  • Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan clashed with The Mail on Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens regarding the cause of the Ukraine-Russia war and how the conflict could end.
Mr Morgan questioned Mr Hitchens on how the war could end with both Russia and Ukraine refusing to give up territory.
“I would have thought the position the Ukrainians find themselves in now is very strong if they go through negotiations,” Mr Hitchens said.
“I don’t know what would take place in negotiations.”
The columnist complained to the Sky News Australia host that he was being interrupted as Mr Morgan told him to “stop whining and answer the question”.
“There has never been any suggestion from me … that Ukraine should give up territory,” Mr Hitchens said.

Piers Morgan is by no means alone in this tendency to talk over interviewees. Sadly, it is what modern-day journalism has become. Too many journalists today see themselves as the focus of an interview, forgetting that their primary role is to extract information, not impose their opinion. The inevitable result is tension between the two parties, the disintegration of the interview, and of course, no one learns anything.

he's been asked several times on what bases could peace talks start and never answered. It's a dialectical trick to convince people that ukrainians want war, when reality tells they lost 25% of their territory, hundreds of thousands people and Russia continues to say that it wont never give back what it has unlawfully taken. Just think what would you do if Germany started an attack on british land and conquered Wales. They also took a huge dump on every agreement of not joining NATO and bringing western military in the back yard of Russia. So, Ukraine gets what it deserves and then some. This bearded guy got owned. He can't even shave his mustache properly, let alone talk about geopolitics. You can't have peace now. Putin does not want peace.
It is true to the point, that EU should use diplomatic route and think about peace back in 2012, and 2013 and didn't. And back in 2020 and 2021, they had more oportunities to solve this diplomaticaly (altho it was arguably too late by then). But they refused. EU and Ukraine both chose war right then and there, and they should avoid it for the benefit of Ukraine. So yes. You could talk about peaceful solutions back then. But now it's way too late. Now, that everyone is in it deep, the best course of action is to try to support Ukraine so they can maybe possibly win or at least get better deal at peace negotiating table. Putin can not win the war. And he can't win precisely because whole world supports Ukraine! Maybe Ukraine can not "win". But as long as they get support, Putin can not win either. And in such scenarios, it is usualy attacker that must eventualy settle and stop the attack.
There is one thing that Putin still can hope for however. And it is for countries to stop supporting Ukraine. That's why he's angry every time new weapons are getting delivered. And that's exactley what the broken mustache guy is arguing for!

Two weeks later they were about to sign a peace deal with then Israeli prime Minister as a mediator. Why did Zelenskiy followed what Boris wanted - we can guess, but the fact said by the Israeli prime Minister that the peace deal was reached and needed a signatures only. You said Putin is that and that: mate look no further than Bush and Blair in Iraq. You have now all their lies published. They are maniacs, no doubt. Putin had talked about red lines from 2000 - for 22 years. You don't care- I know- so why did US wanted to blow whole world in 1962 - missiles in Cuba. If your "colonial walking stick" stops you - threy it please away - 21st century now. You said 2014 - no mate it is 2009 when Georgia and Ukraine were pushed by US against will of some of EU countries to become NATO candidates. Russia would be surrounded by NATO countries in Black sea as it surrounded by NATO countries in Baltic sea. You would say - so what? - and here the history of UK and US participating in military conflicts in 190-195 countries. Do your math mate. Thirdly a peace - Minsk agreement 2015 - was just a fake to get Ukraine military ready to attack Crimea as per then Germany chief Merkel. I'm beginning to really despise Piers Morgan. I have 100% respect for Peter Hitchens and always look forward to hearing his analysis of complex issues. Piers Morgan, on the other hand puts forward a question. Then, if the answer doesn't follow the popular media native then he decides to shut them down!!

    • @petercollingwood522

Why would you have such respect for Hitchins. He's bizzarrely schizophrenic on the question. He's not stupid. He knows damn well Putin has ZERO intention of giving up conquered territory and consequently there is no reason for Ukraine to enter into peace negotiations while they are the victims of his aggression. His sensless waffling about such negitations under these circumstances seems utterly naieve and Morgan is entirely correct to press him on the issue.

  • @shaunvduke

Peter Hitchens is right we need peace as soon as possible.
Unfortunately his wishy washy, they must negotiate stance won't work.
He is right this conflict has history which needs to be taken into account. Russia invaded in 2014 and took some of Ukraine, they negotiated and got a temporary peace with Russia keeping what they had stolen. Then Russia came back for the rest.
The Russians must be driven back to Russia then you can negotiate - there is no other way!

These days people seem to prefer having a vehement opinion rather than a conversation. That's how wars start: lots of shouting then some fighting. Morgan seems like the kind of person who eggs them on from the sidelines without putting himself at risk: an armchair general in a tv studio whipping everybody towards ever more conflict. I can see why people find him repulsive.

Usually I find myself at least partially agreeing with Hitchens. But not this time. His argument is that peace talks should happen. When asked how he thinks those talks would go, he replies “I don’t know”. He’s playing dumb, of course. Russia won’t give back their gains and Ukraine won’t give up on their land. There’s no premise on which peace talks could happen. What would need to happen first would be for the West to stop arming Ukraine, forcing it to the negotiating table with a weakened hand, and thereby, indirectly, giving Putin what he wants. Once you start thinking about the preconditions for those peace talks and how they might go, it becomes clear: Peter is effectively arguing for appeasement.
