Meet London's Female Queens

  • Drag has been a gay man's art for decades, but women can be queens, too. While women have always existed in the drag scene as the subject of imitation, in London, female-identified performers are taking center stage and performing in exaggerated tropes of femininity to upend conventional notions of gender.
    Lady queens, however, are not yet fully accepted in the drag community; some gay men in the scene question whether those who are female-identified have the right to compete and perform next to their male counterparts. In "London’s Female Drag Queens" Broadly explores a day in the life of three women who are reclaiming drag for themselves, redefining its heritage, and proving that drag is a genderless art form.

    Even though I am a guy, I’d rather dress as a drag King, because I believe even though I am gay I should not be stereotyped as flamboyant. Being gay doesn’t mean you have to be overly feminine if you are a gay man or overly masculine if you are a gay woman.
    I don’t see any issues of women being drag queens and men being drag kings.

      Indeed . . . And i'd add that most labels and fashions IN EVERY SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT AND TO ANY KIND OF PERSONS imply a risk, which they EVER implied, even before the "modern" era: that in the end of the day, a person will become a X CHARACTER instead than expressing hers / his TRUE PERSONALITY. Be them drag queens/kings of any given gender/ orientation, be them trappers, punks, clubbers, metalheads, whatever. As long as the way you dress and look is a result of one's true personality that's ok, but if the personality becomes a result of the dresses and objects one chooses in order to look "cool", then it won't be a real personality but a mere role interpretation. And that contributes to create fake people and puppets.

      I'm a trans teen girl and what I like to do is change up my style very often. I guess you could call it drag, although I don't layer a pound of glue on my face lol. The way I do drag makeup is very different from the most well known style we're familiar with today. I usually do less heavy makeup and I also use old fashioned methods if I wanna look like I time travelled from the past. Although I do put a lot of bright colours and glue on little decorations sometimes. I've also been experimenting with different makeup items. Recently I just coated lashes in glitter and pearls. I'm also experimenting with outfits too! I used to just combine already made pieces but I've been trying to make my own. I'm making an alien-core inspired look soon. I'm gonna have a crop top which looks like giant pair of hands. So far it's going well, it just looks like plain hands. But I wanna add rhinestones, lace and fake nails to the giant hands crop top covered in a bunch of pretty things!

    I think this is a very logical thing for women to do. For me, personally, I never felt I fit into the female stereotype, This objective feminity is something that anyone should be able to explore, freely. I get that in drag, especially in the older times, there was this award for being able to 'pass' as a woman. In other words, if a man could look like a woman. However, I find it even more intriguing for a woman to be able to 'pass', which is to look like the stereotypical woman or even exaggerate it (I find it hard myself, even though I am born a woman). For some women, it is easy to embody that stereotype, and they do so naturally, but for women like me, it is very difficult to do. In other words, gender stereotypes and expectations are ridiculous, and anyone should be able to perform and exaggerate whatever gender they chose to do. It shouldn't belong to anyone.

  • @6June12
    @6June12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +77

    I think it’s interesting that they dare deny a woman and say that isn’t their space but expect us to accept them when they decide they are woman. You can’t be close minded and expect everyone else to be open minded.

    • @only2ndplace
      @only2ndplace 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I completely agree with you that the person who said that is incredibly close minded and gatekeeping for no reason. It always baffles me how some people in a minority (ie drag queens) will discriminate against even smaller parts of that minority.
      However, I want to point out that it seemed from what she said, that a gay man said this to her. Not a trans woman. At least I think it wouldn't make sense for a woman to say "I hate you because you're a woman" to someone else. But who knows, there are certainly bigoted trans people out there. In any case, whether the person was trans or not, I don't see how this should affect you respecting trans people in general? Like the overwhelming majority of them will not care about a drag queens gender and be supportive.
      On a side note, most people don't "decide" they are man/woman/enby. Like being gay or straight, you can only find out.

    • @tysonb3568
      @tysonb3568 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the issue is that some people feel like they are born women and they have an entire WORLD to explore that in. Why are they coming into a tiny space that people who weren't born women but identify as female have created for themselves.
      Valid enough point.
      But at the end of the day I think there is enough room and love for us all 🌈❤

    Mabey many drag queens are not comfortable because so , so many generations were persecuted,,,this art is kind of a quirky,funny ‘spit in your eye’ humour in a safe place where togetherness was and is a place where many people could pick their family and be helped by elders to learn to navigate ANS SURVIVE in society . I really think that it must take guts to this day (or night):) for a male drag queen to go out anywhere . I mean they have there own society where they make the rules and females entering just must make some drag queens uncomfortable,,,,,since Shakespeare’s day in Europe and before men played ALL the roles some dressed as a girl,,,,,a comfortable society inside a society,,,,,,mabey women should not crash the party but ask to be invited,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just sayin,,from an old drag hag

      I get what you mean like its natural in women, however I feel like there is a spectrum of percentages pertaining to amounts of masculinity and femininity within one person regardless of their sex. Like how people have different amounts of testosterone and estrogen, and also the naturally intersex people (born with both parts) what can they identify as?, their usually surgically not given the choice at birth to be natural. Its also common in multiple ancient cultures to recognize more than two genders, with their own nuanced descriptions. There are some people who can have their sex identified easily, but also NATURALLY sexually ambiguous people that you have no idea what they are, or you may read them wrong etc.... In a society where we have a strict rough standard for what a women and man looks like or act like , many of those who don't fit that standard have a hard time with their identity, and the list can go on when it comes to that topic. All this to say, doing "woman-like or feminine" things may not come naturally to some women, therefore it is performed, (their acting out of character). I think the popular things that women decorate their body with today (clothes style, etc.) is a result of marketing. There was a time where high heels were invented for men only, also a era where women mostly wore topless dresses. Hopefully you get what I mean.

    Hmmm I have mixed feelings, i personally believe if you’re a cis woman who’s part of the community u should be able to participate as u understand what drag is unlike if a str8 cis woman was to do it it would just be a joke to her, that’s my belief

      It's a joke for many men who dress in drag. Drag itself is rooted in comedy. Why is a woman not allowed to dress up as a stereotypical version of herself? Fuck, women aren't allowed to do fucking anything are they?

    • @GoJojo-lv6zi

      @@jazzfox5330 Exactly. A lot of assumptions are being made about bio women -- and most of it is giving misogyny. Like we can't think for ourselves or are completely ignorant about anything outside of what people (typically misogynists) expect us to understand.

      There absolutely nothing wrong about cis people wanting to embrace queer culture. It's a good thing that we have come so far as to be mainstream. That cis people want to emulate us shows how far we've come. It's regressive to want to segment ourselves into separate communities. We always wanted acceptance, so why can't you be accepting?

    • @writerchick94
      @writerchick94 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      it is gender empowerment when people like you exist in the world to tell women that only men are allowed to perform being a loud, proud, confident in your face women. gender is a construct, woman is a category from which certain characteristics are expected, and drag is an art that subverts that. men in drag are subverting ideas about masculinity but ALSO femininity. to be a woman in many cultures in the west means an expectation to be quiet and submissive and docile. to be a man in drag is to subvert the idea of what a man is, but it is also to subvert that conception of womanhood by going on stage while being loud, proud, and confident. a woman in drag is subverting that exact gendered ideal. and as long as men continue to tell women where they do and don't belong, women in drag will continue to be subversive and empowering.

      Most women doing drag are gay. Idk why every-time this is brought up it’s like no gay women exist. Not to mention women have always been and still are marginalized. Women are still abused, hated, killed for being women etc. The whole point of drag is to break away from that so why gatekeep and bring that same gross misogyny into a space that was created to break away from.
