600 may look steep but Microsoft nickel and dimed its consumers so much that they hard you paying more than you would get out of the box on PS3 in the long term
Friendly old piece of a popped purple balloon the Xbox 360 had rechargeable batteries SOLD SEPARATELY as well as the charging kits too. Microsoft had apps like Netflix, TH-cam, Internet Explorer, Facebook etc all locked behind the Xbox Live Gold paywall until early 2014.
You said that the PlayStation 4 announcement didn't talk about new tech very much. But I think you forgot about Gaikai. Sony talked about it quite a lot when they revealed the PlayStation 4. It was this streaming video company they bought so that they could basically stream games to the PlayStation 4 many years before Google Stadia existed.
I also didn't buy a PS3 until the slim PS3 came out. Around then, the price of the console was just right and there was enough games for me to warrant buying the PS3. With the PS4, I bought it about a year after it launched. I hope that with the PS5, they launch it with a more consumer-friendly MSRP and has lots of exclusives and multi-platform games at or close to launch.
PS5 is looking to be the most expensive PlayStation system yet. I doubt it will be "a more consumer-friendly MSRP." It was probably be around the PS3 launch price, if not a tad higher. They have said in interviews they focusing on "value" over "price" -- whatever that means, lol. Them saying they're not focused on "price" makes it sound like the price is going to be high, but they're going to try to convince you it's so good that it's still worth the "value."
I bet not many of you remember that the PS1 was actually going to be a Nintendo CD system (Project Reality) , but Nintendo being Nintendo, fudged up the negotiations and the PS1 was born, which proceeded to kick Nintendo's ass... (Nintendo later released what was going to be Project Reality as the Nintendo 64)
Total sales doesn't indicate the winner of the console generation Microsoft made way more money than Sony did Sony infact lost a shit tone of money from the ps3 and the ramifications of that are still being felt by Sony to this day Also PS3 only past 360 in sales extremely late in the generation makeing those later sales mostly irrelevant
Yup, 360 was still ahead the vast majority of that generation. PS3 just managed to barely pass it in overall global sales at the very end, but that didn't make up for all the money lost/not gained previously when you take everything into account, like you pointed out. A lot of people miss this part of the context of the situation.
it didn't almost lose it, it lost the second it came out. The xbox 360 had better framerate better graphics better menu options better ui better when hacked, the only thing ps3 had going for itself was that online was free and later on it was easy to jailbreak
I heard that someone say 60GB yellow pigment due to a manufacturing defect in the device. Give me your opinion and I hope that you will only come to me 60GB angel
The PS4 had a rocky launch too but it turned out to be the best selling console of the generation. However, it looks like the PS5 will have a decent launch with Spider Man Miles Morales and a great first year with Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and Sackboy. I mean hell, the PS5 is coming with Astros Playroom built in and it looks like a pretty solid platformer. So I'm thinking Sony had a two strikes and a home run situation.
Consider the fact that the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market despite being at $600 people don't think of that the Blu-ray players were going for $1,000 in 2006 while the PS3 was selling for $600
Have Microsoft ever won a console war? No, seriously. Xbox was more powerful than ps2 but ps2 still won. Had better exclusives, better games. Currently Microsoft have a huge following and fan loyalty for one reason…..the head start they had on the HD era with the 360 being out a year before the ps3 and Sony having to play catch up. By the end of that gen Sony still over took like the tortoise in the tortoise and the Hare story. PS4 dominated Xbox one last gen even with the mighty Xbox one x(which I own by the way along side my PS4 pro) Sony dominates the market with its AAA titles and always will. Microsoft can make more powerful consoles but that has never won them console wars, they haven’t even won battles within the console wars. For every Halo there is an Uncharted, GOW, HZD and Ghost of Tsushima. AAA games released in quick succession whilst Microsoft may drop one AAA exclusive every once in a blue moon, milking franchises and riding of their previous success.
No xbox had never "won" a console generation, nor has xbox ever made any profit on their consoles since its inception in 2001. Furthermore during the 8th gen, xbox gamers were not buying enough games, thus the creation of Gamepass as a plan b due to low sales. If xbox was not connected Microsoft it would for sure have disappeared by the middle of the xbone gen.
PS3 is a perfect proof that you can make a comeback after a rocky start and win, something Microsoft failed to to achieve with Xbox One and fanboys keeps defending them. Just admit it guys. Sony's position with PS3 was a lot worse than Microsoft this gen and they managed to do it.
Everyone might say the ps3 is better, but we all know that the ps3/360 gen the Xbox had better exclusives, better controllers and a cheaper console overall more user friendly (except the red ring of death)
Uh, they almost did actually. At a time where the whole corporation of Sony was hemorrhaging money and having to sell off multiple branches. PS3 came out on top at the very end of that generation, but no one, not even Sony was sure was going to happen.
By the end of the generation, around 2010-2011 I know a lot of my friends either bought PS3’s after their 360’s, or their 360’s died because of RROD and they switched to PS3 because of games like Uncharted and The Last of Us.
Lol 360 dominated, no it didn't. Wii dominated everything the first half of that gen (of course it counts, it sold the most units last gen). The second half of last gen PS3 was outselling 360 every year. 360 launched first (by a whole year) and finished last in sales.
1.) They lost against te Wii! 101,63 million vs 87,4 million 2.) We never got official numbers from the Xbox 360! We just know that in June 2014 they surpassed 84 million units sold through! We don't know exactly what was after that. According to vg charts the Xbox 360 sold more than a billion (1.008 BN.) physically alone! PS3 sold 999,6 million all together (physical AND digital) according to Sonys own documents. Yes they lost the war. They won software against the Wii and DS they lost to Xbox 360 in software and they lost to Wii in hardware!
@@d9zirable So we should not care about the winner just becaues Sony was not Nr.1? I know which resort comes to this: Wii doesn't count because of this or that (and PC doesn't count either, but is easier to ignore as it is not as well covered by market research). Let me say here: humans are the fastest animal on earth. Naturally excluding all the 4-legged animals, because that isn't the same, right? And also excluding all flying animals, because running is the only true mode of transportation. Oh wait, let us exclude all animals with wings if we are at it, otherwise ostriches would beat us as well. But if we exclude all these on very reasonable grounds, it is completely undeniable that humans are the king in being the fastest animal.
As a kid you get suckered in thinking it's an actual war to fight sides with. Then you get a little older and think calling it a war is silly and there's no need to spar. Then you realise corporate fighting leads to better deals for the consumer.
“PS3’s disastrous launch” Xbox 360 sold 1.5 million in 2005 while being cheaper, being in more territories worldwide by the end of that year and having less competition PlayStation 3 sold 1.84 million in 2006 while being more expensive, only being available in Japan and North America by the end of that year, releasing alongside another new console and having more competition X360 had a worse launch yet people rarely bring up this fact
they had less xbox 360 units because alot of them were defective between August and October of 2005. they had thousands of dead 360's all piled up in the factory. That's why it was hard to get a 360, The RROD was a thing before the Launch day. hell some people who had brought new 360's had the RROD on launch day. Sony just didn't mfg. enough consoles for the the demand but sold more in the 2 countries.
To this day I don’t understand how the 360 is deemed better than than the ps3 as a broke child free online was key to my entertainment and the 360 cab wqs so ugly
Let me summary the video for you: Sony's PS3 had a lot of problem, but sony learnt from its mistakes and finally with making up those mistakes and having great exclusives was able to outsell Xbox 360, but still lost to nintendo's Wii.
A lot of Xbox fans stopped paying attention to the seventh generation's war after about 2008ish, and so they missed out on the reality of what happened.

Microsoft started pushing the Kinect stuff mid generation and Sony invested heavily on exclusives. From Sony we got The Last of Us and from Microsoft we got Star Wars Kinect. Yeah.
I played my Xbox for multiplayer and played my PS3 for Single player and Japanese games. I loved both. I had to replace both consoles. Red Ring of Death so replaced it for a first launch shiny 360 with chrome trim and the Original PS4 started to act up so I had to get a PS3 slim. But my ps3 library out grew my 360 library because of the Japanese games and exclusives. Xbox 360 > Xbox One All my Xbox friends moved to PS4 because of the Xbox One. Halo and Gears story ended on the 360 to us because it ended so well for one and not so well for the other.
Total bs if you take into account how much people bought a new Xbox because of the rrod. The units sold did not reflect the playerbase. This gen proved that. Thats why they are really giving and progressive now. Its the only leg they can stand on besides the regular suspects game wise, until their new accuired studio's produce hits on a regular basis.
The Volcanic Masochist The Volcanic Masochist Okay, so I was a major Sony fan in the Ps1 and Ps2 eras. I’m sorry but the PS3 sorely lagged behind with quality exclusives. Mass Effect 1, Halos 1CE and 3 and 4 + Reach/ODST/Halo Wars, Gears 1-3, Lost Odyssey, Forza Horizon, Fable Anniversary and Fable II, Saints Row, Witcher 2, and many others helped differentiate the Xbox that generation. Not to mention Sony more or less killed Ratchet and Clank and Gran Turismo (two of my fav IP’s from them). Uncharted is good as is Last of Us but they are more interactive movies than games (it’s universal that the gameplay for those games are *serviceable*)

Back then my deciding factor that I choosed the PS3 was because of the Xbox's "3 rings of death".
The wii kicked everyones ass
Wii was lucky thats why Wiiu and nintendo Switch didn't even stand
And sony made big mistake with ps3
Remember ps2 and game cube
@@teluguanimesensei245 the ps2 sold well because it was the cheapest dvd player. The switch is selling well so.
Anyways, even with a rough start the PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide.
@Sean Taylor No they didn't they won, only just, but still a win.
@@ashleythomas4112 yeah ps3 still definitely outsold, but then almost half of the people who had ps3 then bought a 360 for halo 3. And then went back once reach dropped and stayed on playstation. Do I blame them? No. Playstation is fucking amazing and so is xbox. I'm really looking forward to getting both the ps5 and series x. I'm more than likely getting the xbox first, but I'm still getting the ps5 simply because the exclusives are better.
From the comments, it looks like a lot of Xbox fans don't know what really happened in the seventh gen
Back in the days when the PS3 have more cores than your quad core intel cpu 😂
Hmm, how can you lose to company that counted replacing red ringed Xbox 360 consoles as a sale
Gamespot's views has been woefully low recently, and I dont know how I got unsubscribed. Content like this is what is required. Absolutely amazing
It's because there becoming out of touch with the industry
Great Video Series 👍🏼
PS3 did lose the 7th generation, they only outsold the Xbox 360 by a couple of mill units because they were on sale for over 2 years longer 😂.
Microsoft stopped counting systems sold around 2015 while Sony stopped in 2017.
When the Xbox One and PS4 actually went on retail, the Xbox 360 had 19m more units sold than the PlayStation 3 😂.
The reason of Xbox loosing is Kinect and I am talking for both gen 360 and one.
Sony: Price is $599
Customer: Aight, imma head out...
😂🤣
Absolutely love my PS3 slim but this is pure copium.
No? Because in my country the PS3 always did well, ever since the PS1 Sony pretty much dominated in my region.
I also think it's hard to make this video when xbox 360 last updated their sales in 2014 and Ps3's sales were updated in 2017
Bakeeeeelarrr cameooo! 👍👍🤟
Bruh PS3’s price was better long term than 360.
Rechargeable controllers, free online multiplayer , built-in WiFi, region free, real world online currency, Blu-Ray player, didn’t lock half the functionality of the console behind a paywall, HDMI port out of the gate, hardware that didn’t have a high failure rate
$600 may look steep but Microsoft nickel and dimed its consumers so much that they hard you paying more than you would get out of the box on PS3 in the long term
Sjono we also had rechargeable controllers.... ever heard of rechargable batteries? Also there were no features locked by a paywall...
I’ve thought about 12:06 everytime I watch that conference. 😂
PlayStation 3: The "Sega Saturn" of the 7th generation
I bet not many of you remember that the PS1 was actually going to be a Nintendo CD system (Project Reality) , but Nintendo being Nintendo, fudged up the negotiations and the PS1 was born, which proceeded to kick Nintendo's ass... (Nintendo later released what was going to be Project Reality as the Nintendo 64)
I thought that Sony's response to the PSN hack and the creation of PlayStation Plus and Sony giving away a bunch of free games helped.
Total sales doesn't indicate the winner of the console generation
Microsoft made way more money than Sony did
Sony infact lost a shit tone of money from the ps3 and the ramifications of that are still being felt by Sony to this day
Also PS3 only past 360 in sales extremely late in the generation makeing those later sales mostly irrelevant
Yup, 360 was still ahead the vast majority of that generation. PS3 just managed to barely pass it in overall global sales at the very end, but that didn't make up for all the money lost/not gained previously when you take everything into account, like you pointed out. A lot of people miss this part of the context of the situation.
And how did the RROD affect Xbox Sale numbers? And how much money did Xbox lose replacing all those defective Xbox’s? 2 billion dollars?
The 360 was released first which is the only reason they were leading sales. Sony eventually overtook them probably due to better exclusive games.
My first and most favorite console 😍😍😍
Sony couldn’t put rumble in at launch because they were in a lawsuit with immersion. The company that made rumble on the PlayStation controllers
brilliant stuff
PS3 won the console war because apparently there are games out there other than shooters. If you play RPGs (especially JRPGs), it was a no-brainer.
Where my PlayStation (any, 1, 2, 3) squad at!! 👑👑👑
it didn't almost lose it, it lost the second it came out. The xbox 360 had better framerate better graphics better menu options better ui better when hacked, the only thing ps3 had going for itself was that online was free and later on it was easy to jailbreak
And yet the PS3 still ended up selling more and winning.

Is the 60GB version considered the worst in terms of quality compared to 40GB, 80, or slim in general
It didn't have a rockly launch at all.
Consider the fact that the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market despite being at $600 people don't think of that the Blu-ray players were going for $1,000 in 2006 while the PS3 was selling for $600
I like this new series from GameSpot. Well done.
Xbox lineup for the future games looks great tho.
I hope xbox delivers this time
No xbox had never "won" a console generation, nor has xbox ever made any profit on their consoles since its inception in 2001.
Furthermore during the 8th gen, xbox gamers were not buying enough games, thus the creation of Gamepass as a plan b due to low sales.
If xbox was not connected Microsoft it would for sure have disappeared by the middle of the xbone gen.
Remember when PlayStation always won
Xbox 360>PS3 Xbox One
PS3 60GB cost $840 to make .
Just you wait.
They came back but they lost almost half of their ps2 customers , so keep that in mind
Everyone might say the ps3 is better, but we all know that the ps3/360 gen the Xbox had better exclusives, better controllers and a cheaper console overall more user friendly (except the red ring of death)

360 also lost momentum because they focused on Kinect.
The one thing that ps3 had over 360 was a Blu-ray player

It did

Wouldn't you want games released on the console that sold the most?
They really didn’t. The launch was bad but they didn’t lose and still beat Microsoft
Uh, they almost did actually. At a time where the whole corporation of Sony was hemorrhaging money and having to sell off multiple branches. PS3 came out on top at the very end of that generation, but no one, not even Sony was sure was going to happen.

Kurt seems to be stepping it up now after a shaky start. Good job!

Yeah, almost. Got to give credit to MS for their persistence. One of these decades they are going to sell more consoles.
they did that generation actually

Not globally, just in the NA region.

I know half my school had 360s and like 3 people had ps3s
Better check the numbers again because PS3 outsold 360 even after launching a year later.
By the end of the generation, around 2010-2011 I know a lot of my friends either bought PS3’s after their 360’s, or their 360’s died because of RROD and they switched to PS3 because of games like Uncharted and The Last of Us.
@@chrislaine5257 numbers is numbers maybe in Japan because I rarely knew people who had ps3s
101,63 million vs 87,4 million
2.) We never got official numbers from the Xbox 360!
"Wii" dont care about no wii, chad warden was unironically right
@@d9zirable So we should not care about the winner just becaues Sony was not Nr.1?
Stop pushing console wars.
Okay.

No, they're actually a thing.....
So just move on....
Stop pretending that your distaste for console war talk is ubiquitous; it's obviously a super popular topic for discussion
As a kid you get suckered in thinking it's an actual war to fight sides with. Then you get a little older and think calling it a war is silly and there's no need to spar. Then you realise corporate fighting leads to better deals for the consumer.
Your forgetting the ps2 was still outselling both
“PS3’s disastrous launch”
Xbox 360 sold 1.5 million in 2005 while being cheaper, being in more territories worldwide by the end of that year and having less competition
PlayStation 3 sold 1.84 million in 2006 while being more expensive, only being available in Japan and North America by the end of that year, releasing alongside another new console and having more competition
X360 had a worse launch yet people rarely bring up this fact
they had less xbox 360 units because alot of them were defective between August and October of 2005. they had thousands of dead 360's all piled up in the factory. That's why it was hard to get a 360, The RROD was a thing before the Launch day. hell some people who had brought new 360's had the RROD on launch day. Sony just didn't mfg. enough consoles for the the demand but sold more in the 2 countries.
At least in games the fight was always PS3 vs Xbox360, the Wii was its own thing.
Wii was just lucky and optimized than these consoles
I remember when no one cared about “console wars” and just played games.
Wut. It's always been like this. I guess you weren't around for Nintendo vs Sega?

PS3 until I die !!
Awesome!
But they.... They did lose the console war
Not really lmao. The console war is no more but Sony ended up winning in the final sector of the war so..
Ps2 beat the orginal Xbox, Ps3 overtook 360 by the end of the generation, Ps4 beat Xbone at the start of the generation itself.
Yeah.
sony save the PS3 at 2008
I played my Xbox for multiplayer and played my PS3 for Single player and Japanese games. I loved both. I had to replace both consoles. Red Ring of Death so replaced it for a first launch shiny 360 with chrome trim and the Original PS4 started to act up so I had to get a PS3 slim. But my ps3 library out grew my 360 library because of the Japanese games and exclusives.
Xbox 360 > Xbox One
All my Xbox friends moved to PS4 because of the Xbox One. Halo and Gears story ended on the 360 to us because it ended so well for one and not so well for the other.
playstation 3 won the generation because of its loyal customers , its exclusives and playstion's brand

Didn't the wii out sell both the 360 and ps3

Except even with PS3 worldwide appeal which 360 didn't have their is no clear indication PS3 ever outsold 360. MS stopped updating 360 sales numbers in 2014 when it was ahead of PS3 while Sony continued updating till 2017 so it's last sales numbers are NOT aligned.

Almost no one bought that separate HD DVD drive -- which is why they gave up on it pretty quick and Bluray won the format war that was briefly going on at the time, lol. It wasn't a requirement for gaming on the 360 at all, thankfully.
Deathbrewer Microsoft should’ve included a built in HD DVD drive for the 360 because a lot of games released later that gen were on multiple dvds.
