  • Hi Know-It-Alls! International Mens day was on Thursday, which got me thinking about Dutch men and what I like about them. There are lots of things to like about Dutch guys, but there are 5 things I LOVE!!
    Some General Information:
    Welcome to my channel, “Knowing the Netherlands.” My name is Brinn, Thanks for coming by!
    I started this channel in order to help other newcomers to the Netherlands to avoid the mistakes I have made and to share my experiences as an expat living in the Netherlands so that people will have a chance to get to know more about the Netherlands. I am an American, and I have only lived in the Netherlands since March 1st, 2019, arriving here from Seoul, South Korea, so I am very new to the Netherlands. However, I have already learned a lot about the Netherlands although I know that I have only scratched the surface. I really hope sharing my journey about living in the Netherlands will help and entertain those near and far. I would love it if you joined me on this journey to getting to know the Netherlands. If you ever have any questions, please reach out to me through the TH-cam comments or on your favorite social media platforms. Below are my social media links and other TH-cam Channels:
    Facebook: / knowing-the-netherland... Instagram:@KnowingtheNL
    Twitter:@KnowingtheNL
    Other TH-cam Channels:
    Daily for a Year: / channel
    Brinn Binges and BodyBuilds: / channel
    Some additional Information about myself: As previously mentioned, I moved to the Netherlands from Seoul, South Korea, where I taught English for 3 years. So, this is not my first experience living abroad. While in Korea, I was constantly growing, learning, and adjusting to the Korean culture; I met my partner, Bret; and I had quite the experience when I was hit by a taxi while riding my bike, which led to leg surgery and a 6 week stay in the hospital. I actually moved to the Netherlands 2 weeks after I stopped using my crutches and still had trouble walking. The experiences I had in Korea and the hindsight I now have from them have really changed me as a person, and I am interested to see how the Netherlands will play a role in furthering my personal development, and I am excited to share it with y’all!

    Thanks for the shout out!
    About the humour thing. I guess that is what we share with the English and Flemish. We love to poke at eachother (and have yourself poked at) in a witty way. The longer you know someone, the ruder it can get. In German they have a nice proverb for that: "Wass sich liebt, das neckt sich". Freely translated, those who love eachother, tease eachother. The risk is off course getting the timing wrong or going over the edge of the appropriate. Maybe that is what happened with your coworker? Then remember the first part of the German proverb!
    And maybe because of that, we also don't have much of a macho culture. It is a bit frowned upon too take yourself too seriously. If you do something really well, be it in sports, business or whatever, you are supposed to stay "normal" and recieve applause with (faked?) modesty. You are certainly not supposed to beat yourself on the chest or, worse, flaunt your money around openly (which is even considered a bit vulgar). So succes has to be (or seem to be) "endured". We are a bit strange indeed, I realize as I type this down...
    Keep up the good work, you made me think about a few things again!

      I love that I can give ya a shout out! Thanks for being a know-it- all.
      That’s a great German saying! I think the Germans have such a way with words. Ich verstehe ein bisschen Deutsche.
      My coworker berates and demeans everyone. Rarely his nice side comes out, but when it does I can tell he has a great soul. Unfortunately, I think stress gets to him.
      I think it’s good flaunting is frowned upon, but people still find a way to let everyone know what’s going on.

    I looked up if I was wrong about what 'Knowitall' means, appears that I wasn't... quote from interwebs:" Definition of know-it-all
    : one who claims to know everything also : one who disdains advice."
    Maybe that comes across a bit condescending to your audience? 🤔

    • @knowingthenetherlands662
      @knowingthenetherlands662  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a playful name in this context. I am guessing most people get that because this is really the only time I’ve had someone think it’s condescending. I don’t know if you’ve watched many videos, but I’ve talked about the reason for the name.

At first I even thought you said 'noodles', but that is probably also because I was hungry LOL. Well whatever, just ignore me at will, but I could imagine I am not the only one thinking and perhaps just the only one saying it....

    Its simpel , if you start nice , you end nice . The dutch woman part is that the use to do there things by them selfs , and don’t ask for help at first ,. Most of them have a very independent attitude. Witch is normal to the north European woman.

    • @knowingthenetherlands662
      @knowingthenetherlands662  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think there are women everywhere that do things for themselves and men do things for themselves here too. Men are warmer people here than women. So I don’t think doing things for yourself is the cause.

    • @hanskonings248
      @hanskonings248 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@knowingthenetherlands662 its not the doing thing but the independent thing that make them more of there own , a part of that being “ warm “ is I think a opinion , and not a thing you can measure. And at last the relation / inter action between women and a women / men is also differently.
      Its nice to look at your channel , so keep up your work.
