Solo stoves are awesome! Jim brought one down for us to use at Cedar Mesa since they require a fire pan and for you to haul out all of your ashes. I was amazed that while the inside was a raging inferno, the outside of the solo stove was almost cold. I’m looking at getting one for the backyard and for car camping. I’d love to try it with that cook top. Great video! Love it man! 👍👍 CP
We never took a stove camping 🤯 We always built our fire pits. I get it for the RV campers, but backpackers don’t need anything but the fire starting accessories. Again, back yards I get it, but tent camping, I can’t wrap my mind around. But for those who want the added weight, thumbs up.
It's cool for sure but for camping not so much imo. I use a Bayou classic skottle with a propane burner, regulating the flame is much easier while cooking than an open flame.
The only problem is the way the support stand is designed, it prevents direct heating of the outside 2 inches of the griddle, making it hard to cook on unless directly in the center. The rough casting makes most things stick and is hard to use utensils on., so I took a flap disk to mine with an angle grinder, then used a couple sanding disks to leave the top perfectly flat and mirrored.
Awesome setup but yeah that would be very bulky. My family has been using that same Nemo tent for car camping the last year as well. Be awesome to see a refresh video on your families car camping setup someday.
@@BackcountryExposure I'm not sure if this is true or not but my mother used to tell me in her times people used to cook over wood on iron skillet or cook in a clay pot - and they had so many health benefits comparing to todays modern way of cooking is not healthy at all and it brings health problems. Not sure if that's true or not but that's what I heard and I did try couple of times a cooked meal which was over pure wood fire...and I did feel good
200$ accessory, no thanks.. Just go to a hardware store that sells round bbq grills for weber. Use it with a flat top lodge cast iron Found mine for 19.99
I was thinking the same thing. I already have some cast iron pans that would fit great on top. Sometimes people just want the name and don't care how ridiculous the price is. No offense to the maker of this video, I'm just trying to figure out why solo stove charges so much for their stuff and I have a ranger myself
Looks like a good stable cook top, we have been using a tri pod and chain. Would be great to find that cook platform you have. We use our solo stove ranger lots, year round. Has been an awesome piece of kit
Hey the 2.0 griddle looks like a great upgrade. How does it handle wood sold at campsites? Have you ever checked out the snowpeak takibi large firepit kit /floga for glamping?
The Ranger being a smaller pit is not quite tall enough for the length of what those typical bundles are cut at from a gas station or campsite. So I will typically have a saw and axe with me to break it down a bit to help it burn easier.
While a great idea, the main problem with this is that you have very little temperature control. It's either raging hot or not hot enough for long periods of time while cooking. A better idea would be to get the adjustable grate that will allow you to raise and lower a grill grate to adjust for the temp variation.
I haven't used the ranger, but I do have the campfire. Keeping the right temperature was difficult at first, but once you figure out what fuel works best and when is the best time to add that fuel. Soft woods burn really hot and burn out fast, on the flip side hard woods burn at a lower temperature but last longer. Charcoal is also a very viable option for maintaining consistent heat.
my ? is if u cant use water or clorox how would u clean up the cooking mess. really wana get cooking attatchment but not ruin it by not being able to clean it properly
Hate solo stoves. You can’t feel a damn thing from it unless you’re hovering over the thing. They’re nice for…ambiance, and I guess cooking. Looking forward to the upcoming Howl Campfire.
That’s actually one of the nice things about the ranger. It’s shorter and you don’t have to hover the same you kind of do with the bonfire. My parents have a bonfire and I’d agree with that.
Try adding pellets (cheap) with a ladle and use the new Heat deflector for those cooler evenings.

Does the heat deflect from this? Im thinking of getting this instead of a heat deflector. Looks like you can shoot 2 birds with 1 stone with this one
Could you use the cast iron cookware from the Bonfire on top of the Ranger? I want more cooking space but less wood to cart around!
I’d like to know too! I had the same idea
Plus it’s awesome it you pedesigned fire pit is in an inconvenient location
Does that also act as a heat dispenser?
Can charcoal be used for the heat base when cooking in the griddle?

And just like that, I’m really hungry!
Nice video!
I wish they had something in between the size of this and the mesa.
They have had that size from the very beginning lol. Look in their cooking section instead of their firepit section.

We've been loving the Aurora Highrise! I hope to get a refreshed video on our family set up at some point. Thanks!

Can Solo add the same fitting to the Mesa, for cooking as well?

All of it is from Solo Stove. It's a great system.
What’s the difference between the 2.0 and the regular one?

Chef Devon! Love the videos!
Thank you!
I bet a commercial carbon steel wok would be awesome on that
What about the bottom and the sidisof your pots? Black with soot?
I haven't used a pot over the fire directly with this. But would expect that to take place like you would with cooking over any open fire. :)
does it not drip inside

How’s the warmth in freezing temperatures?
It’s decent. I’d say that is where this pit lacks is a lot of the heat is straight out the top, since it’s double walled.
my ? is if u cant use water or clorox how would u clean up the cooking mess. really wana get cooking attatchment but not ruin it by not being able to clean it properly
It's cast iron, so you'll clean it just as you would any other cast iron cookware.
Looks kinda big to take hiking?
Apologies if I missed it in the but does the cast iron come with the additional stand? Or are they separate purchases?
They are sold separately cause there’s a couple different cast iron options like a wok, the griddle and I believe a grill
Does it put off much heat, though?
Yeah it does.
...cool video keep up the great content.. Thank you…
Sad you did not show the secondary burn :(
We just used rocks works fine
Nice! ha ha
it is smokless but also heatless. All the heat goes straight up but does not radiate out. It is a pretty garden feature but not great for camping

Not to mention they stole the idea from Bushbuddy years ago.
Top sirlion steak!!😂😂😂
You can also make a flame adjuster so you can simmer your stove. th-cam.com/video/_5vkKAnknZo/w-d-xo.html
It looks like it'd be fairly easy to knock over say by a kid or a dog.....
What a joke.. Promote a 150# pellet grill on your next car camping trip
🤔???
If you'd like taking a cord of wood with you those things are so efficient they go through a lot of Timber
