Fun cars to work on. Everything is mechanically traditional British engineering. If you've worked on old BMC cars or Jags or Rovers you'll love wrenching on a Rolls/Bentley. Very rewarding cars to fix.

One of the very few videos ive seen about older luxury car where someone actually says work on them youself. If you have a car like this and its a high days and holidays car why not do it yourself. Plenty of information in numerous forums to help you.
With most older cars..it is just one job after another .The expense after awhile starts to hurt ...and many owners finish up selling because it just wears them down.
Totally useable on a daily basis - I ran one for 3 years clocking up 35k - 40k miles / year. You need to keep them serviced by a specialist and watch out they do like to eat head gaskets around 70k miles (that's a £5k job). Also they must have a full suspension hydrolic service at 50K miles. I sold mine when it had 145k miles on it for a low mileage Continental R
I must say, driving 35-40K in a car this old is rather impressive and will undoubtedly have demanded a lot from the car. I'm considering to buy a young timer (15 years or older) as a daily driver because of favorable tax laws, but I am really worried if that's a smart idea considering I drive 20K miles a year.
@@stephans1990 why not try a 2007-10 jaguar x350. Will take the high milage no issues. I'm using a x308 21 years old & doing 10k/ year now I'm retired.
@@E7DMG It's one of the cars I have on my shortlist honestly. Together with a Mercedes S500 and a Bentley Continental GT. I have a few months before my corporate lease runs out, but I am currently leaning towards the Mercedes.
@@E7DMG I must admit the continental was the car that I considered at first and I have done my research. From what I can find the main issue is that the engine bay is so cramped that for the slightest repair they have to take out the entire W12 block which costs 20-30 man hours in labor from a Bentley specialist (at 100+ euro's per hour). But yeah, I did decide that I don't want to take that risk right now. Younger models of the continental already have many components placed in more easy to reach locations to take away the need to remove the entire engine, just to replace a faulty wire for example. Perhaps in the future I can consider this again.
As for the battery going flat, check that your boot or glove compartment light isn't staying on! Had both happening on mine, and that drains the battery in a day or two!
It’s all a bit familiar having lived with close relatives of this car for twenty five years . It should stand ten days without the battery going flat . I found that it was related to a faulty door actuator which wasn’t shutting down when I had this problem of flat battery after three days , so maybe your central locking issue is related to this . While I worked out what was going on I stopped the battery going flat by using the master switch in the boot to turn the power off when it was parked up . ( I got lucky and found a replacement for a missing cigar lighter on eBay for £4 if you feel it deserves the correct one ! )
Tyres are the only part of the car that make the steering and brakes behave the way they do, Tyres are everything when it comes to breaking steering and ride comfort.
And it just has to be Avon Turbospeeds on these. Anything else is just a massive false economy as the 4wd tyres like the Pirelli Scorpions she arrived on really aren't much cheaper and utterly destroy how the car drives. They're just not designed for this type of vehicle and absolutely will not work properly on one, and they may well prove dangerous if you get into a bad situation...
My Range Rover used to flatten it's battery if left for 3 days or more. I bought a dc clamp meter and managed to track the problem down to a faulty parking sensor module. It would have taken me forever to find the problem without the meter.
Interesting point regarding tyre choice transforming a car’s handling, ride etc, I changed from Pirelli run-flat to standard Landsail on my 2.0 BMW Z4. Ride comfort, road noise, wet weather handling and tram lining improved beyond belief, albeit at the risk of the inconvenience of a roadside puncture repair.
Is that more likely because the old tyres were low on tread? I’m not a tyre snob but I find it hard to believe some Chinese budget tyres would perform better than Pirelli tyres!
@@trainman665 Run-flat tyres are always heavier, as a result of their larger sidewall thickness. Another side-effect is less compliance, making grip worse and ride rougher. My first order of business is to fit some quality tyres to any new car. The Americans and Japanese seem to do it best, but by all means avoid anything from China.
With the leather, I had great success with my own Bentley front seat. However 2 rules: re colouring should only be used as a last resort, it's amazing what you can achieve with specialist cleaning products. Completely agree that cars like this need using regular, i have a jaguar x300 and since using it basically as a work van I've had nothing but driving pleasure, where as before when it was sat for anything from a week to a month before it was used there was always something going wrong
Whenever I see that old motor I think of the Bentley Mulsanne renovated by a fresh faced Edd China on Wheeler Dealers a good few years ago (clips available on TH-cam). Same glorious colour. Of course it is worth it!
I’m the same regarding tyres. I need a full set of Michelin Trx metric size 390mm for my BMW 635 csi. There is only Michelin that make them at around £375 a tyre.
Pause at 9:04 and you can clearly see that the upper aft corner of the grille has a much bigger radius than the corresponding radius on the hood. So, where the grille and hood meets they do not match. Of course the hood matches the Rolls Royce grille that has a smaller corner radius. But if feels lika really bad attention to detail, especially considering the price, that Rolls Royce/Bentley didn't make a special hood for Bentley that matches the Bentley grille.
