  • MATCH OF THE EIGHTIES - 1981-82 SEASON
The second from a six-part series, first broadcast by the BBC in 1997, in which Danny Baker takes a retrospective look back at the previous decade's football.
It's the end of an era in many ways at Anfield, as legendary former manager Bill Shankly dies, and Ray Clemence joins Spurs to be replaced by the eccentric Bruce Grobbelaar, who is blamed by many for Liverpool's indifferent league form. Last season's champions Aston Villa part company with Ron Saunders, but march towards a European Cup final, while promoted Swansea City prove to be the season's surprise package under the guidance of John Toshack.

Mortimer was correct, the European Cup is the greatest trophy a club captain could lay his hands on.

The USSR was a highly underrated side in the 80's.

Ozzie came back to Spurs after personal turmoil, only for the club to treat him like shit when he took over as boss.. Nicholson, Burkinshaw, Spurs don't respect loyalty

The abuse that ardlies and villa got from the english fans in this season of 1981/82 was disgusting...

I totally agree with you. But I also add that the abuse that the black players got for decades before that, and ,misses thrown, was even worse and NEVER addressed by the FA. They were basically expected to just shrug it off and ignore it. And if they complained THEY were seen as the problem!!! Pisses me off - and still happens in many stadiums today (mainly in continental Europe). No war required to trigger this abuse!

@@tdonovan4735 Those're two different issues though. No point in comparing them, as both are equally valid.

I was 10 when the Falklands war kicked off (pun intended), and although I hated the argies and hoped our boys would kick their arses, I always felt sorry for Ossie and Ricky...
Still, somethings are more important than footie.

"'89 was a Friday night...if it was a Saturday, we'd have beaten Arsenal."
Are you joking? "If 'ifs and buts' were candy and nuts, every day would be Christmas."
It wasn't. You didn't. Get over it and quit making excuses.

No, no. YOU don't get over it. I have no reason to "get over it" nor any reason to embrace a silly excuse.
