luke strawwalker indeed. I always think of it In terms of large stadiums as these are the biggest places a group of people routinely meet.
The US lost around 50,000 Kia in Vietnam and the same in ww1 (some sources say more than twice this but that includes illness such as influenza)
Put them two numbers together and that’s more than the entire capacity of Wembley stadium in London (Britain’s biggest sports stadium) which is horrific
The first day of the Somme was considered one of the worse in human history when it came to dead on one side. The British had nearly 20,000 dead that day and nearly 60,000 total casualties. So that’s like snapping your fingers and nearly a quarter of a Wembleys crowd dropped dead in a day and another half were wounded, missing or pows.

By 1918, Rawlinson listened and seriously took the advice from his junior commanders, in this the leaders of the two national armed forces in the Rawlinson's Army, Currie and Monash as to when to let it loose and when to stop. Their successes gave Haig clout now as to when to attack and when to stop offensives. The British Army had learned their lessons.

The British blockade was very deadly to the Germans. An estimated 150,000 people died from the blockade's effects. Then they also had to contend with Spanish flu. Nobody has any concrete numbers on how many German soldiers died from it - but in late summer and fall of 1918 on top of them being without food and having a quagmire of mud to negotiate, they were walking around with the flu too. 46,000 U.S. soldiers died from Spanish flu but they had loads of medical supplies and food to eat.

We could really need more videos on the Belgian army during WW1 consideringen they were a major party in the (western-) European theater since a lot of fighting took place in Belgium. With myself being grately interested in the Belgian military and it's very interesting to see what they've done. (Especially their cavalry).
I've seen some videos regarding the Belgian army but yet they are in far less quantity than other countries, of course this is understandable seeing that Belgium is only a smaller country which only fought in Europe & a bit in Africa. It just feels as if the country is burried under these larger worldpowers and it doesn't get as much attention as it deserves die what it contributed during the 4 long years it stood strong against the invaders. Same goes for some other small countries.
Yet this comment will fade away in a black hole never to be read.

Are there any accounts of this occurring in the war?

It happened during the early weeks of the war. The french wanted to take back Alssace-Loraine, so they towards it, but it eventually came to a stalemate. And that part of the western front didnt move that much until near the end of the war

Indy ppints out the changes-Haig listening to subordinantes and the German general staff devolving but he misses what is probably the singles greatest change in the entire war.
rewatch the section talking about the casualties for the british assault. yes they lost 40,ooo men BUT German losses, the losses of the defenders are far higher. In the past they might break even but usually the attacker suffered more. Now with mass desertions and better tactics the basic MATH of the battle field has changed.

I would hope that you do some immediate post-war episodes as there were still quite a lot of areas where the fighting didn't end after the official end of the Great War was declared. Much like in WW2 you had a lot of debts to be settled. For example in the immediate period post WW2 France had another 40,000 people die from violence. Would be interesting to see if that sort of thing happened and also how many people returned to their homes or were permanently displaced. It's usually the shake out after a war that is historically more important than the actual war itself.

Question for Out of the Trenches: With the war in the east largely over why did the Ottoman Empire leave one of their largest forces in the Caucasus? With the British surging north from Egypt surely it'd be better to defend their homes so they had an empire left at the end of this war.

It's interesting to consider what might have happened if instead of the Spring Offensive of 1918, and the heavy losses of their best infantry that entailed, the Germans had retreated to a much shorter defensive line in eastern Belgium, then let the Allies batter against it until they were ready to negotiate.

Question for Out of the Trenches- What was the role of the Indian Army outside of the Palestine front? I haven't heard of them in regular episodes since Gallipoli and the seige at Kut. How were they distributed in different theatre and in how many numbers and how were they organized? What were their differences in equipment, clothing, weapons, artillery? How were they affected by the modern war? Any notable actions and names? Where in India were they from? So far only heard about the Gurkhas and Sikhs, were there soldiers from other parts of the Dominion?
Need more details, the special episode only covers this very lightly.
