Yup, before they debuted with MAMA, they released WHAT IS LOVE to showcase EXO VOCALS hence why the 4 original Main vocalists sang, BAEKHYUN and D. O for EXO-K version and CHEN and former member LUHAN for EXO-M version.
Then they released HISTORY to showcase Exo's DANCING and RAP SKILLS HENCE why we see alot of it here and in the EXO-M HISTORY version.

6 members each for Exo-K and Exo-M (2 korean and 4 Chinese). Since their target market for EXO is China/Asia the exo-m were promoting in China. Their albums were also in 2 versions, korean and Mandarin. But when the 3 Chinese members left, they were combined as whole, EXO, with 9 members. Even Obsession has a Chinese version too in the album. They were never promoted in western countries. Btw, they have Japanese album too.

Actually, they started with 12 members, they were in two groups EXO-K and EXO-M. After a year, they merged to as a 1 group like what you see in growl, with their 2nd album. The 3 chinese members left the group so they are currently 9 members, 3 still in military and Lay in china.
Oh, also, they were sub units EXO-k and EXO-M in their first album in 2012 when they debuted, but came as one group just EXO when they release growl and that was in 2013 and they were 12 altogether, but 2 chinese members left in 2014, and another in 2015 thats why call me baby video they were 10, and now officially 9 members and so 1 in China, so exo are seen 8 in some of their album. In obsession, they were 6 because 2 were serving in their mandatory military service. Now, the two are out and 3 currently in military with which their leader just finished his military service. But EXO is officially 9 members.

The K in EXO-K stands for Korean
The M in EXO-M stands for Mandarin.
When they had just debuted, each member had their counterpart in each sub-unit. If you remember MAMA MV and the story, it said the legends shall stand on the same ground but shall see differemt skies, it referred to the sub-units. EXO-M promoted in China in the beginning, hence 4 out of 6 members there were Chinese, with only Chen and Xiumin being Korean but with Chinese stage names. EXO-K were to sing in Korean and promote in Korean. But still as they were supposed to be one group, they would come together for a comeback such as Wolf/Growl, then Overdose.
Hence, the name of the fandom is EXO-L, L stands for Love, but it is also a letter between K and M, then you get EXO-K, EXO-L and EXO-M, with the fans being in the middle between the two.
Oh, and i'd say don't react to EXO-M MVs here on YT, it's better to do it on Patreon, because most of the reactors have EXO-M reactions blocked no matter how they try to avoid it. But i'd still recommend to check the Chinese versions, because you will get a different impression due to a different vocal line-up in those songs

Yes!! I want to see them live but the way the shows sell out so fast...I think it will never happen. So videos of live concerts are the closest thing I get to experiencing a live show. I have seen many bands live but nothing on the level of EXO's shows.

History was the first song I heard from EXO and I was sold. I love the sci-fi aspect of their videos and of course the vocals. Check out their MV Power when you get a chance. It's a ride.

When they debute, they used to be 12 members..so EXO consisted of 2 different parts.. EXO K and EXO M.. Which EXO K included 6 Korean members: Suho (leader & Vocalist), Baekhyun(main vocalist),Chanyeol(main rapper),D.O(main vocalist),Kai(main dancer),Sehun(main rapper and dancer).
And EXO M included 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members(Xiumin,Chen) because they needed to be two groups with 6 members. EXO M members were: Kris(leader of EXO M & main rapper),Xiumin( lead vocalist), Luhan(main vocalist),Lay(main dancer),Chen(main vocalist), Tao( main rapper).
They were in two different parts(K &M) but it doesn't mean that they weren't a group.
Kris and Luhan were the members of EXO M till 2014 and Tao was till 2015, they left the group because many problems that they had with company and some personal issues.
Lay has been the only Chinese member since 2015. He works in China due to the political problems of the two countries but they always show their support of each other in different situations, although they have to work in two different countries.
Anyways after those 3 members left, EXO members continued as a 9members group without being EXO K or M.

She is a legend in the Kpop industry, and has been slaying with every comeback despite having debuted almost 15 years ago! so diverse and each comeback of hers is a different genre, and she is so versatile and never have any bad songs. Such a vocal queen and recently made a comeback with her third solo full album called INVU which just dropped on valentines. i would recommend reacting to the song INVU by Taeyeon, it’s so crazy you guys will be amazed!!!

- EXO's original debut had 12 members.
- EXO is divided into 2 (EXO K and EXO M) where K with Korean lyrics and M with Chinese lyrics

- EXO M (Kris, Luhan, Tao, Chen, Xiumin, Lay)

Why does each of their comebacks have a different number of members? Because:
1. Lay is a Chinese member, and is currently doing solo activities in China. But the last comeback of EXO (Don't Fight The Feeling), Lay participated.
2. EXO members perform military service according to the rules of the South Korean government, must be conscripted before the age of 30 years.
3. Currently the members who have finished military service (D.O., Xiumin, Suho), who are currently serving in the military (Chen, Baekhyun, Chanyeol), and who have not been drafted (Kai and Sehun soon), while Lay is not a Chinese member.
That's why every EXO comeback is always different in the number of members.

Since you guys watched the EXO-K version so at the time this is half of EXO, we only see EXO-M members faces in a few seconds at the bridge of the song at 7:08 to 7:15, and when you watch EXO-M's version you will also see EXO-K members faces in a few shots as well.

When you watch Mama and the opening mentioned 12 forces dividing into 2. That is a reference to EXO M and EXO K. After 3 of the Chinese members left the group they were combined into one EXO with 9 members. Lay is the only Chinese member left and because of issues between South Korea and China he hasn't always been able to participate with the rest of EXO. He does a lot of solo work in China. You'll see different amounts of members in different MVs because of this and because of members doing mandatory military service.

at Exo beginings almost all Exo mvs were duplicated, you had Exo K (Korean), and Exo M(Mandarin). They looked just the same but one was in Korean and the other was in Mandarin (official Chineses). For example there is a song i super LOVE wich is called -WHAT IS LOVE- and i prefer the Chinese version, for me it sounds better in Mandarin, but you can always see both Exos in both MV, just that when it is Exo K, the members of that unit are singing and the same with Chinsese version.

EXO's "History" MV is supposed to be an introduction for EXO and it was meant to begin to establish their storyline and concept as a group.
So to understand their "History" MV, here is what you need to know: As aliens from Planet Exo, the members are about to be sent to Earth on a mission. "History" is thought to be about how EXO are still on Planet Exo and they are preparing to be sent to Earth. So that is why it has a very futuristic look and feel to it. There isn't a whole lot of story because it is a pre-debut MV so this was meant to just introduce the members and establish their concept.
"History" is EXO's second pre-debut track. It was released in 2012 -- about 2 months after their first pre-debut song and MV "What is Love," and about 2 months before "Mama," which is EXO's official debut -- so this is more than 9 years ago. "History" is the introduction of the storyline and it explains what led up to the events in "Mama."
In the EXO-K version of "History" you only saw the EXO-K (Korean) members -- Kai, D.O, Suho, Sehun, Baekhyun and Chanyeol -- singing, and in the middle of the song you see them flash to the EXO-M (Chinese) members -- Lay, Kris, Chen, Luhan, Xiumin and Tao -- however, if you watch the EXO-M version you will see that the EXO-M members are the main characters in the story and they only show the EXO-K members briefly. This establishes how the two groups are separate and yet still are all part of one group as EXO. Both versions of their MVs may look the same on the surface, but the story is slightly different because it is being told from a different angle or different perspective in each version.
Fun fact: if you compare the English translation of the Korean and Mandarin lyrics, you will see that the songs are slightly different. Because, as the intro to "Mama" points out, the two halves of EXO stand on the same ground and see different things and they stand on different grounds and see the same thing -- they are separate groups and yet they become one, etc. Hence, their songs and story are the same and yet different.
To understand the story in their "History" MV this is one time where it is helpful to look up the English translation of the lyrics. The song is called "History" and in the lyrics they talk about making history. It's about failing at something and trying again to make it right. So, the theory is that in this part of the story EXO made some sort of unknown "big mistake" on their planet, so they have been sent to Earth to try and right their wrongs by trying to prevent the Red Force from causing a "big mistake" or prevent humanity from allowing a "big mistake" to happen on Earth. They are trying to prevent "History" from repeating itself. And they want to make "History" here on Earth. It establishes the whole reason why EXO are fighting against the Red Force and why they need to find the Tree of Life and restore peace. They can't let whatever happened on their planet happen again on Earth, etc.
The part of the dance where they put their hands in their pockets and shake their pants, I interpret as the nervousness and uncertainty that they are feeling as they are about to embark on this new journey as they prepare to go to Earth and also as a representation of the nerves and excitement they are feeling as they are about to debut. As you can see, even the choreography is designed to tell the story.
However, just so you know, we didn't fully understand that was what the MV and song was trying to tell us, until several years later, after we had more context to go on after we had several other MV stories and more information. But that is why we say, if you want to try and follow EXO's story you have to pay attention to everything and you have to remember as much detail as you can about everything you have ever seen and heard from EXO. Because although you might think you understand one piece of EXO's story, with every new release from EXO, we get a little more information, and, sometimes it helps to confirm what we thought to be true and sometimes it turns the whole theory on its head and makes us realize what was happening wasn't what we thought after all.
What complicates this even more is the fact that almost nothing in their storyline is in chronological order, so we EXO-Ls (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of everything any of the members are involved in to try and piece it all together and figure out where each part fits within their larger storyline. And I literally mean everything, from their teaser videos, to their MVs, to their song lyrics and live performances, concert VCRs (videos played in between sets at their concerts) and even some of their choreography, as well as their sub-unit and solo work. Everything EXO does is connected.
And now that story has branched out even further to include all of SM Entertainment's groups and artists storylines. Everything that SM Entertainment produces is all part of one giant story, like a giant graphic novel or mystery movie series, and it's all connected to the SM universe storyline, that all started with EXO in 2012. Each new MV or project is another chapter in the story, and it's up to us fans to figure out where it all fits in the larger storyline.
To see their dancing better, if you haven't already, check out the dance practice for "History," the choreography is very unique. They have an EXO-K dance practice and an EXO-M dance practice. And it's one of their few choreographies where the two groups are not combined because they were completely separate groups in this MV.

For years EXO has officially been 9 members, so when we think of EXO, we think 9. Some songs have less members in them since other members are in the military. *But EXO will always be 9, regardless of who’s in the song (OT9)*
You guys need to react to a guide to EXO… there is so much you need to know and it will help tremendously!!! EXO was the very first to have a story line. You gotta know important information about the group to understand their music and everything. You will also get to know the boys personally. From 2012 to around 2014 EXO was splitted into 2 sub groups and each performs in different languages (Korean and mandarin) but of the same songs. 2014 to 2015 is when we will see all of EXO (overdose mv) singing together in both versions the KOREAN and mandarin. As the 3 Chinese members left in different eras they merge into EXO performing together since 2015 as 9 members but with 1 chinese member left they stopped doing Chinese bside tracks except for the title tracks they still do the Chinese versions like TEMPO. BUT since 2016 to 2017 Lay can't openly promote with EXO in South Korea due to various political reasons between SK and China EXO has been promoting their albums with 8 members but LAY IS STILL A PART OF EXO JUST BUSY IN CHINA. so that's why we see him in TEMPO back in 2018 and we had him CGI in the DONT FIGHT THE FEELING mv in 2020 😊 and when D. O enlisted in the military back in 2019 he flew to South Korea to send him off with the rest of the EXO Members so EXO IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE 9 ✨❤️

So yea ppl already said it in the other comments but there was 12 members total but the way they promoted (since sm wanted to make sure they catered to Chinese market) was split them into two and half perform/record the songs in Korean and half in mandarin (hence exo-m). They would mostly only be together for stage performances and music videos. It kinda fell thru when they had 3 of the exo-m members leave so they just put them all together which is how theyve been promoting ever since.
And Yea they were hella young when they debuted. Youngest members were about 18/19 and the oldest were around 21/22.
Okay storyline time, so at the beginning we see a crystal like spaceship flying in space and it's their spaceship (EXO-K) flying to Earth, and the mv is actually inside the spaceship hence the background.

But please don't get confused when you count them in obsession mv with 6 members again because it's not EXO-K unit, in 2019 during Obsession Era, 2 members XIUMIN and D. O enlisted first in the military and Lay was in China busy with his solo activities and projects. So that leaves only 6 members with Suho, baekhyun, chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun to promote their 2019 comeback album Obsession. Their 2020 comeback DONT FIGHT THE FEELING we only see 7 members because that's when Xiumin and D. O came back from the military and Suho and Chen left to serve in the military so we see Xiumin, D. O, baekhyun, Chanyeol, Kai, Sehun and Lay was CGI-ed in the mv from China.
And the leader SUHO just came back from the military a few days ago so we currently have 3 members in the military, the beagle line - baekhyun, chen, Chanyeol. But Kai and Sehun who are left are suppose to enlist by the end of this year no later.
To keep it simple there where 12 members 6 in EXO K (Korean) & 6 in EXO M (Mandarin) 3 members left. So now there are 9 members. But from 2017- 2018 there has been 8 members. (Lay- is still part of EXO but he promotes solo in china) from 2019 and on there has been 6 members in the MVs because the other members went to the military. Now EXO is 9 members.
EXO has one of the greatest vocals in all generations of kpop like group wise because all of them can sing SING. It's just one of their strengths as a group. They are literally a group of genius idols. They hold the title as the Nation's Pick up until now.
When this was released, Kai and Sehun were still in High School. Although both born only a few of months in the same year, they are a year apart in schooling so by the time they debuted, Kai had graduated but Sehun had a year to go. They both turned 18 in 2012, but all the debut work, in which Kai heavily featured, including History, was done when they were seventeen. They are the youngest two, the others were out of school. The next youngest, Tao, was an EXO-M member so is only seen briefly in this. The oldest, Xiumin (again, EXO-M) was twenty-one.
Actually I have never seen any Exo performance I just randomly came across this video waiting for a BTS reaction but Exo is also good all the groups are really talented as a music lover I appreciate all the groups other than BTS as well 😊☺️

EXO is a group with 8 korean & 4 chinese members. The members that does activities in korea are called EXO-K & and the members that does activities in china are called EXO-M(other times they do it as 12). But they stopped addressing themselves as EXO-M & EXO-K when 3 chinese members left the group. The only one chinese member thats in the group went back to china. And now he is the CEO of his own company but still is a part of exo(but because of his schedule he cant perform with exo at lots of time). It was this(overdose) era when the chinese members started leaving. We rarely see exo as complete 9.

Since 2012 until now, even with the emergence of new groups, none of them compete with EXO in Vocals, Hight Note, and Visuals. They are the only K-pop group that has all of these things! It is the truth that no one can deny

So EXO actually started as 12 members devided into 2 groups. EXO-K promoted in Korean and EXO-M promoted in Mandarin. They do however have MVs with all members (and 2 languages) like Overdose, Growl, Wolf. After 3 chinese members left, it became one group called EXO with 9 members. There are MVs with only 8 because the only chinese member left couldn't join because of some political issues between China & Korea. As for the MVs with 6 members, those are in the enlistement era so some members were doing their military duty.
So Nani Bros, since I've dived into Kpop way back in 2006 and never looked back, I feel I have witnessed all the glory that is Kpop from the days even when it wasn't a thing yet. But there were fantastic, established groups back then that got me hooked before Exo, Bts or Blackpink were even thought of yet.
As a born and bred American, I was underwhelmed by the Western music scene back then, with the exception of a few favorites that will never change.
I watched Kdramas on my Korean channel that was part of my cable line-up, and stumbled across this "Kpop" music during the channel's commercial breaks.
The music, dancing, and crazy outfits and sets were out of this world...I thought and laughed, "Wtf is up with these Koreans, that's not gonna fly, that's ridiculous!" (no disrespect intended)
But the vocals, dude, it caught me off guard..
And I found myself wanting to see more.
I could forgive the crazy costumes, if I could just hear that song again! That's when I discovered Kpop, and I've been intrigued and thoroughly entertained ever since. Nothing on this scale was being done in America, and I definitely felt it wouldn't be accepted in the Western scene. But on line, it seemed people around the world were trending their own discovery of Kpop, and I felt I was part of a bigger picture.
I've enjoyed everything I've seen ever since those days, not in love with everything, but the effort put into some mvs were mind boggling!
So listen up Nani Bros...I was there at the very beginning of Exo in 2011, and Bts in 2013.
SM Entertainment wanted to create something crazy, with a new boy group. They had the idea of creating a group that would thrill the Korean scene, and possibly corner the music market in China as well, as Chinese fans were showing great interest in the Kpop scene.
So they created Exo, with 6 Korean members called ExoK (who sang in Korean), and 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members called ExoM (who sang in Mandarin Chinese)
Both groups learned Chinese and Korean, and both groups did a version of all their title tracks in said language...that included mvs too.
But all 12 members appeared in every video. And all 12 members made their public appearances as "EXO", the group, as they traveled throughout Asia.
In 2014-2015, Exo were in such high demand around the world, they made countless appearances in many countries and toured the world, including the States.
They were working so hard, some to the point of injury, with little or no recovery time. That was what made 3 Chinese members leave the group and go back to China, which caused great controversy in the news as they fought in court to get out of their contracts.
So the 3 Chinese members, Kris, Luhan, and Tao, left the group, leaving Lay, one of Exo's main dancers, and they last Chinese member, as one of the original members today.
SM dropped the K and M, and with these remaining 9 members, just called them Exo, the group.
Of course, with members leaving, and the group being so new, of course haters were out there. The backlash from fans created uncertainty with the 9 members, they were devastated and didn't see any of this coming. Safe to say they went under alot of stress and depression because of it....making them wonder if their careers were over. They kept working hard to please fans. And thank God there were more fans around the world that loved Exo more than haters, and their popularity soared even higher. They created the song "Promise" as an apology to the fans, and to thank those who supported them through this crisis.
Now here is the crazy concept that Exo explained to the public :
Exo are aliens from another planet, their planet, Exoplanet. Each member has a superpower vital to the balance of the Universe.
They were the 12 forces that kept "The Tree of Life", alive on their planet, which was the tree that kept the Universe in balance.
The Red Force, or the evil forces of the Universe, wanted to covet these powers to use to destroy life, where as Exo uses their powers to preserve and protect life.
The Red Force found the tree, killed it, and exposed Exo within the tree. The 12 Exo forces had to flee from planet to planet, running from The Red Force.
All 12 forces finally reunite on this planet called Earth, as they saw The Red Force was creating turmoil and destruction on this planet, killing life everywhere.
They came to Earth and disguised themselves as humans...at the time they were very young so they went with teens at a high school...trying to hide their powers, but also trying to hide the fact that when they were angered, they had the power to turn into wolves, and run in packs at night under the cover of darkness.
The Red Force knows where they are, and cannot physically take the powers away from them, but can influence them towards the darker side of human traits, where temptations and bad thoughts can overpower them sometimes, like in "Obsession" mv, there is a good Exo and evil Exo, trying to make them want bad temptations.
The storyline is silently in the background of every mv they have made, and The Red Force can be seen at times, with the red light, trying to make Exo trip up some how and do bad things. The longer they are in human form, the more they become human, losing their true identity. But they never use their powers for evil.
Now as far fetched as this concept was, I thought, "uh-uh, that ain't gonna fly"....but damned if it didn't take off...WORLDWIDE..
it made them a hit, and when the "Growl" mv came out, where they are still kids at a high school, wearing various forms of the gray school uniforms....that song and mv went viral..
And Exo became superstars literally overnight...and a worldwide fandom was created...no one has ever created such a stir, regardless of crazy concept, as young as Exo was. Ever since then, they have become one of the most popular and beloved Kpop boy bands to date..
they are actually considered legends in Kpop...back then, if you didn't know Exo, you didn't know Kpop. And it's all due to the VOCALS...
They were all scouted in school, some as young as 6th-8th grade, secretly training at SM while still going to school. They had those vocals even in school days.
So today they are grown men, and have become icons in their own right. All other groups that are popular today, grew up watching Exo, and Exo is a household name now. I love them, their vocals are on another level.

I think their outfits are made like nylon & spandex-like (space suit materials) to fit their concept that they came from EXO Planet (space-like being idk) so I wouldn't even think it can be something you can wear during your highschool days either. 😁 But it did make an impression to me because I remember those outfits as their debut era which actually works for making an impression. SM (their agency) is known for introducing over the top concepts and strategy especially when they made EXO to be subdivided into EXO-K and EXO-M. The release albums in Korean and Chinese at the same time with this strategy. Remember how NCT's concept is kind of unique too. It's a never-ending group of members (currently 23 members) and releasing different songs in different sub-units but still part of the whole group. Now aespa with their avatar concept.
Even though EXO-M as a sub group didn't last, EXO IS STILL FAMOUS IN CHINA TO THIS DAY. cherries (Chinese exols) are the most strongest in our fandom.

A lot of them explained , let me add some ,Just because EXO's two sub unit used to sing in two languages doesn't mean they do it separately,Like EXO used to perform as a whole ,in the same song sometimes they sing in korean some times Chinese.also History and Mama is the song where all of them didn't sing , both versions they show a glimpse of all 12 members but later they changed the pattern for Tittle track , all members gonna sing and be in MV but For B-side , 6 (k)members used to sing in korean and 6(m) members sing in Chinese
Exo started with 12 members and was divided into 2 Teams Exo K(orean) and Exo M(andarin). When 3 of the Exo members left they dropped the K&M and just became Exo.
Most reactors only watch the Exo K videos. The Exo K videos do have the Exo M members in them but they Don't get a lot of screen time. So both versions should really be watched if you want to see and get to know all the members.
