Join us on Expedition Haunts as we look at the Story of Halloween Horror Nights Orlando 2008's icon Bloody Mary. The 18th year of year event was tied into her in every aspect from the houses to the scare zones yet she was never seen again.
Thank you for watching this episode of Expedition Theme Park

Fun fact! I had my Universal Orientation last fall (to perform at HHN) and one of my orientation leaders was media Bloody Mary! Shes been performing since the first HHN
(She was in Vamp 85 this year if anyone was curious)
Is she also the original/media Chance? Because their voices sounded really similar!
Laura Cleary. She has a vlog with her husband.
@@cannibalisticrequiem no Chance was played by Erin Cline. Bloody mary was Laura Cleary.
SAME!! Back when I did 2016!!
As a Bloody Mary fan boy, I was beyond words.
Glad you did this. I think she was the peak of HHN. Everything came together perfectly. Story, the icon, the houses and that feeling she's always watching you. You always felt her presence and constantly reminded Bloody Mary is there.
I miss her and I hope she comes back as well. She's my favorite icon and my favorite year. I mean hell this year gave us Dead Exposure. She deserves to come back.
Most definitely! This was my first year ever going to HHN & I was genuinely terrified even walking up to the gates! The big screen showing her w/ the glass breaking & those amazing sound effects got my heart racing lol I was only 13yrs old and was still such a wussy but yes, this theme was amazing!! I’ve been every year since bloody mary & that year + Chucky doll year was hands down the best!
I was HHN's version Bloody Mary for Halloween this year and ended up winning a costume contest, she's my favorite icon.
Amazing! I wanna see
Oh man, I wish more theme parks focused on comprehensive storytelling like this. It’s so satisfying to hear all the side plots and characters coming together to match with all the rooms, plus the use of their website to supplement it.
I'd like to see more videos on the less popular icons, in all honesty! I have yet to see a video about The Storyteller/Elsa Stritch, so I always thought it would be really cool for someone to do a video on both The Storyteller, and The Terra Queen-- like, talking about how the idea for the Terra Queen, and Terra Cruentus, came about, and why they had to create a new icon at the last minute, and what compelled them to create The Storyteller in particular! I'd also love a video on Chance, because I feel like (and hope) there has to be more to her character than just being a Harley Quinn clone!
And if you're going to look at Event Mascots, maybe you could do videos on Nightmare/Knightmare from HHN12, Fear from HHN20, Darkness (and why they chose that character from Legend, when they should've gone with Meg Mucklebones) from HHN16, and definitely a video about HHN Bear, because I NEED TO KNOW!
It would also be really cool to see more videos about the original houses and scarezones from over the years, like you did for Shadybrook Asylum and Rest Home! I'm also really interested in the story behind The Slaughterhouse-- especially since there's no information about it, or pictures on the HHN wikia! A video about that one rumored house they never did because it was "too intense" would be awesome too! (I don't remember the name of the house, but it was mentioned by a scareactor in the 2006 HHN docu/special, and I believe there's an old HHN message board on the web that explains in detail the concept of the house, and how it was going to function), as well as other actual houses, and scarezones such as Castle Vampyr, Field of Screams, American Gothic, etc. Maybe even a video on HHN14 since that was the first year that they didn't have an event icon, but all of the houses and scarezones had a connecting theme of maddness, that tied into the "What's Your Breaking Point?" tagline. (Kinda like what they did for Bloody Mary's story and event!)
What do you think about the Icons and Mascots. I can send links of the icons for each to help.
@@disneyboy3030 I like them all. I definitely wish HHN Hollywood had more original icons like Orlando does. All we've had is La Llorona for like 3 - 5 years in a row, same house with not much changed, and I think one year they did El Cucuy, but that's about it. It's fine but those are also well established Mexican legends, so it toes the line of appropriation since it's a mainly white A&D team using these non-white legends to entertain event goers (many of whom are also white). I wish Hollywood would do more original stuff period, but a lot of it are IPs and it gets so boring seeing them reuse Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Child's Play, Walking Dead, The Purge, and now Stranger Things. You know that period of years where the Orlando event had no original icons at all and just relied on IPs? That's the Hollywood event every year (excluding the years they used Mexican urban legends to entertain white crowds).
It was awesome to watch this video. I worked for UO in the pyro and fx department during this HHN. I worked running and repairing the fog machines in the schoolhouse scarezone. It was a blast. Also worked as the "streets fx lead" the following year. One of my favorite gigs ever.
That’s awesome!
Woo! Horror Nights in January!
We give you halloween in January.
It's a truly immersive halloween experience.
Man you should do the usher he has an awesome back story and his year 2009 had an interactive website as well
This was the icon that first introduced me to HHN and my favorite house, Scary Tales. Although it wouldn't be until 2018 that I would be able to go myself (I was 8 at the time Bloody Mary was the icon) and experience the Scary Tales house for myself, it was really fun to be able to watch walkthroughs of the houses and scare zones online.
I'm hoping Bloody Mary will one day return so I can be scared by her for real.
I miss how intricate the HHN website used to be. I remember getting out of school and running back home to see if the website was updated. And going on the HHN vault website and speculating with others as to what the houses were going to be. Those were the good old days. I loved how immersive legendary truth was during the Bloody Mary year too. Didn't they have some kind of puzzle where if you went on certain days at a certain part of the park they would give you something?
Excellent video! I’ve never been to HHN, but I became a fan of the event because of the rich backstories. The website used to be a wonderfully immersive experience. Unfortunately, it seems like the current marketing team really lacks that spirit. 😕
I remember the radio commercial and the TV commercials for this always freaked me out. I lived in Florida at the time and we got the commercials constantly. I think this icon really was a great one.
It makes me very happy that HHN content is coming out in January!
It’s HHN all year around over here!
OMG! You're not going to believe it, but I was bingeing all of your HHN videos this morning!! I'm so excited to see this!!
(I'm also kinda surprised, as I was expecting your next HHN video between now and your HHN Hollywood retrospective to be about the town of Carey, where all of the stories have been set, since you mentioned you would be taking a look at the town next! Not that I'm complaining, since any HHN video from you makes me happy!! (Also, I watched the video of the Orlando creative team podcast/interview for HHN28, and was completely surprised to find out Carey, Ohio is actually a real place! Now I'm looking forward to your video about it even more, as I'm dying to know what aspects of the real town influenced the HHN storylines, and if there's a sliver of truth to any of them!)
I am working on that one but wanted to do this first! :)
I miss when this much love, passion, and creativity was out into the event. It just doesn’t feel the same to me as it used to. In these years it always felt like their was passion put into the event, and I remember getting lost in the lore on the website for hours!
Thanks for crediting my vids :) It was so difficult getting those back then.
I wish HHN would bring back icons. They honestly add so much immersion to the event
Agree
with how great of a remake RE 2 is actually really want an RE 2 house especially with how atmospheric they have made the police station
They did it back in the day. Resident evil, escape from Raccoon city
Oh hey, I'm in that picture on the legendary truth website! That night was a blast. I will say that even being a part of it and the super fun scavenger hunt, it was very difficult to keep up with the elaborate storyline. Thanks for making these videos.
The year of Bloody Mary is my favorite of HHN history. They should bring her back no matter what.
Agree
Absolutely correct, this one is a classic and I truly enjoyed it 💚
Fun fact I made this in a hotel in Amsterdam on a trip ha
@@ExpeditionThemePark SO COOL!!!!!
Oh dear.
I have something to tell you...
I don't think she's coming back.
Uhmmmm why?
I am so glad that you have started to do this series! I binged watched your Halloween Horror Nights series and was intrigued by each of the characters/hosts. My personal favorites are the Caretaker and the Director.
It’s sad because she is one of my favourite HHN icons of all time but I don’t think she will ever return which makes me very sad :(
Hoping that they bring back bloody mary.. she's so iconic
This particular event was really good. I wish Universal studios . Brings bloody mary, back. Someday 👍👍
Sad you didn't mention her cameos in later years and the fact she was the one who unleashed fear from the lantern
I did but I cut them out as most were unconfirmed and speculation but for that one you gotta wait for the Fear episode ;)
I love the concept of the Phobias anr Psychology. I'd love to see more on that concept, or psychological horror. You could get Silent Hill to get your first IP and you're set.
It could take place in Florida or Carey, Ohio, with a psychologist who either is trying to see what phobias all the guests have "for sick kicks," or thinks the guests want phobias like the "posers" they are. Most likely, the signature move would use a mix of Hypnosis and Dreams to create the scarezones and the haunting and house.
Who here was traumatized from the short version of the commercial that played on TVs? It didn’t have enough time to set-up what was happening. Cried for like… half an hour with that screamer at the end. I think that’s why I hated Halloween horror nights for years.
Yes and the billboards I would see of it scared me too. That commercial was the reason I stopped watching tv during Halloween so I would see those horror nigh commercials until I was like 14😂
When I was in like the 2nd grade I had a dream that we were at school trying to figure out the mystery behind bloody mary and we ended up finding her ghost, her husband's severed head, and like.. flesh but we never talked about that. Anyway we were trying to find a way to let her and her husband's ghosts move on.
Did you?
I really enjoyed the journal entries on the web site. Wish I could read them again. Loved this vid. Well done!!! So glad you covered her 💚. I would love to see all the icons yet to be covered. Great series!!!
Even tho its sad we never saw her again as a icon the actress they use for the comercials is a comedic riot...
Love the HHN video this late in the year, I hope that continues! I'd love to see a video about other icons like Eddie or the Director or even Cindy!
Great back story and super great websites back then. I only wish the websites were like these now. We didn't even attend HHN until 24, but I remember this year and website and were already following along (even with Tyler then at age 10 lol). My fave is Usher or Caretaker. Tyler's fave is director. ~Dawn
Bloody Mary is my favorite of the "forgotten icons", representative of one of the most interwoven narratives and well-planned houses, scare zones, and memorable marketing for her year, HHN 18. With the uptick in interest in urban legends, scary folklore, and "tests of courage" from Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Asia in general, I am thinking she could be formally brought back for HHN Singapore someday. The Director and Jack have found new life over in that park's version of Horror Nights. Why not Dr. Mary Agana? Although my ultimate ideal is for her to resurge at as many parks across the globe, with web design and internet marketing improving in the almost 18 years since we first stepped into the Mirror World.
I would like to see a video that covers both the backstory for both the Caretaker and Cindy because I believe their story is very interesting and how there is so much room to build upon their story.
Its gonna be lit that they make a movie of bloody mary within the storyline of dr. Agana fr
I understand I'm a bit late to the party with this, but after checking out your amazing videos, perusing the comments, and doing my own research on HHN, I came up with an idea for HHN, that I think would be fantastic for Universal to do. The year would be themed around a coming-together of icons in the vein of Sweet 16, with Jack, The Caretaker, The Director, and The Storyteller back again, but this time Chance joins them too, but there's a twist. The opening scaremoines would feature the five return, banter a bit, and then once they're about to begin Halloween Horror Nights Year Whatever, they are suddenly stopped when a voice rings in the air. The voice is low and riding like a cello. The other characters look in confusion trying to figure out the source of the voice...that is except for Jack. The clown's makeup can't hide the fact that for the first time ever, he is...afraid. He knows the voice well, and he wishes he didn't. The source of the voice walks out: Eddie, his screwed-in muzzle shining bright and his chainsaw cradled safely in his muscle-bound right arm. He has come to get his revenge on Jack for leaving him all those years ago. He's been at it for a long time, and now it has come. And he's not alone, either. Joining him onstage is Lady Luck, Cindy, and the Usher. The downtrodden icons are coming for their time. Chance makes fun of them calling the number advantage until Usher brings out a mirror, and with the incantation, they summon Bloody Marry. She joins them when she sees Storyteller one of the board members who denied her funding. She joins them. Eddie and Jack also show that they have their own armies; Jack with his clowns and Eddie with a reformed Chainsaw Drill Team, and Sam Meetz is their war chief. The armies make their terms and they leave, before telling the audience that they are now in it too. Both armies rush into the crowd and scare before tearing the entrance open, and it has begun. That's the premise: warring factions of icons with Jack's party taking over Universal Studios, and Eddie's party taking Islands of Adventure. The houses and scare zones will be themed after them, and other characters affiliated with them, with a few originals and maybe an IP. Sorry for the long description.
She was the first icon I ever experienced. Love this series!!!!!
Please do more video about her. And hoping that HHN will bring her back with all the classic icons like lady luck.. (Idk bout 'fear' tho..)
Never been to Florida but Halloween Horror Nights would be a great reason to go!!!! Love all these videos about HHN!!!! Great job!
I remember this website. I loved it
Not to be picky but is there any chance you could give a time code warning on flashing lights and such? I'm very sensitive to those things and I'd still like to watch your interesting videos. I know it's probably to be expected with Halloween things, and I can see you warn about it in the description, but time stamps would really help in knowing when to look away or skip.
Apart from that, thank you for another really interesting look at this whole HHN. I've very much enjoyed your other videos on it, too. :D
Finally! Also the actress is Mary was fantastic
I believe the actress they had to portray Mary Agana/Bloody Mary at the press junket, is the same actress that is Chance (in all of the promos that feature Chance, as well as any opening/closing ceremony shows, press meet-ups, and VO for the park shows). At least I think so, because when I watched the video of the press conference they had to announce Bloody Mary, and had her show up, I noticed her voice sounding very similar to Chance's.
((I'm not sure the setup UO has for their icons at the park-- if it's something similar to Disney, where they have the main actor playing the character for press/promo stuff voice the lines for in park shows, so a scareactor playing the role in the park can lip sync the lines in the park, or if they just have the scareactors in the park read the lines live while doing their best impression of the character, or if they have the actual actors for all of the promos and press related stuff actually play their characters in the park every night. Which, the last one, seems like it would be the most tiresome, as it would be the one actor playing the icon for authenticity and not having a back-up scareactor to cover them for breaks, every single show, every night of the event that year.))
Jes Lightning that’s bizzare to think about ! Such different personalities
I was in Florida in October of that year, I remember the ad with Bloody Mary coming through the mirror being shown on TV constantly in the hotel, absolutely traumatised 12-year-old me 😂
The GOAT.
Loved this icon such a classic fingers crossed they bring her back at some point.
I can see why you wanted to wait and tell this Horror Nights fully on its own! Awesome stuff.
Fantastic video brother!!!!
Hey, I was born in 2008. It’s cool to know that this was going on when I was born.
Just so Mary knows. My biggest phobias are financial security, stable relationships, and spongebob themed lingerie.
can you plz do a video base on the la llorona house in universal studios hhn? thank you!!! love your work
I remember seeing the ads for that year's HHN as a kid and being terrified of mirrors for a while.
There was a moms group in Orlando petitioning that their advertising that year was too scary. They did a great job!
i Actually never been to HHN because i live in the netherlands. but my favorite characters after doing research is Chance just her back story and personage are very well crafted and I love Harleen quinzel From DC to and I heard that Chance is actually inspired by Harley quinn.
i went to my very first HHN and i thought it was bone clenchingly horrifying. but i felt like the themes couldve been stronger for that year, as a lot of the houses felt like walking through a maze and being yelled at
Do The Usher!
You already know im crying over here
You deserve so many more subs
Her promo for TV caused a lot of controversy as it would scare the living shit out of kids to the point people started complaining about it, and her gory sliced up face on every tenth billboard in Central Florida.
I am not surprised haha
Unsure if you mention this in the video, but the reason she hasn't returned is likely due to liscensing issues...
Basically someone copyrighted the Bloody Mary urban legend (somehow?), but at the same time, since her backstory and design are original she's an Original and Liscensed Icon
Basically Mary’s philosophy was “you can’t be scared if you die!”
the promo for this terrified me as a child
I like Jack and the director the best. Maybe it would be cool to see the Sandman as a future icon. He gets you in your sleep.
Jack is still my favorite
My favorite icon of Halloween horror nights is Bloody Mary🩸
Ah man i was really hoping you'd go more into the copyright stuff, because all i ever seem to hear is 'because of copyright issues' and no one ever goes into it. Now i know that someone has the copyright to 'Bloody Mary' that isn't Universal but not to Mary Agana which is owned by Universal and that still leaves me confused, who has this trademark? how can they prevent Universal from using a figure from folklore (something you can't claim to own) and more their own version of that figure (which you can claim to own and they do)? Does this copyright holder just have the rights to the name 'Bloody Mary' when it comes to haunted houses? If so why not call her just 'Mary' or 'Mary Agana'? Will this madness never end!
otherwise, good video mate :D :D
Aha! this is a quote from a forum
"Apparently, this makeup artist/haunt industry insider, Bobbie Weiner, has trademarked the name Bloody Mary. So basically, any else in the makeup/haunt industry cannot use the name Bloody Mary in their products because of brand confusion.
This lady has licensed her name and products out to the various theme parks through the years to let them do a Bloody Mary attraction. In 2008, Universal did pay her to use the name and also sold some of her products. It wasn't a "grand mistake" or a mistake of any sorts because they HAD to pay her, or they would have been/could have been sued for using her trademarked name in an industry that she is known in."
that was a great year the sacrezones were excellent overall one of the better HHN
Excellent work man, just wondering where you got the music for your video?
Make the next expedition haunts on the “Terror Tram” from Hollywood’s horror nights!
Woah man spoopy
I'd love you to do HHN19 and the Usher. He's my personal favorite.
Scary-ass cool!!!☻💀☠🖤🕷🕸
Back when the web site was a part of the event good times.
please do history on hallow scream bush gardens, no one has done that and its very interesting
God this brightened up my shitty day. I love itttt
Can you do the other horror nights website backstories?
maybe if Universal use the name Dr Mary Agana, they can bring her back under that name
Universal. Bring her back
Not sure with the new house hhn icons captured had some bloody mary moments in the story tellers area.
I saw that! I went crazy in that moment trying to see her but she's not there. But I am really glad she's not forgotten.
I hope one day she makes a comeback. It would be interesting to see if she ever does since she is a force outside of Fears control.
Jack is the face of HHN
Will you do more videos on the other Icons from HHN?
Yes
Can you do a video on project 42?
The Usher.
Halloween in January? What’s next, Christmas in July???
Bloody Mary is cool and all but...

@@SUMMONER917 get the hell outta her jarjar!!
My favorite are the director and the usher could u do a video on them both please I would really appreciate if u did
Feels lovecraftian
Who owns the trademark?
So, who DOES own the copyright?
just to ask, how comes Lady Luck never had her own house?
Can someone tell me what is the background music called?
You know….his fear of bacteria and illness seem more then warranted in these past couple of years
What's the name of the music that plays at 5:15?
Please do the usher🙏🙏
Terra Queen!!!
Did Mary Agana go to university or did she choose to be a psychiatrist just like that.
hi everybody
Anyone wish the site was still as creative? And who owns the right to the name anyway?
Please do a lady luck video
Dose anyone know the name of this song that comes out on the last bit of this video?
The very last song at the end with a links?
Expedition Theme Park yes :)
It was used in a scarezone in 2008 but it’s actually from Spookslot at Efteling
Danse Macabre Camille Saint-Saëns
