One really small detail I love, is that in the scene with her family at the IRS building at the end, we get to see both Evelyn and even Deidre's growth in a very subtle way: at the beginning of the film, when Diedre asks if she hears her she says "Mrs. Wang" (saying it wrong, too) as if she's just a number to her, not a person, and at the end she says "Evelyn" because she's learned to care, too. And Evelyn, instead of lying and saying "of course I'm listening" she's just honest: "Sorry, what did you say?" I've seen some people wonder why we end on that, but I think it's a great line to show that she's present enough now that she wants to hear it, she won't pretend anymore to get by.

Between generational/family trauma, depression and neurodivergency, and just taking a positive view of nihilism this movie tells a really small scale and personal story. It just uses the multi-verse to tell it in the largest scale possible. It very rapidly became my favorite movie of all time.

someone mentioned in another reaction video that part of the reason why we are shown evelyn in a lesbian relationship is because it helps her failed version empathise not only with the tax lady but with her gay daughter and that just uncovered another layer of a million layers of why i think this is my favourite movie of all time

I cannot express all the emotion and meaning behind every single thing. I can only say that I'm happy to be alive in this moment of human history to see this happening. I watched EEAAO in the cinema, is something I'll be proud to say to my children.

I've never seen a movie tackle Nihilism this well...because she says it great at the end...when they're hugging and she says "we can do whatever we want." That's how a lot of Nihilists feel...not depressed that nothing matters...but happy...that the universe is entirely what we make it.

Saw it in the theatre (with my Malaysian-Chinese wife) in March of 2022 and thought "Best movie of the year".
Saw it again two weeks later and revised that to "Best movie of the last 5 years".
Once it came to streaming I watched it seven more times, and only by the 4th viewing was I able to really grasp how extraordinary Stephanie Shu's performance was.
By the 6th viewing I had decided it was the best movie of all time, ahead of Shawshank, Godfather, Citizen Kane. Still have that opinion.

Joy lost her sense of purpose after becoming jobutupaki because she became omnipresent. she quite literally experiences everything everywhere all at once which made her feel as though nothing matters anymore since all she got was a few specs of time where any of it made sense.
she searched for the "right Evelyn" because the worst version of herself (in the omniverse) is the only one with potential to become jobutupaki. and much like jobu-joy/alpha-joy, who was the worst version of herself struggled to live up to her brilliant mom's expectations, Evelyn is also the worst version of herself.
she just wanted to be understood for both being the worst at everything and being omnipresent and wondered if it'd change her mind about ending it all.
honestly i wholeheartedly regret not seeing this movie in theaters because it's easily my favorite one of all time. oh to witness this masterpiece and to hear its beautiful soundtrack for the first time on the big screen would've been a stellar experience. what a shame.

I cry almost every time I watch it and even cried watching this reaction, and it’s because I really relate to Joy especially with being a lesbian and feeling like you’re not respected by family even though they say they support you lmao.
Off topic from that, it took me until this reaction to realise both the directors (The Daniels) are in this, I think? The guy who gets sucked into the bagel, and the guy who gets spanked by Michelle Yeoh. And on top of that cameo, at least one person from “Turn Down For What” music video also turned up. The Daniels directed that too.

Funny thought was the first time I watched it, I told my friends and they were really surprised that it got me so emotional. I watched it with my parents, and I think they didn't relate to it as much either. It goes to show that this film delivers a message which can be taken so personally by some of us because it's so specific, it's just a tiny feeling that some of us hide away and when it's brought out so clearly and so well fleshed out it really brings it out in ourselves. Not everyone likes this movie, but to me it was so special.

Oscar season generally means big views for films that may not have received the due attention when first released. This came out a year ago, despite it I think wrapping set just before the pandemic broke. So it laid dormant until early 2021 and somehow kept the buzz going through the whole year and has vacuumed up awards as we approach the Oscars tomorrow night. Regardless of what happens with that, this film has kept the love and attention and I'm just really happy for all actors and crew involved in this and of course the directorial efforts of Daniels. Also props to the three posters that I can see in your room: "The Color of Money" is sadly overlooked by most reactors, so nice. Strangelove is the funniest of Kubrick films thanks to Sellers, especially given the director's popular quality of being "cold." And the Royal Tenenbaums, which featured Owen Wilson's classic line "Here I come." Good taste is my sense.

Also, Re: your question at 43:13 - I think the answer is that it's BOTH a real reality where these exact events are actually happening to a version of Evelyn, AND there's also another universe where those same events are happening in a fictional movie. Infinite possibilities, after all - so both things can be true at the same time. :)
