Mirror in the Sun, Winds Against My Soul etc baked our English, manners and language to perfection. We remain the most respectful generation. These soaps gave us a sense of unity as the movies, set in Lagos or Ibadan, made triangular references to Port Harcourt, Enugu and Kano or Kaduna. They also bonded our families as every member of the family would rush home from their respective external endeavours to watch the day's episode as one large family, clustered around the b&w or coloured tv….

And these included the house helps too. There was no discrimination. House helps had nearly as much tv watching rights as we the kids back then. We played "I got the tv first", & we respected the rights of the child who turned on the tv first in every given day. It didn't matter whether the child is the first or the last, if he rushed to the tv first, then he had first rights to what program to watch for the entire day. It was our early lessons on respect for agreements…written or unwritten!

I remember many of those anguish. The worst was the pre-altimate edition of Winds Against My Soul, that fateful sunday night in 1983 or 84 - something we've been looking forward to the whole week, and bang! Nepa struck. It was unbelievable.

Victor Oluwaseyi I don't think they have archives of our old soaps.. most of it got thrown out or destroyed or recorded over.. over the years.

Who told you corruption didn't exist then? It was just not every where. The civil service have always bee corrupt. But it was not just widespread. That's the difference with today.

Our generation, "the Bridge Generation" of Nigeria (that generation just in between the good times & the bad times, the last generation of the good times & the first generation of the bad times), must count ourselves both lucky & unlucky. We saw how good Nigeria was, that is sheer luck. We now see how bad Nigeria has come to be, the unlucky part. But, in all of these, we must see ourselves as the hope of the future of Nigeria, the generation capable of bringing back Nigeria's good times again.
