I have a campaign arc idea. The basic ideas are tarraques are super weapons, people race to claim lost super weapons, and in the forgotten realms who would be the worst group to claim that weapon most likely not just use it but also mutate it in to new variants? Mind flayers. Story hook 1 a massive earth quake that will topple poorly made buildings and city walls. Which gives a few encounters such as a over all crises management, dealing with lost of home, food, and wounded, and a local threat of a local orc tribe. But, the earthquakes continue and there starts to be reports of a massive roars in some of the quakes. One day the party will be called to silvery moon where they will meet the leaders of silvery moon and leaders of the dark elf refugees. The refugee leader a relatively inexperienced young elf girl will tell of destruction of menzoberanzan of a white tarraques walking through a colapsing the city's caverns killing most of the dark elfs. Next they will speak about being hunted down by mind flayers wairring leather armor made from taraguas hide, and mutated small, quick taraguas. Long story short the mind flyers found a dormint tarraques and from that taraques they created three varieties of tarraques one giant one as a mount for the over mind, smaller ones that will fight in wolf packs, and one that is to be harvested for the leather. With this advantage they declare war on everyone in the under dark. And this war is the central peace of the campaign.
I loved your inclusion of water being associated with the passage to other worlds. Our ancestors most definitely thought this (globally strangely enough, even in isolated cultures). So it's the association of water being transitional with travel.
Off topic, but recently I had a party spend a while in a Dwarven Stronghold, and since I’m a sucker for background music, I spent some time looking up “Dwarven” music to play. I found a few good channels but this one named Clamavi De Profundis stood out. It’s mostly Tolkien music, but it’s essentially just the perfect songs for any DM who wants to set an incredible ambiance for a party upon their first visit to a Dwarven kingdom.
"The Dungeon Synth Archives" channel is also a great resource for music, they have more than just dungeon synth if you look in their playlists and uploads. (If I would be permitted, I would like to think three very different examples of some albums I like.)
I've pretty into homebrew, one part I really like is new elemental templates. I'd like to add an idea here, the blood weird and to a lesser extent blood elementals. Blood elementals: A somewhat new sub set of water elementals created from elemental experimentation in an attempt to understand the needlessly complicated biology of prime material creatures. Finding that the majority of these strange creatures are actually around 70% water the greater consciousness of the plain of water attempted to recreate this living water, this "blood." The recreation was difficult but successful, however it was a short lived and painful experience without a proper vessel to contain and maintain it. Luckily another party stepped in to aid in the experimentation, help from the somewhat more understandable and fare more experienced living dead. These "vampires" offered to take over the experiment, and came back with many fascinating results and interesting creations. Blood weird: A parasitic elemental, exact same stats as the water weird it's bound to a walking corpse instead of a pool of water and has extra necrotic damage it's constrict attack that ether heals itself and it's drained husk for half of the necrotic damage dealt or heals itself or the husk equal to the necrotic damage. These weird are very curios and prone to exploration thanks to it's corps host providing it a means to explore and interact with the world beyond a pool of water. I might do something similar with earth elementals and bones.
1.) Can there be other weirds, like fire wierds who jump out of braziers, earth ones out of a sand box. 2.) How dose it work if they are in a larger body of water, do they have free rein over the entire body rather than be trapped in one small pool, or is it for a specific part of the water? 3.) So elementals can form spontaneously, can grow from absorbing more elemental energy or eating lesser elementals, and, when slain, dissipate back into elemental energy? How dose that work with genies, besides needing a soul to begin with? Do genasi, dragonborn, and half-dragons (the latter two likely being more astral and less elemental than pure dragons) go on to the outer planes, become like genies when they die, or like dragons (be like an elemental with an individual sense of self for a while but eventually dissipates). Can a dragon who dies and goes to the elemental plane stabilizes itself and become sort of like a genie? 4.) Can you summon a water wierd via the same spell as summoning a normal elemental, just with a sufficient pool as an additional material component? 5.) Dose the pool evaporate on its own? 6.) Can they move the water from their puddle to a similar depression or container? 7.) Will they become orderly in a perfectly still pool and chaotic in chaotic water? 8.) Can an item imbued with enough elemental energy spontaneously generate a elemental trapped inside of it? 9.) What would an elemental node look like? Is it just a place where that element is strong (like a deep sea trench, volcano, or storm), some sort of lay line type thing, or a actual portal to the elemental plane? Dose being near this apply a regeneration effect for elementals? 10.) If there are multiple water wierds in the same place wouldn't they eventually eat each other and grow powerful enough to leave the puddle? Can they share the same water, or do you need twice as much water for two water wierds?

Yes, if the container is no more than ten feet from their original container, they can form a serpentine limb/body and just siphon the water into the new container. 7.) No, it is the content of the water that corrupts them, not the relative motion of it. 8.) Yes 9.) Yes (please see #3) 10.) They can share the same water pool and they don't need to eat each other, unless.. see #2

I will put 1 in a pool of heavily toxic water, and make all of its attacks poisonous. The pool will be a Troglodyte filled oasis in a cursed desert with a ghostly sandstorm.
If I remember, back in 2nd AD&D, they were capable of possessing and taking over standard Water Elementals. It's an interesting component. Might think of bringing it back.

so its possible for elementals (wierds) to spontaneously form if there is a strong source of non-natural energy? for example a place where a spell went wrong that burns for years, or maybe the some rock that has residual energy from being the bottom of an ancient floating Netherese city?
No, this is specifically energy and exotic matter from the inner planes. Strong sources of natural (prime material) energy can create rifts that form portals and nodes, drawing in elemental energy.

If so what about: A golem that is hooked up with all sorts of weirds, using elemental nodes for summoning weirds from its body and using the combined weirds and nodes of power along with it's own intellectual to have a natural affinity for, and channel, elemental spells and blasts? Make the nodes the weirds come from be made from elemental Crystal's and hearts of djani or something and have specific summoning circles that allow the weirds to have special properties into themselves such as: Being able to move outside the golem for a limited time. Being able to cast minor spells on their own, as well as be a catalyst for spells themselves. My drow OC had a clear slime that he generated from his body (which he was able to keep thinly on his skin as to look normal btw.) that was able to project the tattoos from his body onto the slime to cast spells, so maybe the same could be done with these weirds, summoning them and automatically applying them as they're summoned. I could even apply an elemental crystal divided into barely noticable amounts to the weirds to enhance them and to automatically reform upon destabilization (or death rather), causing to explode, reform into a crystal just enough to barely contain them and immediately teleport back to the golem so nothing is lost. Man, my drow is an evil genius!!
I am currently working on a Prince's of the Apocalypse adventure and I know how effective water weirds can be and I've even set up an area of hot springs protected by two couatls that followed the Prince's from the fire and water plains respectively and their influence on the area has several weirds acting as lifeguards in the springs. That ironically sounds like a good time. You know what, that's how I'm getting my next water weird. I'll just keep summoning them and, like a situation with those little dragon creatures that loves cuddle names, I'll keep summoning them until one will agree to do just that completely voluntarily if only to do it for an awesome party and be my DJ. I'll even put a spell on them that will double as a rad tattoo for them to summon themselves to and fro back to the tank anytime they please so its completely voluntary. The fish in there will be cool little automaton/jewels or whatever that will have various effects that will be handpicked by the water weird and play various instruments and songs. And possibly have a whole host of weirds depending on their abilities inside the golem, that way I can use the same tactic for the other weirds into the golem and be able to have the golem itself utilize elemental blasts and spells of various natures. I'm liking where this is going.

If we’re talking elementals, then I don’t see why there can’t be paraelemental versions of Weirds: Lightning/Storm Weirds, Blood Weirds, Plant Weirds, Shadow Weirds, Ooze Weirds....
We used to view them basically as totally invisable while in water ,magical life form versions of semi to highly intelligent( chance roll depending) siphonophore like creatures , that are giant chains of smaller organisms acting as one massive animal.
Question: Would an elemental weird mind being used to power a golem? Say if a fey celestial were looking over your shoulder with the whole: "i will avenge that which bindeth with chains, with a great and terrible violence." Could you get a gaint stoppy boi out of it? Or would you be praying to the heathen gods of the forrest to not let their divine servant drag you to the inferno from a' top a unicorn or some other mount. (i love scary angels & gods and generally go with the trope that celestial beings are always atleast somewhat worthy of being called monsters.) Maybe even give you a dragon age style golem treatment when your there & go back to serenely petting the elemental weird, as if nothing happened.
Aj Pickett Naratively, it would be even better if that same celestial rescued you from a life of horendous objective slavoury and punished your previous exploiters in exactly the way they deserved too(making some cosmical benefical use out of them in the process).

I am currently working on a Prince's of the Apocalypse adventure and I know how effective water weirds can be and I've even set up an area of hot springs protected by two couatls that followed the Prince's from the fire and water plains respectively and their influence on the area has several weirds acting as lifeguards in the springs. Also IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN. My god how long have you been doing the Monster Manual and how many videos have you left to go?

You know what, that's how I'm getting my next water weird.
I'll just keep summoning them and, like a situation with those little dragon creatures that loves cuddle names, I'll keep summoning them until one will agree to do just that completely voluntarily if only to do it for an awesome party and be my DJ.
I'll even put a spell on them that will double as a rad tattoo for them to summon themselves to and fro back to the tank anytime they please so its completely voluntary.
The fish in there will be cool little automaton/jewels or whatever that will have various effects that will be handpicked by the water weird and play various instruments and songs.
Because I want a water weird to be my bro, and I'll name him Kool-aid.
And hey, if wants to stay in the party he'll be the hype man...thing that can be our bard.
He can even keep the golem after we're done with the party or being a party.

EDIT EDIT: Ok so a water weird has no emotion necessarily so I'll have the golem have that emotion and know how and have the Weird react accordingly, and definitely have it be a bard class for my party.
I'll just instill the golem with natural water energy so the water can reform, remove the tattoo, and have the weird be able to reconstitute a water gem into tiny microscopic pieces to make good quick use of it.
And possibly have a whole host of weirds depending on their abilities inside the golem, that way I can use the same tactic for the other weirds into the golem and be able to have the golem itself utilize elemental blasts and spells of various natures.
I'm liking where this is going.

I would put a fair amount of butter on a cast iron skillet, fry four slices of sourdough, layer on some parmesan, gruyere, smoked cheddar, and Monterey Jack, make a small saucepan full of honey mustard, Sichuan pepper and cardamon spiced cheese sauce, slice the BBQ pork meat off the bone, layer on top of one fried cheese sandwich, drizzle some of the spiced cheese sauce over it and then press it down with the second fried cheese sandwich. Accompany with peach schnapps and apple cider on ice with a generous supply of napkins.

Question: Would an elemental weird mind being used to power a golem? Say if a fey celestial were looking over your shoulder with the whole: "i will avenge that which bindeth with chains, with a great and terrible violence." Could you get a gaint stoppy boi out of it? Or would you be praying to the heathen gods of the forrest to not let their divine servant drag you to the inferno from a' top a unicorn or some other mount. (i love scary angels & gods and generally go with the trope that celestial beings are always atleast somewhat worthy of being called monsters.) Maybe even give you a dragon age style golem treatment when your there & go back to serenely petting the elemental weird, as if nothing happened.
