  • I decided to buy a 200L scotch whisky cask to commemorate my first distilling job working at The Borders Distillery. I filled my cask on July 1 2020, Canada Day. It will be finished maturing ten years from now on July 1 2030. This video is about my experience filling my very own private cask. #buyingwhisky #scotch #brewbird

    Learnt something new again. Seems an investment worth some consideration. The financial return are better than putting your money in the bank. But the joy of owning a cask of 200 litres single malt scotch whisky is significant to me. Will definitely consider this small investment. At least something to look forward to in the upcoming 10 years. This video will probably drum up some business for the distillery. Good luck.

    Whisky improves in the cask, therefore increases in value over time - simple. A 10 year investment should pay back 200%+

      Thanks. I can already imagine my future self subtly mentioning to people that I own an entire cask of scotch whisky in totally irrelevant conversations. I'm looking forward to it!

    Very interested in doing this! I live in Ontario and the only part I’m nervous about is getting the whisky back into Canada with customs and taxes.
    You looked into that at all, any where you could suggest I check for rules and costs etc?

    I'm having trouble deciding on the right cask for a 12 year maturation. I know to recask in the final run. I want to make people happy with a great product. I'm having trouble finding the most popular ex bourbon casks. and beyond bourban there are many options too including sherry. My question is, what was the best way to learn that helped you decide on the cask you chose? Love your channel. subcribed today.

      Thanks for supporting the channel! I got to ask my distilling friends about the different cask options, and try samples from different types of casks as well. Can't really go wrong with a rum or bourbon cask though. A sherry cask will be more expensive. I usually just google questions I have, and sometimes I ask questions on reddit to see what other people think. I'd probably post this question on reddit along with other details and see what kind of answers you get.

    I've always been interested in owning barrels of different types of alcohol, just something to keep and pass on to my children. I do not drink hard alcohol at all, but think that this could be a worthwhile investment for my family. I'm not particular about the kind of alcohol that I want to collect. It can be bourbon, whisky, vodka, gin, or anything else that's considered hard alcohol. My only concern is how long does something like this keep. Can it evaporate? Will it ever go bad? Since I never plan on drinking this myself (or even opening a barrel), will the flavor improve over decades? What are come other considerations I should take into account? How much, in general, does a 200 liter of whisky cost, versus other types of alcohol? Are there any types that would make a better investment over others? Do the barrel contents have to be "stirred" at any time, or is it better to leave it still?

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a lot of questions you have there. Some of them are answered in this other video I made about investing in whisky: th-cam.com/video/pHLKIwusa-Y/w-d-xo.html
      Alcohol does evaporate. Theoretically it will not go bad. The flavour will develop as it ages, but an aging barrel of whisky is like an aging person, some people get better with time while others get worse. Just because a whisky is 40+ years old doesn't automatically mean it will taste better than an 8 year old whisky.
      When buying the cask you need to consider whether the cost includes storage in the warehouse, whether bottling and duty fees are included, and if you live somewhere else you will need to factor in the shipping cost. Alternatively, you could just buy the cask and try to sell the entire cask off after a few years. My cask costs £1837. Investing in gin and vodka isn't really a thing since they aren't 'aged spirits' usually. No the barrel contents are not stirred.

    How much does this whole operation cost? This looks exciting! :)

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It costs 2,000 pounds to buy a private cask here, but I got an employee discount so it was only 1,837 pounds. That includes the physical cask itself and the bottling fees. However, I will also have to pay the duty on it once it gets bottled later on.
