- Cape Town delivered in spectacular fashion for the start of the longest leg in the Race’s history: from over 30 knots of wind on one side of the race course to virtually no wind on the other side as the teams fell under the shadow of Table Mountain. Drama was also thrown in the mix with 2 teams suffering minor reparable damages.

Malizia seemed to be the most over engineered boat from the little I gleaned from the preliminary reviews. Heavier than the others, over 2m of head room in parts of the boat and a dedicated crew rest/sleeping area. She is designed for the Southern Ocean and knew they'd be slower elsewhere. Quite amazing to see her lead this section given the light conditions at the back of the course. She's the only one to change to a heavier sail and it payed off.

I love the IMOCA's on the route du Rhum, Vendee Globe so mostly singlehanded . I do not like them on the Ocean Race. Look at this, only 5 starters, 2 with problems already. This has become like doing 24hr of Le Mans with F1 cars. The feel of long distance ocean-racing with a lot of boats, a lot of crew completely gone. Sad ...

So sad to see a monumental race like this with such a history getting to this point. There is really no excitement on my side for this one. And I got into sailing with the VOR.

Ik was jaren geïnteresseerd, maar nu zegt het me helemaal niets. Zo jammer dat dit evenement zo slecht wordt gepresenteerd op de Nederlandse TV en overige media....
Maybe your highlights mean a lot to you since you already understood what happened at the start of this leg.
For me, unfortunately, nothing makes sense after watching it twice. I only saw beautiful images of boats with two reefs and a small headsail reaching from 2 knots of boat speed up to 28 knots in an unknown direction respect to the sail course.
One boat penalised for a unknown reason, and ...Two boats suspended racing for unknown reasons, while the other three are sailing towards Beasil?
Sorry, but I can't make up my mind using your information. I feel very stupid while I do know how to sail and how to race even if I'm not a wise sailor.
Could you tell the editors of the TV coverage to work out their images again, in order to explain in plain simple words what happened, please?

@@TheOceanRaceYep. I already saw the whole race report after watching your highlight. This cleared me what had happened. It was impressive seeing some boats getting 40 knot winds (gusts) while other boats had less than 4 knots of wind. Drama indeed!

Not a good sign breaking parts on new boats inshore before an immense leg. Will it alter the speed vs survival balance?

I was worried, thinking “If they’re having problems already, what’s going to happen when they’re in the middle of the Pacific?” but this is a more optimistic way to look at it.

I remember 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race leg start in Copenhagen and finish in The Hague/ Den Haag. So spectacular and impressive with ALL the spectators' boats, when the teams heading to sea and arriving at port (winner Dongfeng). Where are the spectators' boats in Cape Town?

This inshore short-buoy is a turning point. The race organisation should know that this was a disaster. We have predictable(!) strong winds in SA, with table mountain infamously throwing speeds all over. these boats that are optimized for long legs and big swells with speed. I heard a captain say they had 40 knots in one moment and literallly ZERO knots 3 minutes later. Now we have penalties on 2 boats and it instantly divides the fleet.
If you have a dedicated person on board and you are near the shore you can have a digital 1Gbps signal to land with a few dinghies that extend the signal while these imocas have atleast a few kilometers of run on each tack. Literally NO one on land was able to make sense of this by peaking through binocolars and the skippers were saving their dear vessels for what its worth just to hopefully not rip a sail in these shifty conditions.
Are the skippers and teams involved in regulation/stipulation? I don't want this sport PR-ruined by a board thats never sat on a sailboat because this looked exactly like that. You see rippy 30 knots (.5meter chop) and next moment they are dead in the water. COME ON
I think the course was placed here in the wind shadow so spectators at the waterfront could see it easily- regular racing is run further to the north west with no issues with this wind direction. Most of the regular Captonian sailors were returning from Langebaan after racing there this weekend
So how long has yachting wind speed been measured in kph 🙄🙄🙄. Give us knots - that’s what the errr. WHOLE WORLD uses 🤔
you are not the hole world. knots is OK but kph too. 1 knot = 1.852kph. if you not can calculate I will help you

The reports of the race are becoming less and less informative and looks like a mess of footage. I guess AI is not very good at making sensible sailing reports:)
Why were boats required to wait a “minimum of 2 hours” to do repairs after the start?

Lots of early challenges and lead changes. 2 boats poised for 2 hr delay restart. Varying gusts of winds, doldrums, reefs and smaller sails. Onwards to the southern ocean.

@@simonpickering2665 No, all but all terminology measurements should be in SLI units or at least accompanied by them.
SLI units have a vast advantage against any other system, especially in a world where system integration, cross-platform and international work is the norm. Having a basic system that can be converted and easily broken down is just better.
I am not saying to get rid of nautical terminology, just phase out the measurements to adhere to SLI standard over time.
Pity it was not possible to follow the start life.
Are these wing tips some type of special battens?
I don't know either. in fact I could not understand what happened, nor who was ahead or behind. Very poor coverage in my opinion!
Wing Tips are batten ends that allow you to adjust batten tension easily

@jose maria trueba could have been so much clearer if they'd said batten tensioners. I only knew it was something to do with the battens because their upper leech was flogging

We'll tell the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world in both directions - who is also a Vendée Globe finisher and 2-time participant in The Ocean Race - she needs to work on her terminology.

It is the correct terminology. That wind speed and the change of it is caused by pressure. The geography (im this case Tafelberg) or two or more weather cells can compress that pressure like in a funnel, causing (local) higher wind speeds.
It is weather 101 and you have to understand it is a 3D phenomenon. Not a 2D speed 😉

How can things brake in these small conditions. These boats are supposed to go into the southern ocean. In extreme winds and even worse sea state. Something is not right here. Something went wrong in the design fase.
Also a pity they left the open cockpit designs. No more crews battling the elements.
I get this in the single handed races. They need to sleep, eat, watch all at the same spot. But crewed it makes less sense. It has become more sterile, more like watching a video game...

Wingtips are the connections from Sail and battens to the mast.
This race is a disgrace. Only 5 boats, 2 of them broke within 20 minutes. A leg lasting at least 35 days. I hope they all withdraw before they reach the Horn.
Terrible coverage too, a lame tracker, almost no on board footage. What do these OBRs do there?
Hi Caskraker, damages to happen regardless of the type of boat in such unstable and difficult conditions such as these. 11th Hour Racing Team has already repaired and resumed racing and Biotherm will do so shortly.
As for the OBRs... Give them some time to work. If you've watched previous onboard videos from this edition you'll have seen the harsh living and working conditions on board.

Ugly boats ugly sailing, bring back the Volvo boats where close racing was minutes apart with beautiful boats
