In this video, see how the Baylor Bears football team defense, led by Dave Aranda and Ron Roberts, shut down Lincoln Riley's Oklahoma Sooners in 2021. See how Baylor built a run-game plan around spilling pulling blockers to the edge, where split-safety coverages allowed them to incorporate DB's as extra defenders against the run. We'll also look at how Baylor's CB coverage technique (MOD technique) helped them in both their downfield coverage and in the outside run game, before looking at how these split-safety coverages created some weaknesses in underneath coverage. Ultimately, though, Baylor generated enough pressure to keep Oklahoma from attacking their coverage weaknesses, buying enough time for their offense to pull away.

Roberts was already running this stuff at Southeastern? I haven't checked out any tape on those teams, but that'd probably mean that a lot of the Aranda's principles goes back to Delta State, which would be interesting. I haven't been able to get any Aranda film from before he was at Utah State.

Pretty sure TCU has been doing something like this for years. Where they're always in a 2 high look, spill the run to the outside, and have corners MOD with the safety robbing if there's no inside vertical threat. Good video breakdown.

100%. This off-season I want to do a look back at Gary Patterson and maybe the 2010 defense when he still had Dick Bumpas at DC, kind of as a way to honor their careers and influence. That's exactly the basic structure, though: Use a 6-man front to out-number the OL, then a 3-safety net to handle anything that can get outside them. Expand the Safeties vs. detached receivers, contract vs. blocking backs/TE's. This kind of thing stands out in comparison to other 4-2-5's and makes the influence easy to spot when it shows up somewhere like in this game.

Robert Anae's offense @ Virginia

How about Robert Anae's Virginia offense this season, low P5 program with 6-6 record due to defense, but finished #4 in SP+ offense. Very pass heavy, good QB with run ability, would like to have the thing explained to me as a fan of that team but relevant to the CFB landscape given the peculiarity.

The problem is that Riley would not turn Caleb Williams leave the pocket and run. The only reason that Oklahoma beat Texas was Williams had not been able to play so he played naturally. As the season went on, he stayed in the pocket and he could not find receivers in the pocket. This will be the case at USC this year as well. It was a great job by Aranda but Riley was his own worst enemy.

I think opposing DC's got film on CW. The more film, the more difficult it became for Riley and CW.

So what do you think Oklahoma needed to do differently to win this game?

Typically when a team goes with aggressive Quarters Safeties like this, you want to either go after them with playaction, or sucker the Safeties up and target the CB's 1-on-1 down the sidelines, so there's stuff you can do in the downfield passing game. UO took some shots down the sidelines that had a shot, but they weren't clicking and they didn't show a lot of options/ways to get guys open. This is also a place where a Leach Air Raid would get into the quick passing game, though that's harder with Oklahoma's emphasis on a blocking H-Back, which takes one of their quick game weapons out of the pattern. Basically, they had to throw themselves out of those aggressive Safety in order to open up their run game.
