Thanks for an honest real world review and demo on this antenna. I have a CB Boomerang I’m contemplating of putting up, but this Tram 1499 is catching my attention. I don’t live in a HOA, but I like to keep peace with the neighbors. I have a random wire antenna mounted on the inside railing of my deck for HF, which the neighbors can’t see. For VHF/UHF I have Comet dual band mobile antenna on a ground plane mount situated on a corner deck post. Anyone asks, I tell them it’s for receiving satellite weather images. Great antenna for ISS and Fm satellite contacts. The Tram 1499 just might fit my needs for something not too conspicuous. Thanks again, Walt.
I used to have the Sirio version of the Tram but in the end the plastic disintegrated due to sun/weather. I replaced it with the Sirio Boomerang which works much better as a 1/4 wave with counterpoise. Neither approach what a good full size 1/2 wave or 5/8th wave with groundplane would give however. I guess that height is still might but 73 and good luck - 10/11 is so open at the moment that anything should work okay .

Thanks, I've used one of these antenna's for years and worked 10 meters & CB around the world! If you have limited space and still want to get on the air, try one! I use 100 feet of RG-58 coax to get 1.9 SWR on 10 & 1.2 SWR on CB! I was surprised with this Antenna!
Hi Walt, been having a blast on 12 & 10 meters this past week with my AR-10 vertical. Easy European contacts, also south America! Bands are wide open! Have fun!
I grabbed a roll of poly rope for electric fences to play with. over 600ft of stainless wire to play with. First thing I did was throw up a 20m inverted V. After adjusting for the velocity factor for stainless steel wire, I got a 1.3 match in the middle of the band and 1.5 on the edges. Good enough for me. I used a bnc to multiway connectors for a no solder antenna. the legs were looped on the end and stuck on a fiberglass 4 ft post the apex was abt 16 ft up on 20ft telescopic fishing pole. And we were off on ft8 at 50 watts max. using 50ft of rg58. First contacts were France and Italy right off on the 1st CQ. 14.074 Mhz (not everyone knows) As I played around I put it on every band 20m to 6m and made DX contacts of course I had to use a tuner to hit the other bands. 6m was on the dead side, this was during the eclipse. All total maybe $10 of parts to make an antenna and a whole lot of fun, for a nerd. Could have just used a rope over a tree branch to get it up in the air.
Nice little antenna ; back then when I was a student, I put a mobile antenna (6 ft long, stainless steel whip with big coil) on the rail of my balcony. Had a 1/4 wave radial, was tuned. Worked the world on 25W (President Jackson CB radio, from France). If there IS propagation, any metal in the air will make it. If you can have it in the clear, it's even better.
Good demo! Yes, you can do a lot with almost nothing. A couple notes here. To put the size into perspective, roughly this is like having a 14 or 15 foot vertical on 40 meters. That’s larger than most, if not all 40 meter mobile antennas. Second, it radiates a signal. Just suppose the antenna has - 20 dBi gain (this one probably has more more). In that case having 1 watt to a good quarter wave vertical (0.0 dBi gain) would be like having 100 watts to an antenna with -20 dBi gain. We know plenty of DX has been worked on 10 meters with that combination. I suspect that antenna in better than -20dBi but I wanted to give a worst case example. I think I did my math right. The 1 meter long Tram antenna was originally made for the British market that required an antenna with 3 db of attenuation, to legally use 4 watt CB radios in the UK, though 2 watt CB radios could use full size base station antennas at that time. It is a handy size, but be aware it is designed to cut the effectiveness in half.

I live in an apartment, but my office window faces towards an open nature preserve, so not a ton of traffic. About 3 feet from my window, there is a corner where I can put an antenna up without disturbing anyone. I was thinking about something like a tall tripod with a mast. My question is about the coax. You mentioned having a long run. Would it work if that coax is unwrapped for 4 feet, then the other 46 feet is coiled? Thanks for the help!
I think you might have some difficulty with the coax coiled. That’s actually a way we choke RF energy by coiling the coax. What you’re describing is basically a 4 foot long piece being the counter and I’m afraid you would probably not be happy with the results.
I like to try different antennas as well and my experience with these antennas was not positive in any manner. I would classify these as basically junk. I'm curious your evidence that the coax is the counter poise? If so you should have a choke in there... no? Would the best evidence be by the SWR changing with different cable lengths?
There’s a choke on the coax at the radio, I show and discuss that at the 4:05 mark of the video. Yes you would definitely see different SWR at different coax lengths. I used 50 feet as Tram recommended in the antennas instructions that came with it.
No luck Swr 1.5 cb ch 1-40 but two freinds have it hi rf over ndighbors stuff . I will say it really has crazy recidve so tram recomends 50 ft or more coax . Close to your eadio ir put rf in your ssb kodulation with common mode filter inlind . Usd a choke too. Did not reresonate on 15 meters likd antrin would . This make a great cb antenna on camper to porrables at camp grounds am is uneffefted on it. $35 i paid i was bdtter off msiung a dipole wihh alumnim tubing I am thinking maiing a 220 antenna out it s casing with griundpland Have fun people .
Its never going to challenge a 6 element yagi and 1kw linear for dominance, but I know which setup I would rather travel with.......any antenna is better than no antenna at all.
I am using the Sirio GAINMASTER but i am thinking about to replace it with the President Himalaya fibre optic 1/2 wave antenna! I still don't know which antenna is better! The Sirio GAINMASTER or the PRESIDENT HIMALAYA WB! Suggestions are welcome!
Using a CB antenna without counterpoise? You just committed a ham radio crime hahaha Have you ever tried DX on 11 meters? It’s actually pretty fun. To confirm with qsl you have to actually exchange addresses and everything.. it’s a mess, tons of crapy radios… but it’s fun! I challenge you to get that 10/11 meters radio you have and do some DX on 11 using 2OGO/DX callsign 😂the ham police is going to be mad at you. 73!
They are using call signs assigned to them for the ten meter ham band not the same as CB. He was transmitting in the 28 megahertz band not the CB band that starts at 26.96500 megahertz through 27.40500 megahertz. There was a time when you had to use call signs on CB channels and not a handle or self-chosen number. I read some of your comments and either you are indeed confused or have a lack of intellect regarding what frequencies are used for different operators such as CB, Ham Commercial, GMRS and others. If you watched the video as you stated, then may I recommend reading skills or glasses so you can read the frequency the gent in the video was transmitting on.

Question: If the coax braid serves as the ground, does the mounting point make contact with the metal pole? Or is it insulated from the pole?
The PL-239 socket at the connection point for the coax is insulated from the pole so the coax braid has no coupling to the pole.

It looks like they are very much alike, I need to do some investigating on that one.
Wanna let me know what you think?
Use the DNR on that 891. It truly is fantastic.
will do, thanks for the tip!
Nice video.
Thank you!
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Yes I did miss that. Does the instructions recommend a length before the choke?
I’m using one for a base station antenna
No luck Swr 1.5 cb ch 1-40 but two freinds have it hi rf over ndighbors stuff . I will say it really has crazy recidve so tram recomends 50 ft or more coax . Close to your eadio ir put rf in your ssb kodulation with common mode filter inlind . Usd a choke too. Did not reresonate on 15 meters likd antrin would .
This make a great cb antenna on camper to porrables at camp grounds am is uneffefted on it.
$35 i paid i was bdtter off msiung a dipole wihh alumnim tubing
I am thinking maiing a 220 antenna out it s casing with griundpland
Have fun people .
Its never going to challenge a 6 element yagi and 1kw linear for dominance, but I know which setup I would rather travel with.......any antenna is better than no antenna at all.
Roger that! Thanks for watching and commenting
Every antenna is a comprised antenna. People just like to bitch. Let the them voice their opinions and have it bounce off you. Thanks Walt!
Absolutely my friend! Thank you!
Why don`t you just chat away normally? What`s all the code & b/s?
In a hoa have 108 inch whip in my attic b÷n thinking about it thanks ks4ww john
Thanks for watching John!
Using a CB antenna without counterpoise? You just committed a ham radio crime hahaha
Have you ever tried DX on 11 meters? It’s actually pretty fun. To confirm with qsl you have to actually exchange addresses and everything.. it’s a mess, tons of crapy radios… but it’s fun!
I challenge you to get that 10/11 meters radio you have and do some DX on 11 using 2OGO/DX callsign 😂the ham police is going to be mad at you.
73!
I cannot confirm or deny that the 11 meter option may have already happened 😂 73!
You mean qsk
Please elaborate, QSK for me is typically a CW “break in” Q Code. In what form are you talking about?
Why are people using Ham call signs when on a CB? Makes no sense.
They’re not. I think you’re confused
@ I’m not confused sounded like call signs to me.
@ the entire video was about using a CB antenna on the 10 meter ham band. I wasn’t on a CB.
@ no shit. I watched the whole thing!!
Why you yellin" lol
I have a hearing loss issue
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES my apologizes i know how that is, race cars and loud music has destroyed certain frequencies my
ear can detect. As for Kate, she can make her own skip lol I swear she is blessed
Forgot to mention John Mower Junkie is in South Carolina did it in his backyard not by the water or top of a mountain.
I actually enjoy his channel, I’ll have to go take a look at his video.
@COASTALWAVESWIRES Walt when you see it you are going to die laughing I wish all the negative people that don't believe in anything would watch it.
When you’ve got nothing else to work with…..why not! 73! K3DMM
Absolutely! Why not. 73! K4OGO
