  • Congress is holding a hearing on the state of American education as former President Donald Trump pushes to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. The move could significantly impact school funding, particularly in low-income areas that rely on federal dollars for programs like Title I and special education. NYC Schools Chancellor Melissa Avilés-Ramos warns that New York City could lose $2 billion if the department is abolished, while educators across the country question how federal funds would be distributed. FOX 5’s Michelle Ross breaks down what’s at stake for students nationwide.

States send money to the US Dept. of Education that uses it to fund their Dept. and then sends the money back to the states, but also shares some funds from weathlier states with states that have less money, a sort of Robin Hood process, take from the rich and give to the poor...or at least that was the thought, but it's not the reality. The US Dept of Ed is duplicated in states with their own state Dept of Ed, so there is a redundancy. By closing down the US Dept. of Ed. it will save the taxpayers the cost of running that US dept. And states will be able to keep their own school funds to establish how to use them best in their states. IT's called 'States Rights'. In the US founding which continues today, different states were often formed with unique qualities, so if parents don't care for the way one state handles its business, laws, schools, they can consider moving to a state where it's handled more to their liking.

@@freespeechenjoyer The DOE has federal laws to protect students from the possible disadvantages they may face due to physical disability, special education, gender, race etc. They are the ones who enforce protections for students when students get assaulted, or are refused education due to SPED, or denied education due to barriers that may keep a student from attending a school. For example if a school doesn't have a wheelchair accessible restroom etc.

@freespeechenjoyer States comply with federal laws because there is a federal agency. If you want to make a federal complaint or claim it is not done through the state. States process STATE claims. When you get rid of the federal agency there is no federal accountability.

Doesn’t set curriculum, yet if you don’t cooperate with their suggested teachings and policies, they withhold funding. All aren’t there federal standardized tests that all kids have to take each semester and funding is allocated for higher test scores? That’s why they keep teaching to the test to ensure the kids score higher so they get more funds.

2 billion? Why does any major city need federal education money in the first place? Class is b.s. anyway. Just hire testing centers to run these kids thru standardized tests. That way the smart kids finish twelfth grade by age 13. School was torture for me. School caters to the dummies. Orientation? No thank you. Hw? No thank you. I already understand these ideas. Give me the test and f off!

Considering the amount of money funneled into the public education system, we should be graduating the cream of the crop.
But the quality of students that come out of the schools, is so poor, it's a horrible return on taxpayers investment.
If the department of education had been a money management firm, they would have been fired decades ago.
To go from the position of being a nation with enviable education, to one where students cannot read at grade level or do simple math is indefensible.

Good....where does all the money go? Not to our schools. The kids are graduating unable to read and write. I graduated in 1973 and most of our schools were great. We did not have billions of dollars but our teachers taught us fundamentals that dont need billions of dollars to teach. You need a good teacher, common sense, books and a chalkboard.
