I mean the RTD era really is where the magic is. The momentum and community and hype he brought to it.

Great video; the RTD era was my childhood and I still have so many great memories of it. I haven’t got the writers guide book and after seeing this video I will definitely buy it.

Beautiful discussion, RTD is absolutely my nostalgia era and so I found listening to this very satisfying. I love hearing love for RTD, especially the stuff that gets so heavily derided like End of Time. He’s a brilliant writer and I’m so glad he got to write for Doctor Who, and be the one to bring it back, I think the show is better for it.

I started watching when season 9 came out and for a newcomer back then the 10th doctor was just the most engaging, charismatic and fun doctor. I don't think it's only because of Tennant's attractiveness that people instantly love him when they first watch the show. RTD's era was so open for new fans.

Can you two do a chat video based around the idea of story arcs in doctor who, especially new who. Hearing you guys talk about bad wolf and the doctor dances is making me want to know what you think about things like the crack

I didn't start watching Doctor Who until 2006 and my first Doctor was David Tennent. I watched until the end of the Season then went back and caught the 9th Doctor Christopher Eccelston! Totally awesome and I was a Doctor Who fan from there. Now I watch Doctor Who fan films and some of them are really not just good but awesome in their own right. DW2012 on TH-cam. Check it out.

Favourite Doctor is Smith but favourite era is RTD. There's an undescribable magic to it. I don't think it will ever be recreated. I watched 1-6 in the same year but always feel nostaligia for RTD as if it was all years before Middays era, it's strange.

great video yet again guys :)
i think the biggest issue i have with the russel t davies era is rose and sometimes the tenth doctor. I really don't like the romance and i'm so glad he didn't go with penny as another lover for ten, so happy we got Donna who was just a great companion and i love them just being best friends. Also as for end of time, i don't have issues with the companion stuff at the end, it did feel earned i definitely agree, the problem i have with end f time is the cafe scene which badly explains regeneration and the whole radiation chamber scene. I Just hate how much of a dick ten comes across as. He's so selfish and comparing him to every other doctor, they went out like heroes and they was selfless and brave. thats' what the doctor should be for me and ten just annoyed me and i felt like he was a dickhead. for exapmle, caves of androzani, the 5th doctor after knew peri one story, and he saves her without any question, he doesn't even know if he'd regenerate as he famously states "it feels different this time", also 12 in the doctor falls, he gave his life to save people, even though he says earlier in the episode that he doesn't know if it'd even work, it was just chance but yet he still was willing to die. ten saying "exactly look at you, not remotely important" to wilf and then goes and says "its my honour" just doesn't make any sense to me, he just comes across as a selfsh dick in my opinion. But going back to the rose thing, she's personally my least favourite companion of all doctor who. and for all russels era shes the through line for the most part. series 1 and 2 you have her as companion, series 3 ten never stops whining about her and she's bought up every other episode. series 4 there are hints of her returning and then the finale she comes back and all the fangirl ten and rose shippers rejoice. then end of time we see her again. as shes my least favourite companion shes in his era too much for me and its blown way out of proportion and its so in my face that i can't enjoy an episode without her face or name popping up. That's a big issue for me. i do like a lot of decisions russel made but how he wrote ten in end of time and series 2 with the romance between ten and rose was awful decisions in my opinion. Please don't hate on me, just all opinion and i hope people can understand where im coming from :)
Keep up the great videos guys :D

Cucumber and Banana are brilliant, but Bob & Rose is probably my favourite of his, behind Years and Years. Casanova and Second Coming are both brilliant to see Tennant and Eccleston

This might be controversial but in my opinion RTD is ridiculously overrated as a writer and showrunner. I think some of it comes down to nostalgia if I’m honest. Looking at his episodes, hardly any of them are anything special:
    Rose - Average
The End of the World - Average
Aliens of London/World War Three - Poor
    The Long Game - Poor
Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways - Very Good
    The Christmas Invasion - Poor
    New Earth - Poor
    Tooth and Claw - Good
    Love and Monsters - Awful
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday - Average (this one I find to be vastly overhyped)
    The Runaway Bride - Average
    Smith and Jones - Good
    Gridlock - Very Good
Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords - Ranges from Good to Awful
Voyage of the Damned - Average
    Partners in Crime - Good
    Midnight - Brilliant
    Turn Left - Very Good
The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End - starts Good but ends Awfully
    The Next Doctor - Average
The End of Time - Awful
His showrunning skills are also inflated by a lot of people:
Series 1 is very hit or miss (Dalek, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways are very good, but are balanced out by Aliens of London/World War Three, The Long Game and Boom Town. The Doctor rarely resolves the plot and the story arc is not really a proper story arc. Putting a few words in random places that have NO effect on the episodes just to lazily throw them into the finale is not really a story arc.)
Series 2 is the weakest RTD series for me (The Girl in the Fireplace and The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit are the only good episodes, The Christmas Invasion, New Earth, Love and Monsters and Fear Her bring it down. The romance between 10 and Rose feels incredibly out of place for me, and her departure is overly melodramatic.)
Series 3 is again very hit or miss (Gridlock, Human Nature/The Family of Blood, Blink and Utopia are good, Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks, The Lazarus Experiment, 42 and Last of the Time Lords are all Awful. Martha got royally screwed over by RTD. She gets overshadowed by 10’s whining about Rose in her own series whilst being bogged down by her family. She gets even more screwed when she suddenly marries Mickey instead of Tom Milligan. John Simm’s Master is not intimidating, Derek Jacobi blew him out of the water in 5 minutes. His plan is nonsensical and is solved by the worst resolution I’ve seen in television.)
Series 4 is probably RTD’s strongest series (The Fires of Pompeii, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Midnight and Turn Left are all very good, whilst The Doctor’s Daughter, The Unicorn and the Wasp and The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End are all Poor. Donna is brilliant as she breaks the mould of other RTD companions, Wilfred is iconic. The problems are shown in the finale again though. The Daleks are defeated by pressing buttons, the Reality Bomb is ridiculous as surely it would have succeeded in another universe, Rose comes back and acts as selfish as ever, the Doctor barely does anything, Rose’s ending in Doomsday is completely undermined, and Davros is written as a raving lunatic instead of the character seen in Genesis of the Daleks.)
The Specials are as weak as series 2 (The Waters of Mars is the only good episode. The End of Time is probably the worst story since Fear Her, and the rest are unremarkable.)
Overall RTD is good when he’s given limitations. Midnight proves this, but he gets too carried away, as seen in The End of Time. Personally I vastly prefer Moffat, but he certainly has his faults.
Those are just my thoughts though, it’s fine if you disagree.

Wow I think I literally agree with everything you said here. Though I quite like The Stolen Earth and The Unicorn and The Wasp, and I think it's a bit silly to say that Series 1 doesn't have an arc. There's no filler at all. Every episode ties the series together in the finale-each episode giving lasting impacts to either the Doctor or Rose which will be thematically revisited later in the series. But I digress. I agree with basically everything you said, but the Russel Era is my favourite. I guess the good episodes out weigh the bad for me, and via versa for you. Weird. But thanks for articulating my thoughts. I'm glad there's someone out there who sees Doctor Who how I see it haha.

Precisely my take on things, too, including the relative strengths of each series. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy the majority of RTD's stories, but they are over-rated by some fans, usually because it was in the RTD era that they started watching the show. Now, I've been watching for nearly 50 years and I'm not in thrall to any particular era, and from my perspective I have to say that Moffat was the stronger writer of the two. It's all relative, though, and RTD is still a great writer/showrunner, without whose efforts we wouldn't have the modern show at all.

The Judoon would have been a great idea if they didn't look like Rhinos. Why do they have to look like that? It's very lazy, and makes what could be a serious alien race into a joke. Draw inspiration from Rhinos as an alien design by all means, give them grey skin, give them a horn or two, but don't just pop an animal head on a humanoid body!
