As a college student, I have not been taught or heard of the Black Panthers once in my schooling until now, not even in class. Why aren’t we teaching this in schools today? Very sad but I’m glad I’m learning about it today and to start spreading this knowledge and learning more.

The FBI agent was in black panther territory so he most definitely had to pretend to be friendly at least lol, but he was playing a role to get inside information. So he probably pretended to be the most loyal person ever but everything that the Black Panther did the FBI agent knew about. That’s scary because how many targets and arrest and death scares were because of this body guard. Crazy thing is he got away with it.
Chicago Panther Fred Hampton got killed partially because one of his bodyguards worked for the FBI. As far as I’m aware they never suspected him to be a traitor. In the 80s or 90s that guy committed suicide, because he couldn’t cope with it.

In all honesty, it's probably because it's unfavorable to the USA. The US uses heavy political pressure to try and stop other nations from saying negative things about the US. Brent Adkins not really, the reason I said that was because when I was growing up, the school I went to never really touch on the black panthers. In high school all we learned about was ww1 + 2 and “American history” and in elementary school - middle school we learned about certain civil rights leaders or people who was against slavery. Not every school teaches the same material

Americans have a very blind-eye to what they believe to be "socialist" movements (even though a lot of their institutions such as public schools, social security, agriculture subsidies, etc are all socialist). Still by positioning himself as a moderate with Gandhian ideals, he was given more sympathetic exposure for the civil rights movement.

Stan lee wanted to change the name of his character when he found out about the party and the popularity they were gaining, but the public did not receive this well so he changed it back. He did not create Black Panther as a salute to those who sacrificed their lives for a cause.
Great experience for these kids. My dad was always quick to defend the Black Panther movement and the good they did for communities so I think it's awesome for these kids to learn about the real people behind the movement. There's still so much propaganda against them.

I have so many questions on that topic. Was the man still in contact with his body guard when he received that information? Are they still in touch today? Are they on good terms? Did the body guard ever reveal the FBI's motive for making him/her become the body guard to this man? How was this person hired as his body guard and by whom? Did the body guard actually protect this man against physical or verbal violence in person (since he/she obviously was not placed there by the FBI to be his protector behind closed doors)?

Also Reasearch the SLA (Sebanes Liberation Army) with Patti Hurst , they were a White Unit Affiliated with the Black Panthers ! They put in a Lot of Work !

@Geveor Gres if they killed it's especially important that they're situation is looked at from both sides. On one hand they helped the civil rights movement but on the other they also killed people. This is often the case in history. Not saying killing is fine, but if they killed the conflict should be remembered not only for their sake but for the sake of remembering the people who died in the conflict, on both sides.

I adore these videos, it's really wonderful go get to watch children having open and honest conversations and feeling free to ask questions without fear of judgement. Watching them learn more about the world around them is pretty amazing.

In the comments I often read that students never learned about the black panthers at school. I’m shocked. In Germany, this is part of 9th grade English classes. We learn about Dr. King, the civil rights movement, Rosa parks etc.
Really wierd to see people say they didn't get taught about black panthers. I'm from the UK and we learnt about MLK, Malcolm X and the black panthers all in the same term. In fairly sure we had to write an opinion piece about the methods of the different approaches to institutionalised racism and civil rights.
American here! This is really interesting to see the contrast of what and how we were taught. In pre-college school the only time I was taught about the BPP was in 11th grade, I think that's the equivalent to year 12 for y'all but I'm not sure. We didn't learn very much about it, I had absolutely no idea about any of the social work/reform that BPP did-- what I remember being taught was a few paragraphs of information about it. I was first taught about Dr. MLK I think in first grade (year 2 for y'all? idk) and he was mentioned and we learned about him multiple times throughout the years. Interestingly, we learned about him mainly in the context of the civil rights movement directly related to racial inequality -- the "I Have A Dream" speech, circumstances around that, "Letter From A Birmingham Jail" (which I highly recommend reading). I had no idea until recently that Dr. King was also involved in marching against poverty! It's only been recently that I've realized how little I know about Dr. King and the work he did, and the different facets of the Civil Rights Movement. I learned briefly about Malcom X in 11th grade, but due to the way the content was structured (not the teacher's fault) we couldn't spend very much time on him at all. I'm starting to educate myself, but honestly I think that the public school system (at least where I live, I think content and requirements can vary from state to state unless it's a AP/IB/Cambridge/etc class) needs to do a better job. Black history is history, and should be taught in schools, not as an afterthought or only in February, but as the important history it is.

The education system should broaden their horizons about black leaders other than MLK and X. There should especially be more conversation about the female race leaders. The Black Panther Party was monumental for black communities and it should also be noted that a lot of made the Party what is was and what we know of it today was because of the work of Panther women. BPP was generally not gender inclusive.

Yes, schools should teach it, still you have to have some interest as well and don’t just blame it on school education. That’s scary because how many targets and arrest and death scares were because of this body guard. Crazy thing is he got away with it.
Chicago Panther Fred Hampton got killed partially because one of his bodyguards worked for the FBI. As far as I’m aware they never suspected him to be a traitor. In the 80s or 90s that guy committed suicide, because he couldn’t cope with it.

In all honesty, it's probably because it's unfavorable to the USA. The US uses heavy political pressure to try and stop other nations from saying negative things about the US. We commit a lot of human rights abuses, but the rest of the world only gets the "safe" version that still makes America look like the hero.

In high school all we learned about was ww1 + 2 and “American history” and in elementary school - middle school we learned about certain civil rights leaders or people who was against slavery. Still by positioning himself as a moderate with Gandhian ideals, he was given more sympathetic exposure for the civil rights movement.

Black Panther (the comic character) is NOT related to the Black Panther Party. Stan lee wanted to change the name of his character when he found out about the party and the popularity they were gaining, but the public did not receive this well so he changed it back. He did not create Black Panther as a salute to those who sacrificed their lives for a cause.
They were both created around the same time so its common for people to confuse them.

Great experience for these kids. My dad was always quick to defend the Black Panther movement and the good they did for communities so I think it's awesome for these kids to learn about the real people behind the movement. There's still so much propaganda against them.

Did the body guard ever reveal the FBI's motive for making him/her become the body guard to this man? How was this person hired as his body guard and by whom? Did the body guard actually protect this man against physical or verbal violence in person (since he/she obviously was not placed there by the FBI to be his protector behind closed doors)?

I wasn't aware this happened, I'm Dutch so we were never taught this in our history class but Dutch stuff. It's good to see the modern American generation being taught this to keep this part of history remembered
@Geveor Gres if they killed it's especially important that they're situation is looked at from both sides. On one hand they helped the civil rights movement but on the other they also killed people. This is often the case in history. Not saying killing is fine, but if they killed the conflict should be remembered not only for their sake but for the sake of remembering the people who died in the conflict, on both sides.

In the comments I often read that students never learned about the black panthers at school. I’m shocked. In Germany, this is part of 9th grade English classes. We learn about Dr. King, the civil rights movement, Rosa parks etc.

American here! This is really interesting to see the contrast of what and how we were taught.
In pre-college school the only time I was taught about the BPP was in 11th grade, I think that's the equivalent to year 12 for y'all but I'm not sure. We didn't learn very much about it, I had absolutely no idea about any of the social work/reform that BPP did-- what I remember being taught was a few paragraphs of information about it.
I was first taught about Dr. MLK I think in first grade (year 2 for y'all? idk) and he was mentioned and we learned about him multiple times throughout the years. Interestingly, we learned about him mainly in the context of the civil rights movement directly related to racial inequality -- the "I Have A Dream" speech, circumstances around that, "Letter From A Birmingham Jail" (which I highly recommend reading). I had no idea until recently that Dr. King was also involved in marching against poverty! It's only been recently that I've realized how little I know about Dr. King and the work he did, and the different facets of the Civil Rights Movement.
I learned briefly about Malcom X in 11th grade, but due to the way the content was structured (not the teacher's fault) we couldn't spend very much time on him at all.
I'm starting to educate myself, but honestly I think that the public school system (at least where I live, I think content and requirements can vary from state to state unless it's a AP/IB/Cambridge/etc class) needs to do a better job. Black history is history, and should be taught in schools, not as an afterthought or only in February, but as the important history it is.

The education system should broaden their horizons about black leaders other than MLK and X. There should especially be more conversation about the female race leaders. The Black Panther Party was monumental for black communities and it should also be noted that a lot of made the Party what is was and what we know of it today was because of the work of Panther women. BPP was generally not gender inclusive.

Okay so some people say that they hadn’t known the Black Panthers before because it wasn’t talked about in school...but can’t you get informed about your history on your own? Yes, schools should teach it, still you have to have some interest as well and don’t just blame it on school education.

I barely knew who they were until my AP teacher buried us in black literature and It was great. Way better than normal schools give u.
Dude this is cool having kids litteraly talk to American History litteraly face to face. These kids are probably going to help turn the tide for the future. They're so empathetic and patient not to judge others.
