Humpback Survives Killer Whale Attack in Bremer Canyon

- Humpback survives Killer Whale attack for the first time ever recorded in the Bremer Canyon. Arriving on scene we watched on as a commotion of white water erupted and we knew that the Orca had successfully surrounded what they had been targeting, but our hearts skipped a beat as we watched the unmistakable fluke of a Humpback Whale lift above the waters surface. The hunt was now unfolding in front of us as Queen (aka Split Tip) and Cookie’s family pods began to target the Humpback. Latching onto the dorsal fin, the movements of all the Orca were to try and roll him upside down to drown the Humpback as quickly as possible. A true fighter, the Humpback resiliently rolled back over and over again, thrashing with his fluke as he tried desperately to defend himself.
Stormy started to breach in excitement as further members of her family pod arrived and the breathing of the Humpback become more laboursome and increased. Desperately trying to evade the Orca we could see the young Humpback swimming directly towards us at speed as the Orca followed. We have observed mother Humpback Whales protecting their calves on previous tours by using our vessel, but never before being pursued by Orca as he sought the protection of our vessel. The Orca chased after him and we watched on in complete awe as they pushed to within five meters of our bow, the Humpback diving underneath us just as the Orca once again latched onto his dorsal fin. Circling the boat repeatedly, the Orca followed for a while as this strong Humpback began to get his breathing rate back to normal. Sharks began to circle around the boat 3-4 meters below the surface as the Orca moved out and to our amazement Pilot Whales surged into the area. Attracted by all the commotion, the Pilot Whales had arrived on scene and curiously moved past us only 50 meters away as the Humpback continued to circle our vessel.
Regaining his strength, we looked into the eye of this beautiful Humpback Whale and knew that he was a fighter but still had the fight of his life ahead of him yet. During this time the Orca had moved out a few hundred meters away and began to create a purse seine style net, surrounding the area so the escape path was limited. Seeming to create bigger circles and gain confidence again, the Humpback was now ready to move out of the area and quickly made a break for it on his own. The Orca were watching and waiting, stealthily on the periphery and stalking the movements as Cookie and her family now followed behind him. The second attack erupted and this time is was just Cookie and her pod which left them in a dangerous situation as the lack of other Orca pods meant the risk of injury from a powerful fluke or pectoral fin swipe was increased. The Humpback once again raced towards us but this time the protection of our vessel was limited as El Notcho and Spock followed him and came up from below. Moving out to our starboard side, we watched as El Notcho propelled himself with incredible speed towards the Humpback and rammed into his rostrum. The angle caused El Notcho to bounce off the Humpback who seemed relatively undeterred, immediately swiping his fluke aggressively.
It was after this body blow from EL Notcho that the family seemed to realise that there was not enough Orca family pods around to successfully complete the hunt of such a strong young male Humpback. Wise matriarch Cookie decided to let this Humpback go and conserve energy and the safety of her family pod and once regrouped they began to move back towards The Patch. The incredible resilience, intelligence and heart of this brave Humpback will linger with us always. He never gave up once and thanks to his strength and size he was able to hold his ground. The privilege of watching such a significant event unfold throughout today was an opportunity to learn a completely different side of the Bremer Bay Orca population. Feeding well over the last six weeks we know the Orca families are starting to gain strength in preparation for the long winter ahead of them when opportunities like today become more prevalent. Although earlier than usual it appears that the Orca are ready for the baleen whale migration ahead but were unprepared with fewer family pods in the area today to call upon for backup when targeting such powerful prey. It was with joy and relief to watch this brave Humpback swim away, with no signs of significant or life threatening injuries. The lessons he learnt from today will stay with him forever and we hope that he chooses a much safer path next time when migrating through this stretch of coastline. He did lose his dorsal fin today, but that will heal fine and the other wounds he sustained were relatively superficial. Maybe one day in future migrations we may cross paths with this special Humpback in better circumstances, we will never forget him and he will always remind us, “while I breathe, I hope”.
Absoluting stunning horrifying footage for our beloved humpbacks. What a smart humpback to use the boat for protection. Hope he is really ok.

This whale probably was weaned off recently, good thing it was big enough to survive a pod of orcas.
Even tho I knew the humpback survived my anxiety ran quite high watching this. I'm glad the whale made it. Incredible footage, especially filming underwater.
I really love humpback whale because they always save and help seals, calf and other species from being eaten by Killer Whales. I'm so happy that the humpback was able to escape from two orcas yet sad because he was injured. 😩 He really fought hard just to save himself, he's size almost equivalent of the other orca, he seems he's not yet in adult size. 😞
I’m so hurt, I’m literally crying! I love great whales 🐋 *SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!* Blue whales, humpbacks and right whales are my absolute fave! This is a young humpback. This is why it's a target for the killers. If it were an adult, they wouldn't risk being injured by the giant.

Humpback whales use their tails and fins as weapons and it’s no joke. Those whale probably didn’t wanna get hit anymore.
He fucked at least one of those guys up with his tail, the orca looked KO’d for a sec, and I think he did it twice. Orcas must’ve decided it was too dangerous to continue

Wow. Incredible footage. I find it difficult watching animal kingdom predation simply due to having a sensitive heart. But the Orca is my most favorite animal on earth and the only animal I can watch doing so. Simply out of pure respect and admiration of the intelligence, the culture and hunting precision these animals exhibit. Imagine seeing this up close on the boat, horrifyingly intriguing. I feel so sad for the humpback but in awe of the Orca.
First of all - AMAZING video quality. SO clear.
Secondly, didn't really show how the humpback got away? Did the two Orcas simply give up or what? I don't think the humpback outswam them or did he?
Thirdly... he does seem pretty injured... hope he can find other humpbacks to socialize with for protection going forward and his wounds can heal

Krásný podmořský svět. Videa jsou nádherná, uklidňující.
in other news, orcas are incredibly gorgeous
Pilot whales are known when have the numbers about twice more than the orcas to chase them away. 1-2 tons animals who have everything that the orcas had minus the bulk - super intelligent{largest neocortex known}. close family groups, cooperation, sonar, teeth. The big difference is that they dont hunt other mammals. Their appearance at the scene might have helped the humpback at some level though even not fully grown members of this species caught alone are very, very difficult to attack being so agile and powerful as this episode showed.
I just learned about pilot whales aggression towards orcas today. So cool
Can the humpback out swim them to the bottom of the ocean? And have a better chance to fight also.
Tough young fella, so glad the orca's let him go.
They did not let him go. They became convinced after 4+ hours (according to the article) they could not hurt him even with thei largest (El Notcho @ 19,000 lbs). Also, keep in mind that he is 2-3 year old-not fuill grown. Even he was able to fight through it. If you look at the Bremer Canyon orca attack videos, humbacks are the ONLY whales to survive orca attacks. They FIGH BACK unlike the Minke, beaked and vlue whales who only try to flee. HBs have dangerous poectoral fins and swipe thier tails to kill (unlike other whaes except the gray).
@@UseADamnCoasteryeah people underestimate how much of a fucking tank whales can be because they are portrayed as slow friendly beings but when shit hits the roof they know how to fight back. Its like a small pack of wolves vs a bull elk

Incredible story, and such a small humpback!
Could you please clarify the 3rd sentence in the 2nd paragraph? (For instance, what were mothers protecting their calves from with the vessel, if not from Orca?)
Does a missing dorsal fin affect the humpback whale? Does it make him weaker without one?
That humpy knows how to roll with the punches
wow such incredible footage. maybe it was practice on the orcas part
Orcas don’t succeed all their hunts. IIRC, mammal-eaters win about half the time.
They was really trying to eat it dummy
What song are they playing, sounds familiar.
Amazing story and footage of our incredible nature :)
Orcas are my favorite of the mammalian predators. I am in total awe of their intelligence, family bonds, communication skills, and culture. The way they strategize and execute their game plan is proof positive that they aren't mindless beasts. Orcas have drive, sheer will and they are relentless.
But for how much longer after being filmed.
This needs more views.
Salt water thankfully is a natural antiseptic. So hopefully the poor Humpback doesn't bleed out too much. My fear is even though it survived the Orca's that blood trail it's leaving will certainly attract sharks.
What sharks are hunting a 30 foot humpback lmao
These are ultimate predators
Humpbacks whales are amazing animals. The only known whales who fight back or chasing orcas.
Sperm whales fight back against them all the time. They’re the largest toothed cetaceans, much bigger than killer whales
Right whales and sperm whales are also known to fight back, very effectively at that
@@gothivore277 humpbacks are the most famous because they have been the most successful at meets!

Killer whale will never mess with Humpback whale if they are in pod
1:58 damn look at all the squid scars around his mouth! That humpback has experienced bites before, he's no stranger to a bit of pain!
Another reason I would not go on these tours. I know the Orcas must eat, but horrifying to watch. Am so pleased she survived, this time. Hope she is indeed okay, but I guess the Orcas will not give up their food source. Humpbacks & Orcas are enemies.. But, at least the Orcas eventually eat their prey rather than like Homo saps. Hearing her cries was heart-wrenching...another reason to stop Whale hunting.
Ça me brise le coeur de voir des orques tuer une baleine.😭
He is injured but at least he survived
Seems like in the end all they got was a tiny bit of his dorsal fine and a humpback doesn't really have much of a dorsal fin to grab.
The Humpback should have dived deep. 150-200metres. Orca wouldn't have been able to stay with it.
Glad it survived.
Humpback whale cannot survive that long either and at some point must breath for air where the Killer whale can just waited it out. With that the Killer whale has opportunity to kill because by the time it reaches the surface it is already weaken by less air.
@@samjibinjbinj9714 Humpback can hold breath 15+mins. Possibly moving along and away. Then up again and down. Best chance for survival. Orcas are much Smarter though.
It doesn't work like that. It seriously does not.
@Zangief The Red I do and have explained. These whales dive deeper and can hold breath for 200m for 15+ mins. Orca dive 100m for upto 15mins. Meaning whales best chance is to dive. Orca are only power because of numbers.
It usually happens in shallower waters
The humpback whale seems to be very young
Adult humpback whales can take care of few orcas at one time. They are massive and with their weights can easily kill an orcas. This humpback whale is not fully grown but getting into its manhood. Usually they are together, but somehow this one was all by himself. If his father was there the orcas would have been toast.
Sadly males dont travel with the groop
Toast? How? Do you know that Whales are on Orcas' menu and not the other way around right? You are funny.

I'm not keen on Orca's at all. They attack, harass, and bully other animals just for fun sometimes.
@@lauralishes1 That's not true. I agree they have a ugly way to take down preys, but its either that or the prey will hurt them back and escape. And this video is a perfect example of that. Usually they follow the whale until it's tired and drown it. The fact that they tried to kill it by biting is one of the reasons their hunt failed.
@@CANELA-cnm I was thinking that like maybe they were a young inexperienced pod, what you think?

Those long pectoral fins encrusted with barnacles act like brass knuckles. I don’t blame orcas for giving up this fight. Elongated pectoral fins enable humpbacks greater agility and efficiency.

Can't whales go deeper than orcas in order to survive?
All the whales need to take a breath every 5min so. If prey go inside deep orca has its food.

Your opinion of Dolphins saving sailors and possibly drowning people but no one told is just your personal opinion. Never understood why whales don't dive when being hunted.
They need to breathe for air some time. That's why orcas kill them by drowning
How? Breathing under normal condition is not the same when you are in stress. Plus, do you honestly think it is easy for the whales to outmaneuver a pod of orcas? In most encounters, whales are hunted by a pod, not a single individual orca which makes the situation much difficult for them to just simply dive. The orcas will push the whales back to surface by ramming them and when the whales are about to reach the surface, they will jump on their back to drown the whales. Please watch more videos of orcas' hunting whales to understand what I'm saying.
@Zangief The Red Except a whale can hold it's breath for over a hour, orcas can not. Orcas can only do 15 mins....so when You Tubers are so arrogant they think they can teach another You Tuber while producing no content. Also a whale can dive over 9,000ft...escaping....while an orca can not follow.

I hope i don't sound arrogant lol, and this is just my guess based on the info i get from the internet... i think the reason is because not all whales r deep divers? The whales that dive to 9000ft r sperm whales n cuviers beaked whales. The article u mentioned also only talks about beaked whale not all whales. Baleen whales like humpbacks, blue, etc are typically shallow divers n dont stay underwater for too long. Usually they dive to +/- 100m for 15 min on average, the deepest ever recorded is only around 400/600m (i forget the exact number lmao)... If they want to dive deep n stay longer underwater, they have to spend a lot of energy which i assume is pretty hard to do when u r being attacked XD
